530hp Porsche 993 Bi-Turbo powered Volkswagen T1 "Race-Taxi" in Action!!

I don't know why but I'm ust in love with the crazy and epic builds ike the one you saw in this video: a Volkswagen T1 bus powered by a Porsche 993 Turbo engine.
I saw this car during a charity event for disabled people, called 6 Ruote di Speranza, where they have the chance to get on board on various cars and supercars and do some laps as passegers around Monza Circuit. This T1 was really perfect for the event because it shares 3 other seats for passengers in addition to the driver's one.
The creator of this car is the Swiss Fred Bernhard and he needed around 5 years to complete the project starting from a T3 van. He firstly decided to change the T3 body with the one of a T1 split-screen widened 21cm. Than the engine: he took the 3.6-litre twin turbo engine of a Porsche 993 Turbo tuned up to produce around 530 hp and 757 Nm of torque. Everything else, from the chassis to the setup, has been made and modified to create a perfect track monster van.
Quite a shame I saw it during this event since among traffic on track and of course passengers I couldn't appreciate the potential of this vehicle. Hope to see it again in the future!

A guy I went to High School with had a VW Camper Van with a Porsche 911 engine in it. His dad had dropped it in the van to give it more power heading up into the Mountains in Colorado where we grew up. He could smoke the back wheels on that thing. It was insane watching other cars getting passed by that van, the other drivers would always do double takes. This was back in 1980/81.

Dude, it was foggy that day. And almost everyone had their lights on. Even the VW bus had its lights on. And that is a straight section. No one brakes on a straight. Plus you can see another yellow car back plus few more cars on the paddock with lights on. I guess you should REWATCH the whole video properly when commenting ya? That Ferrari 355 was pawned by the bus on a straight. Just accept that.

This is cool. Ok so how would this engine do against another van the exact same size, year, but say the other one had a 350 Chevy, 428, or Dodge Hemi, in drag racing? Wonder how the big engines would do in this type of track racing like in this video? Can you make some videos like that and post it up? That would be so cool to see this one do some drag racing with this same engine. Is there any videos of that?

@@bedeckt true...for a stock 1600 DP, the type one engine that these folks are running is a custom build from a VW hot-rod shop in Arizona USA...Cost about $10,000 or about 8000€. And the 993 engine in this Transporter is anything but stock!

Many years ago, back in the 70's, I was cruising down the Interstate some place out west, Utah, I think it was, going about 95, and a VW bus passed me like I was standing still! All I saw was the big emblem in my rear view mirror, then he zoomed past and was gone! I would have like to have known what he had under the hood. Loved this video, thanks for posting!

We have curbside doors on the 53 foot trailers that can be used access wider vehicles such as this van. If it were a mini cooper, there'd be ample space to open the door and walk beside the vehicle.

The VW bus had two problems. They were too slow to get out of their own way, and once you started moving, the brakes were crap and you couldn't stop. You solved the first problem, I hope you solved the second

One day circa 1988 I was trucking on I-15 NB across Utah and I barely passed one of these that looked like it was overloaded on a flat stretch at 80+mph!!! The first hill I came to where my truck slowed a bit, it buzzed right by. This happened a few times as we made our way up I-15 towards SLC. No way a stock VW bus can do that! Especially in 90+ heat over a distance of more than 100 miles. Did some research and YEA! A certain Porsche engine or two will bolt right in!!!

Not a Type 1...... In the early VW's up to about 1979, a Type 1 was a Bug, a Type 2 was a Bus...the early Bus's up until 1972 did use a Type 1 Bug engine.....and then after that they used the larger Type 4 engine. After 1979 there were many other variation engines, one being a basic Type 4 engine but it had water cooled heads on it. Also VW had stopped making the VW Bug at that point too, so VW stopped using the Type 1,2,3 and 4 designations for their vehicles.
