I've used the Pentax 67 system for almost 40 years. I own and use lenses from 35mm to 400mm. The video is correct, in that after a :normal: focal length lens, the second selection should be a version of the 55mm 4.0. There were four versions of 55mm offered by Pentax over the years. The first was the 55mm 3.5. While it enjoys something of a cult following, this first version reflects the design and available glass options from the mid-1960s and is optically inferior to the later versions. The next two versions are 55mm 4.0 and look identical, representing a minor design change made on the fly with no separate marking to distinguish the two. The final version, what he shows here, is distinguished by the lens label being marked around the front of the focus ring rather than on the retaining ring surrounding the front lens element. All of these versions are optically indistinguishable in practical use, and all are just superb. The earlier versions show a conventional, slight, roll-off in image sharpness from image center into the edges/corners. The last version has almost no roll off of sharpness or contrast cross the entire image. We're splitting hairs here, and in normal usage, you'll never see a difference between them. The 55mm 4.0 is my second most used lens, and it is possibly one of the best lenses in the P67 line-up.

@randallstewart1224 Maybe you can help me with your experience. I am about to buy a 55. I have the offer to get a 3.5 in mint condition at a great price. The extra weight doesn't bother me and I find the design much nicer than the new ones. I'm just afraid that the f4 is so much better that I'll want to change again at some point. I'm not a pixelpeeper, but if the difference is really clear, I'd rather take the f4. If not, the 3.5. hm - any ideas? ☀️
@randallstewart12244 ай бұрын
@@dfhdasfj Well, price does make a difference. On the other hand, it's probably a once in a lifetime purchase. I've never paid attention to size or weight differences, so no comments on such considerations. The optical differences reflect their generations. The 3.5 is sharp in the image center, and tails off quite a lot into the corners. I've not tested one, but I suspect there is a noticeable vignetting (darkening of edges/corners). Of the 4.0 models, the last is virtually uniform in sharpness across the whole image and suffers no noticeable vignetting. The prior 4.0 is nearly the same performance, being a tiny bit sharper than the last 4.0 in the center, and falling off a tiny bit toward the edges. Without formal image testing and resolution charts, I doubt anyone would see a difference between the two. At some time, I owned both 4.0 versions. I never considered the 3.5 for two reasons. The lesser was that at the time, the 3.5 was being hyped to death, and it was much over-priced. The material reason was that I use a lot of filters. The 3.5 uses an oddball 95mm filter thread. When it was new, it was so hard to get filters for it that Pentax sold a line of filters just for that lens. (Now classed as "unobtainium".) Today, filters in that size might be available from Zeiss, but you're probably looking at $150+ a filter. IMO, even the early, less accomplished Pentax 67 lenses are good enough for 95% of any use. I doubt you see a difference in terms of image between any of the versions, unless you sart making darkroom prints larger than 16x20 inches. If you are scanning and digitally processing images, the scan process alone will erase any differences.

Delighted to see you reviewing this lens. The 55 and 90 are the only two from the set that I would have wanted to try, but never had the chance. If I ever went back to this system I'd definitely nab a 55, but I'd be torn between the 90's close focus and 105's iconic look. 55 is a no brainier though, and you have some really fantastic work with it here.
@pushingfilm4 ай бұрын
@@Shaka1277 Thanks Alex! Yeah the 90 looks fantastic, but for me the 55 is "different" enough from the 105 I have (and cheaper!). Wouldn't mind trying it someday though. I've also been wanting to try my 105 with a close-up filter!

Good timing on your video Hashem :) I bought my Pentax 67 a few months ago now, and the two lenses i opted to get was the 105mm and the 55mm actually. I do not think im getting another lens for this kit , might be one of the smaller lenses out theer in that case to keep the weight down. My back is not liking the Pentax 67 to begin with and more lenses would make it hate me even more ;) I have not shot a ton with my 55 yet, but i really like the 28mm FL from earlier on other cameras, so the 55 was kind of a no brainer for me. And i like the images i have seen thus far at least :) Just made a little video update myself and the Pentax 67 with those two lenses are featured in there as well, nothing like review or so just some opinions and images taken with that lens combo . Also liked your shots with it in this video. Oh also interesting with the adapter for the 645 pentax. Was not aware you could adapt them on there, might be intersting option to for a lighter setup at times but share lenses :) Happy shooting! /regards Martin.

@@pushingfilm Yes glad to be in it now :) only got those 2 lenses thus far though. But been looking a bit at the 75 as well, the newer ones. But shooting like i do im kind of set with one great wide angle and one portrait lens wit the 55/105, so not really in a rush to add anything else. I think i have adjusted to it a bit already. And the right bag made a ton of difference too, got the Tenba fulton V.2 bag with which you can open up and top which works great for the 67. So very happy with that. Still...its heavy hehe. The video is just sort of an update video of what i recently acquired ( some accessories for the 67 among other things ) , and some photos taken with each camera etc. /regards Martin.

Just acquired a 67 and several lenses, but don't have this one, looks useful. This beefy beast of a camera is a new adventure for me, thanks for your tips. Wondering what res to scan these big negs at to capture all the resolution in the negs.
@pushingfilm3 ай бұрын
Nice congrats. Any base resolution is fine for online/screen usage, but for printing medium to large sizes, or cropping, I'd scan at high res.

This lens provided my favorite image of the year thus far. All though not on my 67. Using it in free lens mode with the K1 provided a father daughter photo that was simply Sereal.

Yeah, nice video. I've had the 55mm for quite some time and my copy is ridiculously sharp. I think at the time the 45mm was the hot lens and more expensive.
@RadovanFaltus4 ай бұрын
These 67 lenses are kind of not affected by recent film hype, probably because the system is simply über heavy. Still I do not get one exception, the prices for 75/2.8.
