Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #572
While headed to check out some land art in an exceptionally desolate part of Utah, I stumbled on more interesting stuff along the way...including a ghost town and a marker for some guy who rode his bicycle cross-country in 1903. This is my new favorite part of the country...it's FULL of weird stuff!

Hi Huss, love your videos. George A. Wyman was the first person to cross the U.S on a motor vehicle. He attached a 1.5 HP gasoline engine to a standard pedal bicycle, and drove it (rode it?) from San Francisco to NYC in 51 days in 1903. He rode on railroad tracks for most of the journey. As he neared the end, his engine conked out, and he had to pedal the last 150 miles. He finished 20 days before the first 4 wheel automobile transcontinental trip was completed.

@@CarportCarl Actually common. Steel track was very costly back in those days so lesser used areas it got moved to where it was needed for more traffic areas. And as RRs got in financial trouble they often scavenged for repairs on other lines rather than purchase as they were broke.

@@CarportCarl Really depends on location and needs. Some leave them in place for future salvage also. Mostly based on finances but rare to see them totally abandoned as they are really high grade steel. Excellent for anvils and tool steel. Those wheels beating on them over the years make them harder still. Kind of like hammers beating them for years.

@@CarportCarl Yes. There have been times when they have completely removed abandoned tracks, other times they have just abandoned the tracks in place. The old SP (originally it was Pacific Electric) West Santa Ana Branch from Santa Ana, thru Stanton, thru Bellflower to Paramount (in California) where they're building the new Orange County Street Car all that track was removed. The part from Stanton to Santa Ana was removed in 1977 and the part from Stanton to Paramount, I'm not sure, but, there were parts where the track was abandoned in place, and other parts where the track was torn out.

Nancy Holt's Sun Tunnels (1973-76) is located in the Great Basin Desert in northwestern Utah. Composed of four concrete cylinders that are 18 feet in length and 9 feet in diameter, Sun Tunnels is arranged in an open cross format and aligned to frame the sun on the horizon during the summer and winter solstices.

The first person to bicycle across the US was Thomas Stevens in 1884 on a penny farthing (the old fashioned bike with a big tire in front). It took him 103 days to ride from San Francisco to Boston, there he boarded a ship to London and continued to ride across Europe and Asia. He returned to San Francisco in 1887 on a ship from Japan which makes him the first person to circle the globe by bicycle.

Evidently, I'm the millionth viewer who felt compelled to inform WH that he rode a motorcycle. The way we scrutinize every detail in her videos is both good and bad. It's good that we are attentive her content. It can get a bit pedantic in a negative way when we point such things out that it becomes criticism. I wonder how many viewers were "Laugh In" ?

It looks like an early take on what would become the Whizzer which started in the 40's... As for an I-80 route option; US 80 was designated on November 11, 1926, along with the rest of the U.S. Routes. The asphalt road was constructed through the valley as the main east-west route, and was open by 1927. Another road was constructed in the early 1930s, to remove curves and widen the lanes. Hogan's Heros Sgt Shultz?!?!

I don't understand it, Wonderhussy isn't that old to remember Rowin & Martin comedy. Maybe her mom saved some old tapes from the show, but VHS wasn't invented then, I don't think. I can remember watching it and having a school skit on the show back in the 70s. I don't consider myself to be old though, just lived a full life.

Undoubtedly the biggest event of the year for the company was George Wyman's success in crossing the continent on his California motorcycle. The publicity generated by this event was huge: not only did it consume pages of the specialist press (for example The Motorcycle Magazine and The Bicycling World and Motocycle Review both carried extensive reports over several issues), but the event captured good coverage in newspapers of the day

Nope. 1902 California Motor Company Motorized Bicycle. The "moto-cycle," or "motorcycle" then was considered a novelty, a play toy for young men and boys, and not realistic as a mode of transportation.

My favorite part of the sun tunnels was that the sun shone through them, casting a white shadow constellation inside the tunnel. I am guessing the constellation on each is appropriate for the season. I am grateful for your thorough critique of this work of art because I didn't get it at first glance. You do have an "artist's soul," and show someone can be smart, sensitiver, and sexy at the same time.

