Wow! I never thought I could get a time this low.
This run had a slow start but then everything kept going extremely well afterwards.
By coincidence, this was run on 12/12/2022, a day before the new update dropped.
** Note this was run on the version before the December 2022 update. This version had no unstuck command, table coral split into multiple, and faster jump speed among other differences. **
** Retimed to 56:19 per speedrun.com mod. End split was slightly late. **
This was a much lighter grind than previous runs. I just wanted to have some fun trying out a new base placement and some little strategy adjustments. But after the 9:30 rad warning the luck just never stopped coming.
If you're wondering why the shallows split is so far behind, I moved some of the scrap gathering and crafting from the end of the run to the beginning. That time lost at the beginning is saved at the end.
My sparse reef strategy is based on the one used by Rivukis / @rivukis

Q: How do you break rocks so fast?
A: I use my mouse's scroll wheel which I set to have the same action as left-click in the game settings. The same applies to right-click.
Q: How do you skip the intro?
A: Hold escape when it asks you to press a button to continue. If you're on console, it will be a console-specific button instead.
Q: Why doesn't your food level drop?
A: If you eat while your food level is below 100, it can go above 100. The level constantly drops but the visual doesn't move as long as it's 100 or above.
Q: How did you enter that wreck without glitching?
A: The opening to the wreck with the laser cutter fragments is passable until the Aurora explodes. Before then, we can go through without clipping or glitching.
Q: How did you descend through the Lost River without a vehicle?
A: 2 high-capacity oxygen tanks, 1 standard oxygen tank, and lots of practice. Don't bother with this if you're a new speedrunner since it saves less than 30 seconds over the standard method of making a base to die and respawn with full oxygen.
Q: Why do you build empty bases / deconstruct the hatch?
A: Entering a base saves the inventory so it's not lost when I die. If I don't want to respawn at that base I deconstruct the hatch.
Q: How do you know when the Aurora is going to explode?
A: The first radiation warning you get from your PDA happens between 9:12 and 16:00 after the start of the game. Multiply that time by 5x to get when the explosion will happen.
Q: Why do you build the Cyclops?
A: The Cyclops is the only place you can build the shield generator needed to finish the rocket. The Cyclops has no other purpose in this run.

@@mac1270 if you have prawn suit with grappling arm and drill arm that's probably your best bet, once you get close to max depth you can use drill arm on kyanite nodes, just don't fall down any of the holes. Or you can jump out and pick up the small pieces with your seaglide. Bring health kits and/or reinforced dive suit. I recommend about 12- 14 pieces if you want to build a bunch of stuff with it. You only need 6 for minimalist game completion.

So far my best is just over 3hrs, but i'm getting better. Experimenting with actually using a cyclops instead of building extra bases. I assume it goes faster than the seaglide, you have to build it anyway and it would reduce traveling distances.

Im not a speedruner, but I always watch the speedrun for my games after finish it once. Speed runners always got optimized strats that worth looking into. Also yes. In Subnautica, Seaglide is OP. All enemies cant hit moving target, or cant even detect fast moving stuff. The guy memorize all caves to make the route for Seaglide.

If you have less than 3-4 playthroughs this is probably pretty average. I didn't get my finish time down to 12hrs until I had about 5 or 6 finishes. And only recently was I interested in trying to speedrun. Sitting at just under 3 hrs for now, but i'm getting better. Cyclops parts really slow me down.

Cinnamon Cookies, have you considered working the island portal into your run? Because the cyclops shield generator is very close to the second island and portaling there would save a lot of travel time. Depending on your route this might not be ideal for you. Just wanted to put it out there though. Also I assume you got really lucky with those 3 nickel ores at the bottom of your descent to the power plant because i've done multiple plays and had an extremely hard time finding nickel in that area.

Thanks! Yeah I came up with a weird setup to reach the wreck involving going over a specific hill, surfacing for 10 seconds, and descending at an angle that makes the depth number tick down to the beat of the song "Time" by Pink Floyd.

The sandstone in the safe shallows that comes in bunches of 3 always spawn in the same place. Almost everything else is RNG, or more like they have specific places where RNG rolls give them a chance of spawning.

If you refill the tanks above water then unequip them they keep their air, they dont recharge underwater
