I encourage you to read Jeff Sharlet's excellent books," The Family," and "Undertow." The whole mystery of toxic "Christianity " is unraveled. I have also read Jesus and John Wayne," by Kristin DuMez who was on the show last year. Another deeper dive was written by Anne Nelson's "The Shadow Network." Katherine Stewart wrote " The Power Worshippers, " after ten years of journalistic investigation into the underbelly of the Religious Right Nationalists. All insightful journalism by History Professors, and investigative journalists. Theee of these authors are devoted Christian believers, who have become alarmed at the direction the Evangelical Church has gone. I urge the hosts and the listeners to at least read Jeff Sharlet's books, although the authors mentioned do an excellent job of revealing the basic heresy at the heart of the mess in which we find ourselves, both politically, and spiritually. There is so much going on beneath the surface that we do not see. By the way, many devoted believers outside the black church vote Democratic. I am tired of being called Marxist and baby killer. Cheap shots that do not have any interest in engaging in a civil discussion about views with a different perspective. All nuance thrown out in favor of knee jerk reactions and mud slinging. @@waltercarmichael100 Okay and that’s fair; “liberal” and “conservative” can be funny words; I will not dispute that. About the coronation. There is an oath that KC3 needs to take by law, Coronation Oath Act of 1689. It probably could be given in a style of an inauguration type ceremony, but when you have a piece of legislation called "Coronation Oath Act" it implies there will be a coronation. I'm willing to bet the only way this could be changed is by an act of Parliament. In terms of the pageantry...there is this little classical piece from Britain called "Pomp and Circumstance". It's what they do best. Also, I do believe QEII was a Christian. If you listen to her Christmas speeches she you can tell she was a believer. From her first Christmas speech in 1952, "Pray for me … that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life." Billy Graham disclosed in an interview back in 2000 or 1999 that he and The Queen had a regular correspondence going and it would not surprise me if the issue of her faith came up. I get it it's not your thing that's fine, but the attitude was uncalled for.

Being Australian and a beneficiary of the British age of influence, I enjoyed watching the placement of the crown ceremony. It took us nearly a thousand years to divest them of real power, starting with King John at Runnymede, and now we have a nice relationship, they do good works and we enjoy the spectacle. There is a long and very human story, the human story, behind the situation as it now is. I am glad there is this tangible thing to connect us to our history our story, the good the bad and the indifferent. Doing away with these symbols of a past age, something that actually happened, isn't going to make us better people I think. History is about the struggle for power and dominance of competing ideas and the people who hold them. It is happening now as it always has.

I think the dipsy-doodling story of its origin does a lot of that. Reading N. T. Wright's tomes (NTPG, JVG, RSG) nailed the coffin shut for me. My process began when I realized what sweeping swaths of Scripture Jesus fulfilled in his first coming and tried to extend the same point of view to eschatology. To expect him to fulfill only these little bits snipped out from here or there and then turned into some kind of timetable (even a movable one that nobody serious pegs to a particular date)? God as I understand him was too big for those teeny weeny living quarters. (He's not your genie!) So... I've been a pan-trib / pan-millennialist for a long time now. If you're looking for a verse-by-verse deconstruction of it? The best work on the Trinity is Augustine's 15 volumes "On the Holy Trinity" No analogy captures every part of anything it makes an analogy to, but by combining analogies, a person can get to a lot of detail. For example: I ate a fruit, once. It hung from a vine until I picked it. It had a consistency between that of an apple and a banana, and was as sweet as a peach. It was red, heart-shaped, and the outside was dotted with dozens of tiny, brown seeds. I haven't told you what fruit this is, but I bet you know. What's more, if you didn't know, I bet I could give you this description and send you to the store to buy me more of this fruit even if you had never seen it or heard of it before. It isn't a peach. It isn't an apple, it isn't a banana. It isn't a heart. But by taking the elements of each in their way and applying them by analogy, I paint an accurate picture that describes the thing. Such it is with analogies with the Trinity. There's why to just say "I have the analogy for the Trinity!" Doesn't work. The thing to do is to find out what the person's problem is. I've had a lot of people who get hung up on the language from the middle ages. They think "substance" and "material" are synonyms, and when we say that God has a substance that think that means he's a physical thing. It bothers me that some people get hung up on language. When speaking with friends that know object oriented programming, I'll explain substance in terms of classes and replace the word "person" with "instance." I've had a few programmer friends that understand substance after that. (Back to the fruit analogy above, there is often another aspect that needs to be cleared up after that.) But it bugs me when people get all bent out of shape going, "Oh it's not class, it's substance!" without being able to explain what either are.

