I remember in Elementary School not only realizing it was brail because it looked like the dots on our classroom / bathroom signs, but then having to bike all the way down to the local library so I could find a book on brail. Felt like such an achievement being the first kid in my grade to figure it out, so it's a bit of shame that now in the age of the internet kids can't really experience that same sense of cracking secrets in videogames.

I will never forget my experience with Ruby and the Regi’s. I was around the same age as you, I found the sealed chamber by accident. Months passed and I assumed just like you it was just a cave. I mentioned this to two older kids in passing and they wanted to check it out. One of them kept their manual so he recognised the brail. Every day at school that kid translated everything for me and the other kid until we hit a road block with Relicanth the other two had no idea what it meant but I knew I had seen one in passing. The kid with the manual gave each of us his own handmade brail alphabet and that day I went full detective mode. The moment that screen shook was so exciting, I was full of Adrenalin. I wish new games were just like this, I honestly feel so sorry for children that won’t ever experience anything like that.

games still do this. it's just that youtube and online guides in general are so prevalent that no one really has the patience to figure it out by themselves. even if you searched for collaborative efforts like you did in your anecdote about going to school each day with new information, the other kids would just tell you to look it up...

I remember playing Sapphire in a pizza joint with my grandpa and he looked at the screen and recognized braille. Eventually I asked a cousin if he knew what braille was and we ended up translating the whole puzzle. It was a cross generational encounter in real life too :]

And the way they handle mythicals too... I mean it’s not just the internet. Shiny locking legendaries in gen 6+, shiny locking starters in gen 8, just handing out the mythicals instead of giving you an item to find them, making the games so handhold-y... I honestly wish that they would make the games more difficult, or at least have a difficulty setting. Unfortunately, with data mining, and Internet forums, I don’t think there’s much that they can do about people learning so much about the games so soon, but I would love to see games more like gen 3

It's so difficult to keep secrets in the digital age, it makes me kind of sad. I'll never forget the feeling of wandering into the grass in Johto and encountering a Stantler for the first time and just being BLOWN AWAY because I had no idea what I was looking at. I really hope Game Freak comes back around to the idea of quirky mystery Pokemon again. They've kind of got it going on in Gen 8 with how weird some of the evolution methods are, so I'm hopeful it's a growing trend!

I dont really like the regis but I loved the hunt for them. Having to decode the brail and search all around for the caves was a big achievement and something I feel is missing from new games. You were truly rewarded for your curiosity and exploration in these older games. I miss that alot. Hidden paths, caves, boulder puzzles, sevi islands, etc. Even running into roamers for the first time was a unique experience that would reignite my will to play when I was young. Maybe it's part nostalgia but anything past gen 5 has not interested me in nearly the same way. Emerald is all time.

I grew up on 4th gen, our ‘regi trio’ was the Darkrai/Cresselia event, with honorable mentions being the old chateau and Arceus at the top of Mt. Coronet. The mystery and hype only grew stronger in Black2/White2 with the inclusion of the haunted house in that desert area, and the seemingly useless underwater ruins. Man, I miss those days.

In middle school, before my family got the Internet, I translated the braille and caught the Regis. I told my friend about it and gave him the translation before our first period class. So class goes on as normal and we change rooms for second period. Out of nowhere, the room we had first period in erupted in laughter which is weird because that teacher couldn't tell a joke to save her life. It turns out my buddy accidentally left the translations in the room and that teacher read it out loud thinking someone was passing notes in class. So when she said "we feared the Pokemon" everyone realized that note was from me

This was how I felt playing through my copy of Diamond when I was 7 or 8. I remember being completely floored by all the secret events and legendaries available in the game. One of my best memories playing Pokemon was after I had beaten the elite four in diamond, and just happened to be running down route 214. I saw a completely new path towards the eastern side of the route that I had never noticed before. Following it, I got to sendoff spring and eventually turnback cave. Running aimlessly through those cryptic rooms and eventually stumbling upon Giratina sitting there motionless, calmly observing you as if it was expecting you to come still gives me chills. I love how nobody in the region mentioned it; there was no "hey you should go check out route 214" dialogue as far as I can remember. It was just this new thing that suddenly opened up to you, and they left it completely up to you to find. THAT is what newer games are missing. In order to get that feeling once again, they will have to hide their secrets MUCH better. Make them more obscure, harder to find, more intricate and more difficult to accomplish. Don't include any NPC's pushing you in the right direction. Let it be something that someone stumbles upon totally by chance. That's the type of thing that makes your world feel so much more vibrant and detailed.
@anthares96
@anthares96 4 жыл бұрын
same, that and the regi puzzle are two of the best legendary encounters purely because it feels so satisfying to explore the world and uncover awesome secrets by that, or even stumble into them by accident :,) i had a similar experience to you when it comes to giratina, i randomly found the path after beating the league and was sure i hadn't seen it before. the only difference is that, when i first saw giratina, it startled me because the sprite was so big and came out of nowhere, so i left the cave to kinda "gather myself" and prepare to battle, and then i re-entered the cave and poof, it wasn't there anymore. it took me another few minutes to find it again, but this time i actually battled and caught it. it's memories like these that stick with you, and it's a shame indeed that newer games don't allow you to run into things organically, but rather all but spell it out for you with big icons and npc infodumps

