560SL - Installing Driven Plates - Flywheel

In this video, I demonstrate my way of installing the Driven Plates for the M117 engine. Additionally, I offer a technique I used for holding the crankshaft so you can easily torque the Driven Plates without tipping over the engine in the process. Tony, what torque did you use for the three bolts that plate to the ring you used.

Very good question. Thanks for asking. I did not take the ring gear off so I did not torque them. I believe they are locking nuts and I am not sure if they are reusable. The bolts, nuts and spring washers are still available. I have looked in all my different documents and I am unable to find any torque specs for those three bolts. If you do learn this information please come back and share it. I will keep my eyes open as well.

Tony I'm a step ahead of you on my 560. Here's my forward tips - I put the oil pan gasket on before the rear plate. I didn't notice the rear plate had pushed the gasket in; it leaked oil and I had to take the engine back out of the car and pull the oil pan gasket. Now it is bone dry. Mating the engine and transmission is tough. The trans shaft may appear to be in but if you don't get it in the right orientation there will be a 7-8mm gap. Sometimes it goes in first try. But I found that it mostly goes in correctly every 5th time. So just be on the lookout for the gap when you mate them. If they are aligned properly the bell housing should meet the back of the engine without force.

Thanks for the tips! I just completed the mating of the transmission to the engine. It went together very easy on the first try for me. Hopefully I got it right. You will see a detailed video of how I did it later today. I hope I don’t have oil leaks. Not much I can do about that at this point anyway.