Great thumbnail composition. I think that that was Arte Johnson who played a German WWII soldier on 'Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in.' He made funny one-liner quips with a hilarious German accent. Good job on the recall, Wonderhussy. Equally as funny. Those steps aren't indicative of a building once being there. They are symbolic of the need to "step up in life," but know your limits. I mean, otherwise you'll fall off the top step that has no further purpose. Followed by the warning of the "potholes" you'll encounter along the way. Meaning of life stuff. And those pipes. They are not just "pipes." They are symbolic of a narrow mind with occasional portals representing the self-justified, which is actually self-preservation, subscription to the deception of being able to look out at life in real time, from inside the Armour of the narrow mind as one maintains a narrowly defined path through life. You should make a sign of your own and post it for good ol George. "Hey! George A. Why man? First to cross America on a bike? WTF? Concrete Stonehenge. Only in America. Boy, oh boy am I chortling. Why, I'm CMAO. I'm actually COL. If an alien landed there post apocalypse he would be disappointed. If he was a Reptilian, that is. I mean, He would chew out his wife for not bringing his Acme Super Size Prober. I mean, after all. How is he supposed to probe those with what she packed? As far as wondering their purpose. He would probably think that we were giants and those were our flutes. And that would cause him to become even more depressed knowing that he missed another opportunity to probe giants. Then his wife would unload on him. "You're such a loser. Always late for an apocalypse and a dollar short for a probing. Aren't you!?" Which brings me great pleasure knowing that these two are stuck in a mini UFO traversing the Milky Way causing each other unbearable misery. I mean, Operation Blue Book determined that 100% of all UFO crashes on planet earth were the result of Reptilian domestic violence. Yay. Relative to this somewhat chronological commentary. I am now speechless. The only thing that comes to mind is 'what fun.' Hit and run Wonderhussy antics win me over once again. I mean, screw the boring Mounds Bars. [lowers shades then lifts brim of hat] I want the candy with the "nut" in it. If I was to visit those pipes in the middle of nowhere. I seriously doubt that I, Nowhere Man, would have so much fun. I mean, I would drive up and say to myself, "Something looks like it doesn't belong here. It's not the cow pies. Oh well. I wonder what those pipes are here for. Maybe it's the fresh cow pies where there are no cows. Yeah, That's got to be it." Then zoom off into another vanishing point. Boring. Another great installment from Wonderhussy!

I enjoy many of your videos. Just want to add some history on Tecoma it was created as a stop during construction of the transcontinental railroad in late 1868 or early 1869 and rapidly became a place of importance because of its close proximity to the mines at Buel Nevada 6 or 7 miles southeast. Colonel David Buel of Austin Nevada fame purchased the Tecoma mine for $125,000 and constructed a $40,000 smelter that shipped bullion from Tecoma. A stage line ran between the 2 places twice a day. In the early 1870s it had a fine hotel. Tecoma was also a shipping point for the Harrell & Sparks ranching operation one of the largest privately owned ranches in the U.S. it covered parts of Utah, Idaho but most it was in northeastern Nevada. Jasper Harrell started with a herd of about 4 or 5 thousand longhorns that he trailed up from Texas in the 1870s, in 1882 he shipped a $120,000 worth of beef. John Sparks who eventually became his partner served as governor of Nevada from 1903-1908 and Sparks Nevada is named after him. There was a Chinese population here, one of the business owners was called China Jim and a pass on Pilot Mt. to the south is named after him.

From Wikipedia: "George Adams Wyman (July 3, 1877 - November 15, 1959) was the first person to make a transcontinental crossing of the United States by motor vehicle. In 1903, Wyman rode his 1902 California Motor Company motor bicycle from San Francisco to New York City in 51 days, finishing 20 days before Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, the first person to cross the continent by automobile."

That was back when motorcycles were essentially bicycles with motors cobbled to them.

I kind of wonder what the fastest is going across on a motorcycle is in 2021, without getting caught at higher speeds disregarding the limits.

@@brianlanders5306 - The current Cannonball Run record, NYC to LA, on a motorcycle is 37 hours, 7 minutes set by Adam Frasca in 2015. That's slightly longer than the car record (25:39) because of more frequent fuel stops and snow in the Rockies.

Probably Utah funded, tunnels catching the sun rise of the 4 seasons and probably also has a midnight consolation alignment on the same days, would be useful for setting a watch before the electronic age. For the most part they are large sewer pipes with some calculations for position and hole placement.

Exactly, I doubt those were tire marks, those were diagrams penciled out to know where to drill the holes is my estimation. It wasn't only art, it was math and science also.
