What a gorgeous car Kiwi, when you opened the front passenger’s door I looked under the dash and for a second I thought there might be the RCA 5 record player ha ha . Wasn’t the smoothest operation but it was style. It had a weighted stylist to try to keep it from skipping , oh well. How many of those have you seen ?

Many many years ago [mid '70's] I was driving home after work with my GF in my '39 Plymouth when I spied a restored 1934 Buick Coupe in a local service station. Naturally I pulled in to check it out. Turns out it was in for a service & the two blokes that worked there wanted to put it away for the night, but had no idea how to start it. That's when I remembered something I had overheard some years before. I smugly said I could start it, then realised that I was about top be a hero or a zero in the next few moments. Fortunately is used the throttle pedal start method, & I wondered just how far back that system went, but it was certainly in use in this particular '34 Buick series 40 Coupe.

Yeah! Tightening up the steering is good idea! Like a peach cream car paint! What do you recommend for a riveted floor pan? Weld bottom on top and bottom seam or tack it in, or replace the panel? I mean cutting rivets out!

Technically, a Dagmar is a _conical_ protrusion (as found on the '55 Caddy Eldorado), as the name comes from an actress Virginia Dagmar, who was known for wearing a somewhat pointy bra in the '50s. That said, Buick does still refer to them as dagmars, even though they don't always conform strictly to the origins of the term. Incidentally, the rubber-tipped ones as found on the '57 Chev were sometimes called "pasties." 😁

Beautiful. I have a thing for '50s cars. I've owned a couple of 1950s Chevy trucks. They had a starter pedal in the floorboard, that wasn't actually attached to the floorboard, it was attached directly to the starter, and stuck through a hole in the floor. One barrel carburetor on a V8. And I'm assuming that is an oil bath air cleaner. I never understood the idea behind the torque tube setup. Real pain to work on. While that is not the right way to replace a floor pan, at least it's a body on frame car, so the floor pans are really structural. The vent winds are a necessity in cars without A/C. My neighbor used to have a 1951 Buick 4 door with the DynaFlow (does not flow) transmission. He had so much trouble with that transmission that he finally gave up and sold it.

I had bought a 4 door sedan 1959 Buick Special with P.S.,P.B.,A.T.,& 322cid V-8 engine. It started in exactly in same manner as that 1956 car. I bought this ‘59 Buick back in 1975 and gave it to my 2 year younger sister to drive.I had a 1967 Mercury Cougar with a 6.5 litre and 4 speed to drive. This 1959 Buick saved my younger brother and sister’s lives. Sister was in the process of making a left turn on the green arrow of the light standard when a 1971 Firebird owner decided to challenge the light and accelerated into the old Buick. Result was a few scratches on my sister and brother, and a burnt Pontiac Firebird carcass. The Firebird owner got out alive due to the fact he had just left the corner Pub. Unfortunately the ‘59 Buick’s body had been pushed along the frame a bit, front doors were jammed but my brother figured out the rear doors were operable. That car ended up totaled by our government vehicle insurance.I had bought that car for $200 at that time.

I'm a SEDAN fan! Having grown up in the 60's riding both in front and back of a COUPE, what a PITA! Either you're trapped in the back seat and have to climb over the front seat to get out, or get out to let a back seat passenger do the same! While I agree CoupA's are always better looking, the 4 doors are way more "ergonomic" if you've got passengers! BTW, really like that old Buick but here in FL, no A/C is a death sentence....

It was really cool how at that time Buick used to put the year of the car on the emblems on the trunk lid and in the grille. I like how it was so clearly visible in the introduction to the video when the camera was focused on the trunk emblem.

Yes sir, we had some wild color and trim options on the cars from the fifties, as well as interior options and the styling to reflect the jet fighters. Of course we must remember that the people who were coming into the industry as younger generation stylists and such were those people who were youngsters who participated in the second world war and as they assimilated back into society brought a lot of styling and engineering that they witnessed over in Europe while stationed there. We had a 1957 Pontiac Chieftan that was originally black with yellow trim (the roof and the side trim). The interior was a three color mixture of white, black, and grey. This car was a 2dr hardtop and of course had the 347 engine and the Hy dramatic transmission but no power steering nor power brakes. My dad painted the car a green (a Dodge color) and white trim combination. My sister had a crash where the right rear quarter panel was damaged and my dad repaired it and repainted the car a British racing green with an arctic snow white top and trim. He repainted the dashboard white and resprayed the door panels grey and the rest of the interior was ok. My dad also repaired the transmission (his co-workers said that it could not be done) and we rebuilt the engine. It was a good car and it ran very well (I even got to take it out after I got my driver's license in 1969). Wonderful memories.

I'd paint it black and put a gumball on it and Highway Patrol decal on it. I can relate to that. Watched the shw all the time. Crooks got instant karma each time

WOW Kiwi what a piece of ART!! Such a breath of fresh air compared to that RED Mustang POS. So nice to see someone like that appreciates works of ART like this. You are so right that you would probably have to take out a second mortgage to have the chrome redone on that beauty. 🙂

an auto auction in my local area had this poster on a wall that mentioned "Dagmars" I did a quick google search and copied this off wikipedia... The Dagmar bumper consists of dual chrome bullet-point bulges ("dagmars") on the front bumpers of Cadillacs, Buicks and Packards built during the 1950s. The term was coined by customizers in direct reference to Dagmar, an early 1950s television personality well known for her pronounced cleavage on Broadway Open House.

The foot starter should be on every Buick until I think '58? model year. Have not driven one since about 1960!
