Showing how to engineer your own o-ring seal for the gas tank of my 57 Chevy car gas tank filler neck. Using the very same Gates 2 inch ID rubber hose that will connect both of my gas filler tubes together, I realized I forgot to order a o-ring seal. So I cut about 1/4 inch slice off of the round hose and using a little lubricant and dressing The Edge down it will slide into the existing Groove for the O-ring. It cost NOTHING and I can get it done NOW... the original o-ring design is not leak proof to begin with. I found the square edge of the tubing to be a little bit too thick and robust and needed a dressing down with either a belt sander or a bench grinder, being very careful to not grind off too much and careful to get it consistent all the way around. Applying some oil or lubricant makes it very much easier to slide in. This seemed to work for me.
