Wow!!! As a wood worker I can't imagine putting any wood on a boat without sealing all sides and edges FIRST. On a boat I would even seal the the edges and fill the voids and holes with thicken epoxy. Yes this will take a little extra time but you don't have to carry it as far as they did on Lea Lea sailboat (see their refit where everything was stained, sealed with epoxy, then 3-4 coats of varnish BEFORE installing in the boat ...all done in the cold of Alaska). Yes maybe 2 coats of epoxy to seal ALL sides and edges would prevent moisture from soaking into the wood and mold growing in places you can't see or get to latter. ALSO you are attaching to existing fiberglass cabinetry that is a part of the structure and strength of the boat. By tabbing and fiberglassing the plywood to the existing might prevent creaking and squeaky in the future as the boat wants to twist in heavy weather. I hope you won't regret taking these short cuts and it may not be to late to do some of this work but getting into those small spaces may be extremely difficult or impossible. I'd encourage you to look at all the space available and make use of it. Also try to insulate the inside of the hull where ever possible which will help with heat, cold, and water condensation inside the hull.

For future interest, you will get better bonding wood to pvc if you stuff the pc with some rough sandpaper first. The stuffing gives the glue a better ability to adhere than a glossy smooth surface. Will make a night and day difference for you!

I would recommend using contact cement glue instead of that DynaGrip, could not find actual info on its bond. Contact cement is ideal for less porous material such as PVC or plastic laminates and will also bond with many other such as wood. You need to roll it on both surfaces and leave for 15 - 20 minutes until it becomes tacky and cured, than attach both pieces together and contact cement will stick to itself. But you must make sure it lines up before attaching as its pain in ass trying to move once it starts to stick to itself. We used it all the time on plastic laminates, tub liners and even countertops and will not budge even with flex and movement.
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
Good info! Thanks. Making sure it lines up perfect is a little intimidating. Lol.
@kevinfisher13456 жыл бұрын
yea the trickiest bit, little experience helps. Really just want to line up one whole edge first than start slowly pressing rest together til you start get hang of it. Than make sure to press firmly ensure good bond all over. Keep heat gun handy in case once you get part way and realize it is bit off.
@robinturner23006 жыл бұрын
Been using contact adhesive for attaching Formica type laminates to wood for over 4 decades. It's still the right way to do it and the right product for plastic to wood. If you can, cut the plastic oversize and trim after adhesion, also if you are doing a horizontal surface, once the coating has gone off place thin laths on the wood before you place the plastic, position it and then gradually withdraw the laths to let it drop down. The laths won't stick as they don't have adhesive on them. Sometimes for awkward shapes stick thin ply (1/4"-3/8") to the plastic, cut and finish to shape then use wood glue or building adhesive to stick the ply surface to where it's going.
@stuartmcmichael52505 жыл бұрын
If your using thee contact cement just leave the pieces oversized and then finally cut your to the true size.

Jordan, I know you know a lot more about glassing than the typical "back yard" boat builder from your surf board work. You've already been fussed at in other comments for not completely sanding away the gel coat on your joints, so I won't go into that other than I agree with WolverineLiving - just keep repeating this until it becomes ingrained - "there's NO strength in gel coat, there's NO strength in gel coat, there's no strength ...." My three biggest pro tips that I can't help myself but give to you, are: Always fray the edge of any woven glass cloth. Pull a few strands out running parallel to the edge, back to 1/4 to 1/2 inch. This helps prevent de-lamination because of physical reasons that would take five paragraphs to explain. My second tip is ALWAYS use a "bedding layer" of 3/4oz or 1 1/2oz random direction mat for any weight of woven cloth. Again the reasons for this have taken whole chapters in technical books concerning the physics of two laminated materials with wildly different expansion and contraction amounts. Suffice it to say that the mat layer gives the cloth a buffer zone. It also insures a seal in the holes between the strands in the weave. My third tip is little know or used; When laminating to ply wood (or any other wood) paint a coat of resin thinned with styrene or no more than 30% acetone and catalyzed just a bit cooler than what you would for the day's conditions, with no glass, and let it kick off. This allows the resin to soak into the wood giving your lamination a bond that goes deeper into the fibers of the wood. This doesn't cure delamination from wood but it slows it down considerably. Now I need to go batten down my hatches - sitting at the bottom of N.Carolina on the I.C.W. 3 miles from the mouth of the Cape Fear River ... gonn'a be a wild weekend!

