The astable configurations of a 555 timer is a great analog way to create a square wave and, in this tutorial, we figure out how it's set up and what's going on inside. Josh goes in depth on how the astable configuration works and goes into, perhaps, agonizing detail about why it acts the way it does. After showing the external circuit configuration and reviewing the internal processes involved, he shows a real life example using a 555 timer hooked up to the oscilloscope, and discusses a few important real-life considerations when designing the circuit.
