I made one of these back in the 70s when I worked in a metal fabricating shop. The guy who did the welding and torch cutting told me back then, "never use a drum that contained anything flammable cuz it will blow up when you start cutting and welding!" Some fifty years later I still have mine which was used for vegetable oil before we converted it. And I now see what he was talking about. You are one very blessed individual...dude!

Crankbait Baron, American or not, steel fabrication is just plain difficult. Takes a lot of patience and an artistic hand. This fella damn near blew himself up on that other barrel!

I'm glad you was able to continue. That damn 55 gallon drum grill was the best I've seen. Keep up the good work.

An easy and inexpensive way to prevent an explosion is to use baking soda and vinegar. When they mix the reaction gives off carbon dioxide, a nonflammable gas. I pour a full box of baking soda in the barrel and add a gallon of vinegar. CO2 is heavier than air so if the barrel is upright air will be forcedout first. When the barrel is full of CO2 I know it can not catch fire.
@djcomardo45125 жыл бұрын
I have heard that works. The technique I use is: Fill the barrell with water and then light the top of the water with a torch and let the vapor burn off. It has worked for me.

Wouldn’t the vinegar eat the steel away

@@cjoe5977 Eventually it might corrode the steel but you aren't leaving it there long enough to do any damage. After you're done cutting, rinse it with a hose and let it dry.

I shouldn't have laughed. But, I did. I'm glad you're ok bud. Had a welder here that made the same mistake and wasn't so fortunate. As soon as he touched the torch to it, it blew. It had acetone fumes in it. I work a a chemical company and have tons of 55 gals at my disposal. Figured I needed a smoker and I'm glad I watched your video!

Wow! I can't help it your description of the explosion had me laughing so hard at the potential calamity. I'm in construction, and it reminded me so much of the dangers of everyday work. You can't think of everything, and close calls more common than you want to think. Great video tutorial as well!

Hey brother glad you are ok. I love to watch your videos. I also weld and cut on a lot of extremely flammable barrels and have not blown up YET, the reason why is when I cut them with a torch or a grinder I always without fail put an air hose in there and pump tons of air thru it. It displaces the gas and reduces the risk of explosion greatly. Please do this as I would love to keep watching your videos.

I used ID Red to clean things I needed to weld all the time. Works awesome for that as it doesn't leave behind any film. Unfortunately, I once cleaned something over a 55 gallon drum turned into a trash can with a piece of extruded metal grate over the top. As soon as squeezed the trigger on the mig, those vapors erased most of the hair on my face, even though I was wearing a welding mask. That was a quick lesson, lol. Thank god you're ok.

I see that the burn box drops below the rim . I didn 'see that before. but you could grind/cut two cuts in the burn box to accept the burn box or two cuts in the rim of the barrel?. I know how hard it it to weld to really thin material.

I'm looking at making a smoker/grill using two 55 gallon drums welded together and an old propane tank for the smoker box. For the drums I was going to in a sense season them by burning wood in there to heat up the interior and burn off containments left over. I was wondering about the old propane tank. Since it's a small hole. I didn't realize about the explosive nature until I saw this video. Any ideas? Also thoughts on burning out containments of the barrel before cutting and welding.

A few years ago I used a propane tank and built a sand blaster but before I welded or grind I made sure all the gas was out then removed the top (didn't cut) and after the top was off I filled with water (I don't know why I did that but I was a bit afraid of the gas), then was safe for welding and grinding.