Thank you, 3DPDK. We always appreciate your feedback. We trust you as a reliable source now. We definitely feel like you know your stuff. @kevinfisher13456 жыл бұрын
Yea I always see professionals fray the ends, quite often they will tear it instead of cutting when they can for that exact reason. Great tip with your 3rd one, you always want to prep wood to allow it to soak in as much as possible, even plywoods which most people do not think about.

@bowwave596 жыл бұрын
A Few Questions from across the Pond. Is it cost with the glues your using? Would you not use a marine glue or epoxy glue for bonding? Is the salt air going impact any bonded surfaces? The boat will bend and twist when sailing and there’s expansion and contraction with temperature all straining whatever’s glued.
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
bowwave paul, from my experience epoxy doesn't like to stick to plastics/pvc. I could be wrong but that's why we didnt try epoxy. We were thinking 5200 or something similar but it doesn't have an instant grab component and clamping up the pvc would have been almost impossible. That's why we went with an exterior grade construction adhesive. If it fails, we didnt use it in a lot of places so it will be easy to redo.
@floydgraves39976 жыл бұрын
@@LearningtheLines If you do re do the PVC on the sides with the port lights I'd suggest you do the same as you did with the ceiling and strip it with wood and insulate the cabin walls first. This will help with the heat, cold and condensation ... your over all comfort. Just a thought.

I always wonder about respirators.. of you are covering your mouth, what is stopping 'stuff' going into your eyes... that full face is a good fix... you should have linked that to. and not that it probably matters -- but a question for me --- at 3:31 you covered the wall/wood with fiberglass, did you consider filling in those round circles... or are those needed for instruments on the other side
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
They were instrument holes. We don't plan to reuse them as of now. We had redone the fiberglass laminate on the exterior before painting, but didnt fill the plywood back in. The laminate is rather thick. Didn't think it was necessary.
@svbarryduckworth6286 жыл бұрын
A sink is a sink. It'll be fine as far as rust/corrosion. We put a standard mini-size bar sink in our head. The only thing that fit nicely. The issue is getting the drain to adapt to the marine hose without getting a sketchy cobbled-up adapter below the waterline. It looks like your sink drain might already be below waterline already on a port tack. ours is in our HR-35 when we are heeled over more than 20-degrees or so. Be sure your drain to hose adapter is sturdy under the sink. If it is fragile residential PVC components and breaks apart the hose could possibly drop down below the waterline and flood/sink the boat eventually. That's how Wicked Salty lost their boat last year with their head sink. Best to secure and support the drain hose so that if it does fall off the sink somehow it can't possibly fall below the waterline and siphon water into the hull.
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын

Hrm. KZbin comments are pretty much the reason why so many good boat/sailing blogs have disappeared. I still miss BoatFam and anyone without an extremely thick skin will get discouraged when faced with such negativity. Things are coming together. I would consider a cutting board the size of the sink extension with wood dowels that slip into holes into the countertop and a standoff. That would completely eliminate someone stepping on the sink and give you a good cutting board location where you can scrape vegetables and whatever off into a bowl firmly anchored in the sink basin. Just a thought, but you will easily have enough power in your Battleborn batteries to run a microwave. At one point there was a Stove + Microwave combo that gimbles: www.westmarine.com/buy/force-10--stove-with-microwave-cabinet--3779493 Thanks for sharing.

SenatorPerry, Thanks for the kind words! Personally I love negative comments from the armchairs. I'm always of the mentality that if you're pissing people off then you're doing something right. It's impossible to appease everyone, so there's no reason to try.
@svbarryduckworth6286 жыл бұрын
@@LearningtheLines Exactly. F 'em and feed 'em fish. It is your boat. Do what you want with it. Make your own wins and mistakes. Most of the armchairs probably couldn't even figure out how to get out of the harbor in a sailboat on their own.