My god, the intro filled me with all of my childhood nostalgia from discovering the Sealed Chamber, to deciphering the braille, to finally learning what was hidden from us and capturing what are easily my favorite set of non-cover legendaries of all time. I, too, had a "Kyle" who spread rumors at my school and he and I worked together to solve the mystery together. It was an absolute blast and a thing I look back fondly upon. In fact, I still have my phone's ringtone/alarm as this battle track, it means that much to me. I'm so glad I finally took the time this spring to hunt all three and can't wait to hunt them all again in Platinum down the road. Congrats on your Registeel, Matt! I was 10 and really unfamiliar with the internet as a whole but I always wanted to experiment to see if I could be the first to find something hidden. I would swim off the island until my character died of fatigue half-expecting some raid-boss-esque shark to attack me at any second. it would really put me on edge. I loved exploring the massive continents to try and traverse undiscovered areas and it was an amazing feeling to find the occasional hidden cave. I was about 9 years old when I first stumbled upon that strange diving patch. I was just looking for items I missed and wound up on an entire adventure. Having no internet made it difficult, but my school had a book on Braile and I took to reading and exploring. This is what I miss. The thrill of adventure and the suspense of what comes next. The puzzles that truly made you think or learn something new. The legendary encounters these days just don't feel legendary anymore and even the stories themselves have grown stale in my opinion. Hopefully that changes in the future, but who knows? Side note: I love the first background music you used. Definitely brought me back to those good ole Megaman Battle Network days. Cheers mate!

The Regis are my favorite legendaries as well. I remember printing out a braille cipher on one of the computers at my elementary school and translating over several car rides with my family, and having no idea how to do the Relicanth/Wailord thing at first. The Latis were another legendary group that required so much effort and preparation on the player's part back in gen 3, and I think that's a part of why I love gen 3's legends the most, because they felt so elusive and mysterious. The games are a bit too much about instant gratification now, but those of us who grew up without every answer immediately at our fingertips will always appreciate the payoff for diving deep (no pun intended) into the mystery of the Regis.

Goddamn what an adventure it was deciphering the braille with my pals in the elementary school chess club. First from braille into English and then from English to Finnish with a dictionary. I remember we were confused with Registeel for a good minute when the Eng-Fin dictionary lead us to believe we needed some kind of a frying pan key item or some overworld usable fire attack since it told *to shine* to mean *paistaa* which means both to shine (for sun) and to fry. Took us a while to even think of flash since we were all the type to grow up on Gen 1 and had got used to ignore flash from the beginning.

I'm almost 10 years older than you, but I get exactly what you mean. Even being already in high school back then, it wasn't any easier to decipher the Regi puzzles. But it had such a unique taste of discovery, that you can't find in modern games anymore.

The era of this type of discovery is pretty much over. I can't trust myself to not look at the internet if a puzzle takes more than 15 minutes.

Loved the video! Hoenn is peak nostalgia for me for pokemon hands down. And this was the same experience for me. Every year I had a summer camp and everyone would pullout Pokemon, link cables, tcg cards, ARs, Pokemon guidebooks, along with all the rumors of hidden Pokémon. And finding this as a kid with buddies was simply the most important/fascinating thing ever. Loved the video, really threw me back! PS- Loved the Mega Man BN music early in the vid! Another peak nostalgia game for me👍🏻

I'm thankful to have enjoyed such an experience as this with my copy of Sapphire when I was 9/10. I had obtained the guide after beating the game and used it for the entirety of the search for the Regis, but it was as fulfilling of an experience for me as you had described. I even went through the entire experience after finishing Diamond of migrating my Regis and discovering Regigigas. The combination of the internet and Game Freak's inability to make the 3D titles remotely as immersive as the 2D titles eventually led to Alpha Sapphire being my final entry in the series, and seeing how Sun/Moon/LetsGo/Sword/Shield turned out only made me more content with Alpha Sapphire remaining my final outing in the series.

