52 is easily the best weekly comic I've ever read. Action, adventure, drama, what else could you ask for in a superhero comic? Plus, I love Johns, Morrison, Rucka, and Waid chose to focus on DC's lesser known characters. The best ones are easily both Renee Montoya and Black Adam.
@SnapperChannel3 жыл бұрын
Late to the party, but great video dude. 52 remains one of my favorite DC comics. It helped me get into characters I never really gave any thought about such as Steel, Renee Montoya/Question, Black Adam and Booster Gold. I wish DC would take more lessons from this story is showed you don’t need your flagship characters to tell a good story. After all, DC was all about legacy but the company would rather make 100 more Batman titles.
@ForEveryKindofGeek3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I totally agree with you, too. To me, comic books are at their most fun when they’re pushing what’s new and different. I don’t have a problem with more popular heroes like Batman, but when they start to monopolize the publisher’s output, the DC Universe starts to feel a lot smaller.

I have started 52 a few times. It gets a little hard to keep up with with so many plotlines but this video really got me to want to keep reading. Reminded me what excited me about DC in the first place. Also good job on mentioning the behind the scenes drama. It's so unfortunate but has to be mentioned.

Here's the thing that irks me about looking back on this otherwise great series: after 1886, the Big Three were NOT that important. WW was a "new hero" in the continuity, Batman was isolated in Gotham with his Pre-Crisis place in the superhero community just considered still canon but not really stated so, and Superman was rendered so generic by Byrne that he had no corner of the community for himself and no real influence on much judging how everyone else's history got hinted or told. Following IC, historical aspects were restored with Pre-Crisis elements, but those tales and anecdotes were published largely after this one. The series was great, but at the time of publication, it seemed as the Trinity was (in story wise) overstated. You never felt the vacancy these three heroes left because they were just another bunch of heroes after 86. We knew canon was altered, but did not know how far and with what specifically at the time. Hate to say, but Marvel did the absence of major heroes betters with its status quo prior to Heroes Return.

Ha! Doesn't surprise me DiDio despised the story. It was a story that had no real big editorial involvement and was largely off the backs of the writers. The man loves micro management and hates any story that embraces change or accepts legacy, the latter of which has become infamous with DiDio considering his hatred of the Titans, especially Dick Grayson. It's why the New 52 came to be as it erased legacy and makes the characters DiDio grew up younger.

I may have to pick this series up in trade. I have dropped current day DC and I’m going back to the 2000s books which I think was the golden age of DC. Finished identity crisis and infinite crisis so this is next.

I think prime earth is what DC uses for all of its current ongoing stories. 52 actually took place on something called "New Earth," but during Flashpoint that was rebooted into what became Prime Earth.