Definitely appreciate them sharing! We browsed them a bit and they were crazy expensive. Found ourselves looking at other options pretty quickly. Lol. A marine sink this size would be $300-$600.

Hello, just a friendly tip, always grind down to glass, never glass to gelcoat. It's not "ok" or "good enough" and your tabbing should be removed and done correctly..
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
Since it's not a structural piece, we're going to leave it as is. We appreciate the friendly tip and understand it should be done that way, but for its purpose this will suffice.
@onlyychevys6 жыл бұрын
Gel coat is polyester resin with tint in it for color and is plenty strong for what you are doing. 35 years in the business and I have never had a problem. Use very coarse sand paper for the best bond. Yay Uma for sharing! Looking good guys.
@3DPDK6 жыл бұрын
onlychevys Williams: Gel coat also has a particulate filler to give it body so it wont sag. This makes gel coat much more brittle than pure polyester. If Jordan had tried this in a production boat assembly line he would have been told to grind it down and do it over.
@onlyychevys6 жыл бұрын
This is not a production line, it is a refab on an older boat. Always the keyboard experts, let them build their boat.
@3DPDK6 жыл бұрын
Doesn't matter. Not a "keyboard expert", but a fiberglass boat builder since 1974... learned fiberglass when you had to mix cobalt into the resin ... look that up.

What and where did you get your face mask and filters?
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
The filters we picked up at Home Depot. They're the 3M ones for particulates and chemicals. The masks we got off ebay. They're a knock off of the 3M full face masks. Jordan found them, but I think he probably searched full face respirator.

As a professional ship Captain I learned years ago that those on the jetty know much more about handling the vessel than the hapless crew onboard. It seems it might be the same thing with with fitting out the interior of a boat? So I’ll share what I also learned back then ... press on, your ship is awesome and is going to arrive well, whatever the jetty folk say. Good luck guys ..... thanks for sharing your voyage. 👍☺️

@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
River life must be nice too. For some reason we've never been big fans of Hunters. Just a personal opinion, mainly because they have no backstay lol. They should do fine sailing the Caribbean and tons of people love them. In my opinion it's all about how you feel when you get on the boat. Does it feel right to you.

Nothing wrong with an Ikea sink. If the sink is the typical alloy used with normal stainless sinks-usually 304 low carbon or one of the 400 series-you should not see too much rust unless you let normal carbon (cast iron or non-stainless) steel sit against the sink and begin to rust. Also if you keep the sink rinsed and wiped down it should last you for many years. Just don't let salt water sit in the sink or stand on the drain board for hours or days and you will be fine. Your galley is starting to look good. Keep up the good work.

I'm not sure he did specific vidz on that subject, but he sure knows his stuff by now.....with a bit of helpful advice from boatworkstoday. Balance the boat from the waterline stain so your sink will be level with the world when you put the boat in the water.

Now that the counter is flat it should be fine. Thanks for watching!
@peterkacandes59056 жыл бұрын
Learning the Lines I wonder if it’s possible that the counter was purposely angled that way instead of level in order to facilitate drainage of liquid toward the sink maybe?
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
It was, but it didn't function properly due to having an over mount sink so water just pooled in the center.

Where did you get the mask?
@LearningtheLines6 жыл бұрын
We got it on eBay.
@johnshoureas16296 жыл бұрын
I did not see you form a fillet. All you did was fill in the space where the plywood was not touching the fiberglass. A fillet is formed by using the radius end on a tongue depressor or similar shaped tool so that the epoxy is flared out at the base of the plywood. Then you add the strip fiberglass cloth over the fillet with epoxy, to extend the width of area for added strength.

Don't use a chemical respirator for particulates. A "dust mask" works a lot better and you will be much more comfortable.

These masks are actually pretty comfortable, and luckily 3m makes particulate and chemical (combo) filters that go into these masks.

Our boat isn't level, hence why we didn't use the level as a level. We just used it as a straight edge. The jack stands under the boat aren't perfect so we had to adapt.
