I made this block in the 1980 s when I first started quilting. It has always been a favorite. 54 40 or fight was President Polk's campaign theme. My family were very distant relatives of him. I have always loved star blocks in quilting. So when I first got on the internet, i chose Anne5440 as my screen name. I eventually made lots of Ohio Star blocks because they were fast and easy. Thanks for bringing me memories.

I love the patterns these star blocks make with the acute angles in the blocks (however you decide to craft them). Some of these substitutions also help with keeping the cohesion of prints that are at the center of a block (v. shoulders).I want to share a time saving approach to consider in making this fantastic quilt that you beautifully demonstrated: reduce seaming/piecing and time by: (1) using Triangle in Square units v. 2 half rectangles ; or (2) better, use diamond rectangles in place of either (Deb Tucker has a great ruler) and treat these as a sashing; (3) simplify the uneven 9 patch (green blocks) by strip piecing the ends and putting a solid square in the middle. Also strip piece and subcut the interior four patch. A stripology ruler is a fantastic aid however you approach this.

I just found your channel and this block. I made one many years ago (about 1980) when I started quilting - it and the rest at that time were hand pieced! I’m still working on these HRTs as they can be tricky - and you have a Creative Grids ruler that I didn’t know about (I love these rulers!!!) and it’s now in my list for purchase! I really enjoyed your video and presentation as it was paced perfectly and not too fast as many others are (for some strange reason)! I’m definitely will subscribe! Thank you so much!!!!😊😊😊😊😊

I've made this block some years ago, and it really makes a beautiful quilt! I just realized though, that I reversed the light and dark for the star legs. Don't know why, i guess I was following a different pattern, but it was called 54-40 or Fight.
