About 25 years ago while attending a seminar with DH (it was for his work), I sat with a bunch of paper and a ruler and designed a bunch of quilt blocks very similar to this but never got around to actually making them because of the problem with the excess fabric in the corner. My plan was to make them with all solids due to the Amish influence in the area where DH grew up. I think you just solved my problem and I will be making another quilt soon.

Beautiful block Tracy, just looks complicated when you do the first block but actually straight forward. May I suggest if you do another one that when you put in the small bottom corner piece that you cut away the muslin and ends of block but leave both layers of you accent piece. You have a double layer with the rest of the block and this will give you the same at the bottom. Instead of a single layer , you have the same strength all the way around.

@@christenakavanagh5696 I was wondering about that. You could fold the muslin under and cut off all the little strips and then it would be like the rest! That’s a great idea!

I love all three layouts! My question is, are you going to have a company print out this quilt block onto a stabilizer so we could buy it? Would be so much easier than having marked every single block before sewing them! I would buy them!!! Thinking about taking one block to a printer to have copies made up for me!

Sewing this using the freezer paper method, measuring one block and stitching through a stack of freezer paper would speed this process up significantly! I only use the freezer paper method, did one on paper and decided I’d never rip out paper again, lol.

I tried making the 8.5 in blocks on paper. Doesn't work! Making it shorter only affects the "rays". The bottom block stays the same size and is too big for the block, affecting the design.! couldn't find my original comment to add this comment. Any ideas? 64 12 in blocks is too big for a queen bed? ( 96 by 96 without a border).. -- Nick's wife

I love this block and I plan to make this quilt. I do feel that your excessive lines was quite confusing. It would be much easier to follow if you just gave the necessary measurements for the sewing lines. Also it's much easier if you use add a quarter ruler. They just butt up against the sewn line and you cut on the edge they are not very expensive the 18 a 2 on Amazon is only 17.00. But again I do love the design

This is a very doable pattern, and you’re a great instructor. I have a question about that bottom corner piece, since it’s not backed like the rest of the block when we cut it away. Can we sew it in place and then just cut off the remainder of the block fabric and leave the backing?