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil it was so they could become like God, taking the role of moral law giver for their own lives. Almost immediately they judged God's actions as wrong and shameful, seeing fault in their nakedness. When God questioned why they chose that Adam blamed Eve and God himself. Since then humans have sought to be in charge of themselves, inventing their own sense of right and wrong rather than submit to anyone else's rule or measure. At various times, even when people have sought to adopt God's rule, they make the mistake of adopting his laws, giving their own interpretation of them, and then assuming their own piety, sovereignty, in essence Godliness, as a result. We are fooled into thinking following the right rules makes us righteous. The Bible is clear this is not the case. As such, the instatement of a ruler who can enforce the rules feels necessary to grant us the sovereignty we crave. We might convince ourselves that it's right because we are using the laws of a sovereign but that's an effort to usurp an authority that does not exist in the laws but in the moral law giver. We are supposed to submit, not make others submit to us or anyone else. Interestingly, this is also the point about Kings. The people were supposed to submit to the rulership of a king as he submitted to the rulership of God. This is why Jesus is the ultimate example of a king. From Philippians 2: 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. And to reiterate the point of Jesus' obedience "yet not my will but yours." A king serves his people, all his people, not just the ones who would vote for him to retain office. A king is sacrificial. A king knows from birth who his parent is and what he is expected to do to live up to the responsibility he has been given. A king must be shaped and molded to fulfill God's agenda, not his own, and submit to The Father. And whatever the people do to honour their king, to show respect and submission, is done in service to the true King. And any ceremonies and rites that are observed help us to remember we should be in submission and service, not attempting to take all power, control and sovereignty for ourselves. I beseech us all to submit to God as best we can, to recognise we are flawed and so are not well positioned to force our interpretations of God's laws on others but understand we all need grace. We must be wary of anyone who tells us they can get us control, rulership, more freedom over our own lives as these are seductive phrases that speak to our original sinful nature, not necessarily truth. The serpent used the same technique, Satan said the same to Jesus in the dessert, "use your God given power to serve yourself, take his authority for your own, gain rulership over others." We are biased to desire such things and must be ready to reject them and trust in God to carry out his will. May God bless you as you put him first.

@Theinternalrewrite Жыл бұрын
@@hapennysparrow so much of the bible speaks against the snares that have taken fundamentalists. Not just the teachings of Jesus or the letters of the apostles but so many stories of the old testament too. The pharisees failed to acknowledge Jesus because they failed to trust in scripture over their own sense of righteousness. They ignored what God wanted of them believing they knew better though their ways only ever left them wandering in a wilderness and forced to toil and live off meagre scraps, waiting for God to notice they were deserving of the promised land and its blessings. They never looked at themselves and realised they were not worthy, would never be worthy, and recognise, in the resulting despair, was the hope of deliverance given by the one who was greater, more righteous. Who wishes to learn all their toil is not working toward anything, that all their choices are wrong, that their self worth has all the value of a used sanitary pad? The Bible helps us to understand the many ways we might screw up. When we've got one thing sorted we're probably getting a different bit wrong. That's why we're supposed to use it on ourselves, not others. But the law is to convict, not condemn. And yet to avoid fear and shame people rewrite or reinterpret the laws to make themselves feel good and belittle others. True faith can take the criticism because salvation has already come in spite the flaws and failings If the fruits of a righteous life are not present in you (and to be clear financial prosperity is not such a fruit) then your life is not so righteous and you need to reassess how you live. Your own identity matters not. It's his identity that is important. Do you know him? If you do you realise how unimportant you are. God bless .