I’m the same age as you so it was crazy to hear this story was happening to someone at around the same time I accidentally discovered the regis cave for the first time hahaha. I remember I finally figured it out what to do some months later after my cousin’s friend helped me out. I’d love to have that feeling of excitement for Pokemon all over again as when I did during that time

Pro tip. If you want any sense of that feeling ever again, go into the next major pokemon game blind. Totally blind from any leaks, trailers, anything. I did this with x and y and sun and moon and both ended up much more fun. Finding the legendary bird in x was super cool but finding guzlord in moon made me feel like a king

I never got them and I actually have a copy of alpha sapphire ready to get a Relicanth and Wailord, but I'm still waiting to get the Regis for the first time. I stopped playing pokemon after Gen 2 and came back not too long ago, it's so crazy to see all the things in different old games that are still new to me, I feel like a little kid again sometimes, not knowing how to get a pokemon, or how rare and powerful the pokemon is.

I still remember, that for some reason we had a Braille guide laying around about half a year before I got to play Pokémon Sapphire at the time. So I somehow immediately recognized the patterns thanks to that. After translating, I had no idea where to get a Wailord - and when you just explained, that you didn't realize it wasn't a Wailmer, I feel like that's very likely to be what actually happened to me as well in hindsight o_o I never ended up going back to catch any of the legendaries, or even doing particularly much in the 3rd gen of Pokémon, as I got more and more absorbed in PC games instead. But it was really awesome learning about these secrets years later ^^

Ah yes, the old dial-up days. I remember beating Metroid Prime without the internet when it came out on the GC as a 12 yr old kid, and I'm still convinced puzzle games like this have never been the same. Ironically so many people don't have the patience because of 'backtracking', when to me it was just exploring the game after school. Easy access guides now let you beat a game in less than 15 hours now. You used to have to play endlessly and explore just the same way to figure out how to complete games. Now, I think it's all about that DLC, and mass completion goals that allow games to live so long. Anyway, I appreciate this video. Thanks

When I was a kid, I starred in Diamond version and arrived at the Soloceaon Ruins, near to where you can breed. For some reason I started making a map of the caves and started making notes of which chamber each Unown letter had. I explored the region and found a cave, near the entrance of Giratina, and there was a dude who said a few words (at the time I couldn't read English) and for some other reason I noticed that each letter of Unown you get, the cave gets bigger until it passes on the other side and gets the exclamation and interrogation Unown forms. This is the most pleasant thing I did in a Pokémon game without internet or guide, I was really amazed

This video is so true man. Pokemon games as an experience really thrive on that sense of mystery and exploration; something can't feel rare or incredible if it's handed directly to you. I remember having to read about the Regi puzzles in Nintendo Power. I probably didn't even know they existed before that, they were so well hidden lol It's unfortunate how difficult it is to recapture that nowadays. It doesn't help that most people seem to think that anytime you're excited about a new game coming out, that should mean you want as much information about it as possible before the release date, even though for me I prefer knowing as little as possible.

Man, I think these are my favorite legendary quests too. I did use an internet guide for the braille but I have fond memories of staying up late, playing under the covers, and slowly following the steps of the quest. Finding the plethora of legendaries in Gen 5 isn't quite the same feeling, but I didn't use a guide for those so it still felt like a quest just to locate them all.

For me it was in my copy of Diamond when I found Giratina. I was just in this... cave... and wandered around aimlessly, hoping to get a cool new item at the end. It felt like a puzzle but... something was off. the creepy music, the fog, the pillars and inscriptions. And when I got to the chamber... It felt surreal. I had maybe 50 Pokeballs and it took me 2 full days to catch this thing. I was sacred that it would disappear... I caught it. And to this day Giratina will always be my favorite Legendary.

I remember first playing Sapphire during 4th grade, and I remember being mesmerized by the braile cave. At the time, we were actually going over braile in English class, so I was able to translate the text, and eventually find the regis. I told some people around about it, and they didn't believe me at all, like they didn't believe that missingno was real initially either. So I showed them on a copy of one of my friend's game, and everyone's minds were blown. Crazy times, man. In comparison, the regi puzzles now were way easier lol.
