Try painting with a small foam or short pile roller, gives a good finish

Thanks for the advice Andrew. We have plenty of more painting to do and this type of paint is horrible to work with so we can for sure do with a new solution/technique.

It’s called smalto. It’s what they use in Italy for all wood, iron etc. It’s incredibly hard to work with 🙄 leaves stroke marks and drips if you’re not super careful.

@@OurItalianDreamHouseyou don’t say if it’s water based or oil/ solvent based. You’ll have better control with water based modern acrylic paint - we get our colours mixed in Bauhaus Germany. What you describe sounds like too much paint in a single coat. For a decent paint structure aim for primer + 2 or 3 coats. All doors and windows in old Italian houses simply lift off the hinges, so remove and lay flat on trestles for painting. That solves all problems of “runs” and “sags” You can “flip” as soon as one side is dry, that’s a bit more than the 1-2 hours needed for “touch dry” - but with a bit of good timing you can do one coat on each side in a day. Temperature now is good for painting, water based paint doesn’t dry too quickly when roller applied (it’s not the case in Piemonte summer) Good luck,
