"Learning Hawaiian history is a form of resistance."
Throwback Thursday: In 1986 Haunani Kay-Trask sat down to share her thoughts concerning history from a Hawaiian perspective and it's importance specifically to Kānaka Maoli. In plight of recent events over on the American continent, Trask also shares how our kūpuna understood the concept of leadership. Our leaders, or our aliʻi, were believed to have mana that came from both the gods and from the people of whom they represented. If these leaders in anyway, shape or form began to misuse their mana, it would and could be taken away. Be this as it may, it will be interesting to see if this invaluable concept from our kūpuna, still holds true today.
