If you are worried about chemicals leaching into your barrel from the concrete, then you should definitely NOT put the barrel on pressure-treated lumber like in the video. Also, you might want to consider using 4 pieces, not 2 to distribute the weight of a full barrel to prevent denting the bottom As barrel bottoms are designed to sit on a completely flat surface. Don't forget, the folks in areas that have sustained freezing in winter need to drain these barrels or they will split when frozen if they are not able to store them in a heated place. Cheers from Alberta, Canada.

I can blast thru (1) gallon of water no problem. Making coffee, boiling water for Oatmeal/eggs/re hydrating back packing meals etc etc. Then we need to wash dishes, decontaminating bathroom equipment or simply washing your face. 2 gallons a day (minimum) is my recommendation.
@keinlieb3818

Yep, this. Especially if you plan on bathing. My wife and I have about 5 gal per person per day. We go through about 2.5 gal a day with food prep and drinking. Only way we know this is because we live in an area that constantly has water shortages and so we've had to live off water storage for weeks at a time. We are currently in a water shortage right now going on 3 days with no water. It has been known to last up to 2 weeks, so water storage for us is a part of every day life.

HDPE is non hygroscopic, which means it does not absorb moisture. Blue #2 barrels used for food products can be cleaned to the point that there is no detectable smell or taste of the product stored previously. Black barrels have carbon mixed into the hdpe, and it is susceptible to moisture. Setting the blue barrels on concrete is not a problem.

The low water table this year in Mpls got me thinking about storing water this year. I'm interested in how to store water during the winter. What's the best way to store water in the cold and not have it freeze? Also, if storing outside in the winter what would be the best mix of chemicals since I wouldn't want to store a full 55 galllons in case it freezes and room for expansion is needed? Thanks.

@@PilotPatriot Thank you for answering my question. I've discovered some free chlorine test strips. They cost about $17 for a pack of 50 test strips. Since chemicals may not be made or mixed properly or the chlorine could react with soap residue left in the drum from washing, testing is a good idea when your health is at stake.

@@elizabethhayes1983 NO. That has a lot of sodium in the water. Use CITY WATER...PLAIN. It is never recommended to drink this softened water! The kitchen normally, has cold water, UNTREATED. Oh my gosh, why would you store it? Use common sense. CITY water, add treatment or not. I never add extra in my gallon water jugs. Fine for years. No algae growth. I have to treat it because in our area it's very contaminated. How do I treat the water prep the gallon containers the right way? I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach? Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals? Also let's say it can be used how do I start? Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks

Provident Pepper recommends using fresh, newly purchased regular unscented household bleach. Use 2 tablespoons for a 55 gallon drum. Try not to use bleach that you have around the house that isn't newly purchased or opened. Opened containers of bleach lose their effectiveness over a period of months. Best to buy fresh bleach when you do this.
