I took off connecting rod cap, removed the bearing and was surprised to see what I saw, check out the video, and learn for yourself! Could this trick Japanese manufacturer used, help save you from aggravation of a spun crankshaft bearing happening to you? Check and decide for yourself

The rod is honed to size. Bearing crush is what keeps it from spinning if honed to proper zize. Then oil clearance is correct for proper lubrication and no spun bearing.

This is the standard machining process used in sizing that rod, it will result in a clean cross hatch pattern all the way around.. no trick or secret. The discoloration I suspect is from a coating on that bearing or a strange method that Isuzu possibly uses.

Every motor I have ever freshened up I have always cleaned the scale build up on the BE cap and rod end, other wise the new shells are sitting on the scale. I use 600 grit emery tape and it cleans up the cap and rod end perfectly with no noticeable difference to bearing clearance. This enables the new bearing shell to clip in nice and firm and sit on the the steel surfaces instead of the black scale giving better heat transfer. If i find that the shell feels a bit loose then it’s time to get the rods resized. Well thats the way I do it and have great results in doing it this way and I have no idea what this bloke is talking about

What your seeing is the result of the bearing caps being ALIGN HONED, NOT SANDPAPER. Any PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC would know this.

Marks on the cap are much more shallow, finer. Marks on the bearings hard outer rim are bigger, crude, deeper! Ain't no imprint from the cap, finer marks on the cap, can't cause these bigger, deeper marks on the bearings outer rim

What prevents spun bearings... Is that groove in the cap, block and bearing. The crosshatching is called honing.

bearings crush when they are torqued, the locating pin has nothing to do with keeping it in.

Older motor surfaces and a lot of machine shops will the leave surfaces rougher for some reason. Sometimes it's because they are in a hurry and other times it's because to "grip" the gaskets and bearings. IDK, high end builders will tell you they should be as smooth as a baby's butt. I personally like them with a little texture for the gaskets and the bearings super smooth. To each their own.

I'm kinda wondering myself, with the amount of heat that saw, it didn't spin. You might be on to why. Others have said their say but can't say why it is not spun yet. Should have spun lots of heat ago. but didn't.

BS! The crosshatching marks on the bearing surface of the cap were made when the bore was honed to clearance. They are the same kinds of marks that are visible on cylinder walls of and engine that hasn't been run yet. The crosshatch marks appear on the back of the bearing shells because the shells have been pressed onto them during initial run-in. They have NOTHING to do with any attempt, conscious or otherwise to prevent spun bearings. THAT is accomplished by careful measuring, machining and assembly.

That bearing hasn't spun, it's been hot, and probably out of round, but it's not spun in the bore yet, the blackness shows the bearing has been moving in the cap, and likely in the upper half as well

So, what is the actual proof this technique helps avoid a spun bearing? Does this kind of engines famous for their resistance to spun bearing? By the way, when the car is idling, a crankshaft spins at about 12 revolution per second. It's hard to believe some "microscratches" can keep a bearing from spinning at such speeds. I'm not even saying what is going on at about 5000rpm of the engine.

the bearing tang keeps it. from spinning. it. hone marks you. couldn't sand in a cross hatch pattern at the same pattern by hand. but the manufacture honing for. sizing.

You are correct tag prime task is for bearing alignment Have seen many of bearing main or rods that had material separation for several reasons oil starvation to foreign material Penetration causing bearing heating looses crush and the only thing holding the bearing from spinning was the tang I had fourth years of diesel technician servicing Thanks for your Responce it was appreciated

People too many here comment, but it's not it. Honed etc. You can say hone used on the cap. Don't you see deep sandpaper marks on the bearing outer rim? What hhhhhone there?????? Just start thinking! No way a hone used on the bearing outer rim, to create those deep marks! The cap "hone" marks as claimed by some, you should realize it, will never imprint on the caps outer rim. That is too much to hope for! And from this you start to see, that the cap has been scratched with sandpaper, nothing else, and exactly to prevent a spun bearing. By the way, the caps even if hone used on them, they come from the manufacturer very smooth! Not with this kind of crude marks! Just never! They come with much nicer, smoother surface! As for bearings, they come very smooth inside out, bearings outer rim is super hard, it won't take no impression! At least this engine bearings absolutely are very hard on the outside. Stop kidding yourself, here even, if you have rebuilt engines. Just confess honesty, you have never seen a cap and the bearing with such crude scratches, coming from manufacturer new!!!! Man, I am appaled by nonsense spoken! The Hone is much milder, than these crude marks. And the marks on the cap, as you see in the video are milder, the marks on the bearings outer rim are quite cruder, bigger larger than marks you got on the cap, hence this is no imprint! Think critically, and analyze!

The point is that it's true, the engine assembling person used sandpaper in criss cross pattern, to scour the bearing outer rim, to induce traction, and increase chances of spun bearing prevention. And this is how it came from the truck plant. The bearing caps, the crank bearings themselves always come from manufacturer ultra smooth. Ultra smooth is how you would receive them, if you buy, ultra smooth is how truck assembly plant receives them, these parts. Yet you see the employees that assembled the engine scoured the parts, and the only sense that it makes as to why scour, is to increase traction, and prevent spun bearing occuring
