I do a lot of kitbashing too: to me it's mainly to fight the new monopose trend GW seems to be pushing, or just to make some fun, unorthodox combinations of equipment and character (helps if your entire faction isn't the same species in lore). Some of the kitbashing I've done has been purely to avoid having literally 2-3 copies of the same model, assembled the same way, because monopose model kits are just that limiting. Having a 3D printer would probably really broaden my horizons there, but sadly 6 hour print runs are not a good fit for working from home in a tiny apartment.

I agree, having a 3d printer is not an easy choice for someone with a smaller apartment. I'm lucky to have a dedicated hobby space.

Hey Alex, I know I comment on a lot of your videos so I’ve definitely mentioned it before but once again just an incredible video. I actually just recently ran into a similar issue with some Frostgrave minis and this really helps a lot in figuring out kitbashing with a 3D printer on hand. I always loved a more low-fantasy, Grimdark style. I really want to get into AoS but the only appealing faction has been the City of Sigmar to me. I really do share the enthusiasm to change a kit :) On the topic of Backpacks, however: The reason why we do not commonly see Warbands and Units equipped with Backpacks would be simply that they leave their belongings in Camp before marching to the Frontlines. In Medieval war, you wouldn't just have some battle lines and such, you'd have a whole infrastructure of Camps, tents, and supply lines to make War happen. I think the only way I could imagine a Bedroll wearing Stormcast would be if they were a Wandering Warband, always on the battlefield, never settling for more than a Night. It can certainly tell a story but the more Roman approach had always been setting Camps, making strongholds, etc., and then going out to War with what you need.

3:35 Because, generally, fighting with your stuff on you is very difficult and tiring, this is why in medieval times armies had large caravans hauling their stuff, like big battlefield weapons, supplies, etc. And soldiers who carried their stuff left it in the camp. If your models have backpacks on it probably means your army is the type of warriors who do not stay in one place, and always keep on the move, which is fine. Yours truly, history buff.

Backpacks are generally not worn in combat in all periods. Generally each army would have a camp at their rear where excess gear was dropped before combat. If you had to flee you had to choose between going to get your stuff in the camp vs. doing without. That said, having backpacks is not uncommon in some periods because a lot of the art was of soldiers on the march. Napoleonic miniatures often have backpacks even if it's not technically realistic. This is definitely something that should be left to the preferences of the hobbyist. All things are, really.

On the question of why supply's are not sculpted on minis, its for the same reason you never see pictures (or paintings) of solders fighting with a full rucksacks. They are heavy and cumbersome to fight in and discarded at the first possible moment. Battles are also not random encounters and usually a force would have enough notice before a fight to set up at least a rudimentary staging area/camp. Leaving your freshly acquired crate of tomatoes on the front of your tank as you ride into battle is a sure fire way to get said tomatoes prematurely turned into sauce.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 2 жыл бұрын
But sauce is such a good thing that can accompany so many different type of meals :) I know what you mean JT, but I just like backpacks, and they are in a way less strange than holy handgranade wielding crossbows.

I love kiitbashing and your innovations are brilliant. But let's get down to brass tacks here.. tell me a bit more about that paint remover you used at the beginning of the show. Mark! It still gladens me to hear about your travels. You get to see a lot of things I bet. And thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. So. I'd heartily recommend the "Biostrip", it works very well. I do believe though, that it is not kind on finecast resin. I'm not sure, but this is what I've heard. And I believe a lot of your miniatures are resin miniatures right?
@markfrommontana
@markfrommontana 2 жыл бұрын
@@52Miniatures Ah yes Alex, thanks for the reply..the majority of my miniatures are resin--(I don't buy plastic stuff from GW--am I allowed to write that here? Of course I'm amenable to buying Games Workshop plastic if the company starts selling miniatures of WWI aviators or 20th century Grand Prix drivers) Most of the time I use dish soap, warm water and an old soft bristle tooth brush to clean off paint. Given my aversion to chemistry-- I hated my high school Chemistry course which was the last time I studied anything to do with periodic charts and molecules, I'm quite ignorant about reactions and properties of liquids and solids or gasses for that matter ..but now that you mention it I suppose a lot of stripping fluids and solvents would be too strong for fine cast resin. :( PS: I'll send you a link to some MT-ID-WY-OR et all scenery pictures in a DM on Patreon next week after I complete this 2,100 mile (3,500 km) road trip.

Now those are the coolest stormcast bowmen I've seen bar none. The original models take stormcast to it's fat and boring furthest conclusion, if there are worse sculpts then I don't want reminding. Many have settled for just gluing the bows back on straight and shrugged. These though suit the reproportioned troops and take them two stages on. Owlcast auxilia troops is the look I get, splinted limb armour and helmets off to aim, they really are trying to hit what they're aiming at Really cool, really well imagined, really well executed. Part of the reason the mold loses detail on multiple casts is the UV Resin heats up when it cures. If you leave the mold for a while after to let it cool back down before you removed the piece the blue stuff will cool back off and you'll have a better chance of making multiple copies from the same mold.

@@52Miniatures Sure thing. Technically 2 part epoxies are also exothermic, but they take hours to cure so are much less likely to damage the mold, but they're a lot stiffer so it's harder to get all the details (at least with blue stuff)

Love the minis, they look awesome, the only thing that really really bothers me is that the shields doesn't have the hold thingy, some leather straps ( I think is the correct word, English is not even my second language so..) and a metal bar to hold the shield with your hand. The rest, awesome.
@52Miniatures
@52Miniatures 2 жыл бұрын
Almost all Stormcast miniatures designed to hold a shield have the "shield holding bit" on the arm and not the sheild. So that one can angle the shield in different ways. And so we designed the shield in the same manner.

Wait a second. You're from Sweden, right? I was so confused to see polish product I didn't even know. I'm using Cleanlux for paint stripping (it's another polish product, at least I think so, it's used to clean floor clearing chemicals) that dosen't melt the minis and dosen't need much time to work, but obviously can leave some paint in recesses. Does this biostrip work on that? It has some interesting goopy consistency that paint might... I guess adhere to.

@@52Miniatures Thank you, much appreciated. I need to try that. I saw british flag, it's just that text on the tub was in polish. It was confusing to see product for very speciffic market used somewhere else and I could only find one company in Kraków selling it, probably because of my location (yes, I know, peculiar interest specifically to check for origin of displaced products with unexpected language :D). I had to dig much deeper just for fact checking and only through Amazon offer found mother company in England.