Reparations…I don’t follow.. Like money? I guess I don’t understand who would, physically, be the person or persons to receive money, as well as from whom are they receiving it, on what specific basis, or what specific amount. ? Probably a better idea (as well as more loving) would be to give the Gospel rather than money, which is here today and gone tomorrow, yes? Similar to how Christians from nations such as Zambia, Iran, Uganda, & China need to come here to America (and to Canada as well) to proclaim the Gospel to a spiritually dead nation.
@veggiet2009 Жыл бұрын
@@patrickc3419 the gospel is super important yes, and who to give reparations to is a hard question to answer. But those two concepts are not against each other. You can give someone the gospel and seek to right wrongs

The gospel had to be followed by actions. Absolutely agree with the reparations. Wealthy countries gained their wealth by exploiting those countries we call today "third world countries" or the "global south." That's the Christian thing to do but, they're not really Christian countries are they?

The reason Romney lost and Trump won was that Romney ran against a generational talent in Obama who also had the major advantage of incumbency. Trump ran against what would of been the first woman President who is married to a former President who left office 16 years prior. People just didn’t like Hillary. It’s also hard for the same party to hold the office of President for 3 terms. I believe Romney would have won the popular vote in 2016.
@andrewduff2048 Жыл бұрын
2016 was a fluke. Third parties won a lot of votes too. Trump was able to attract non-voters and the possibility of him winning wasn’t taken as seriously as it should have been for any nominee of the two parties so the fear of Trump in 2016 was way lower than it was in 2020 or will be in 2024.
@Justanotherconsumer Жыл бұрын
That Trump’s campaign was rooted in racism (birtherism and Obama “not a real American”) and that sexism meant Clinton had an uphill battle likely had strong effects on turnout of a very specific type of voter. Effective smear campaigns meant poor turnout for Dems too, as did overconfidence. Romney wasn’t going to motivate the people the GOP has become - as a Mormon he’s already at a disadvantage n the identity politics that dominate the GOP.

I wonder what Skye will say if he happens to meet some of the British RF in heaven? I get that for the majority it’s more a cultural Christian symbolism with the coronation, but I’d like to believe that there might be people who do believe in Jesus and salvation. After all who are we to judge everyone? We make mistakes also. The RF did not ask for this production it’s life in a fish bowl like Skye said and they bring in tourism. The least we all could do is not be judgey and maybe pray for them? I mean we pray for all sorts of people! I felt sorry for Charles and all the expectation of him and the vitriol on social media. The whole nonsense of diversity for the sake of diversity in the social media feed was horrible. Harry could have left and kept his mouth shut! He is irrelevant apart from being the son of a monarch. They are only a constitutional monarchy but we really ought to be a little kinder to them.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I find Skye’s almost profane loathing of the RF really off-putting. He sounded mean and hateful. I am seriously thinking of ending my subscription to this channel mainly on account of the biting sarcasm and lack of kindness that Skye regularly dishes out.
@sherenejoseph Жыл бұрын
@@Str20ng He is sarcastic a lot, and sometimes it's frustrating. I take a break every now and then:) I have appreciated podcasts the last few years, but one thing I have taken away from ALL podcasts is that it is super easy to sit in our chair and judge others, but it's very hard to walk the walk. I would love to find out if everyone on the podcast has a diverse group of friends and community, not just diversity in the teachers/ preachers/authors they interview. I am sure Kaitlyn does because she is much younger and is still at school. I do really, really like all the hosts. They seem like genuinely good people who are willing to learn, be open, and grow, but today's sarcasm on the RF was a little biting. As a person of Indian origin, I was raised by a grandmother who lived during QE2's reign. The colonial heritage runs strong in my generation of Indians, and India has nearly 1000 years of history when compared to the US. I agree that RF is human, makes mistakes, and is flawed like every other human on the planet. But we ought to be careful judging others. We do not know who they are inside their hearts, and last week on Patreon, in the segment Christian Asks - on whether non -Christians go to heaven - Skye had a much better-nuanced response. Today was disappointing.

Folks, it's time to scale back the "American political scene" content. It's the same thing week after week, maybe with a new detail to kick off the topic. But it's the same narrative each time. System is broken, hypocritical Christian nationalists on one side, other side is very extreme, etc. etc. etc. Turn the entire discussion section into the "News of the Good" segment you had. We can assume all the bad news, but highlight how churches across the nation are doing good stuff to deal with problems. There are churches caring for the elderly, building tiny home communities for homeless, supporting single mothers, helping rehabilitate people from addictions, etc etc etc. Can we discuss issues big stories in Christian culture like the Josh Butler story? Of course. But do we need another 20+ minutes talking about the political Right and Left? It's getting redundant at this point.
