Also, I was in the exact same position a few years back when I was natural and straightened my hair a second time. My hair wouldn't revert along the perimeter but the crown was fine. I did exactly what this viewer did and looked for answers on YT and went and bought aphogee 2 step. It did nothing to my hair. Luckily for me, my impatience kicked in and said "girl you're a broke graduate student if this didn't work now it's probably not going to work" and I chopped my hair off the next day. Again, luckily I've never been attached to my hair so if something goes awry I do not mind cutting it bc its hair, it will always grow back! Save for extreme circumstances. 😊

I've come to realize that many people especially people on here like *instant gratification*. They want long hair, healthy hair, defined curls, straighter press outs, less frizz, etc. but they don't want to take the time to understand or put in the work to get what they desire. That's why I stopped my Cosmetology 101 series. Everyone wants secrets, tricks, gimmicks, and 1-2-3 step methods to stronger, longer, healthy hair instead of taking the time to learn, understand, and accept their hair for what it is. You are right, they don't want the truth; They want the fantasy that everyone else is giving them. I'll be surprised if I hit the 100K mark honestly lol

AfrikanHairGod well if and when you do, I'll be right here to soak it all in! And as a person who always ping pongs with relaxed and natural hair, I can understand how the women see some of these youtubers with gorgeous hair who are telling them to "put caffeine on your hair" or "rinse your hair with dirty water" would be easily convinced that "if it works for her it can work for me" --totally disregarding the fact that we do not have the same hair! I've been there! And at the end of the day, it's exactly like you said, you have to learn to love your hair and if you don't then maybe being natural isn't for you. It's not an easy journey for anybody, same with losing weight, or making any other drastic life change...journeys require patience. There aren't any short cuts (no pun intended) lmbooooo

AfrikanHairGod I really liked the Cosmetology 101 series. I'm kind of new to natural hair and the information was greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I look forward to all of your videos and shared your channel with my friends. I never understood people obsessed with length of hair instead of health of hair. Relaxed or natural, hair grows at its own pace. I am actually enjoying my 'fro as much or more than I enjoyed hair down my back!

I used the Aphogee 2 step a few years ago, totally destroyed my hair and it started coming out. I told the person who told me I needed it and she said I didn't know how to use it lol. I knew I wasn't crazy, it was probably protein overload. I ended up big chopping 8 months ago and have seen more hair growth in that time period than I had years before that. This is excellent information! I have vowed to spend an hour a day learning about upkeep on natural hair so that I can prevent disasters going forward. This channel has helped me a lot!

I think she should cut it. It's only been a year and her hair was damaged down to the root. I don't think her hair is really shined out. I think it's more breakage thinning out the appearance of her hair. Heat damage doesn't affect your follicles so she's still good. She just needs to start from square one, but it will be worth it.

Also, Ive tried protein like 2 years ago, cause some naturals on YT were saying it was helpful, blah blah blah. My hair was so dry, brittle felt like straw. Never did it again. I feel sad for the girl. But, I believe once she cuts it and stay away from heat and protein her hair would flourish and grow back.

I used to use the Aphogee 2 step protein treatment every 6 weeks, then I started using the 2 min reconstructor every other week, or the Green Beauty Real Protein mixed with a regular conditioner every other week. I assumed that my hair was thinning because I started braiding it opposed to twisting it and I thought the braids were causing stress, now thanks to you I see exactly what the issue is.

I've been struggling with my hair since my setback back in December of 2015 when I went to a hair salon that claimed to "specialize" in natural hair and I left with really straight hair and two weeks later never completely reverted back to my original texture. I trimmed sporadically throughout 2016, got a few protective styles along the way, big chopped fully and then got a curly hair cut last month, but the front of my hair is still lacking elasticity and is still frizzy. Thank you for all the knowledge, I will def be using all of your tips!!!❤

It was very nice of you to get permission and share your advice with all of us. I think I shared before that I have used aphrogee 2-step one time, and that was when I decided to switch from flat ironing/pressing to no heat styling. I was lucky and didn't have any problems with protein overload, but I don't think that its a good idea for everyone to use it. Especially new naturals who have been relaxed most of their lives. It's difficult to know if something is helping or harming your natural hair if you don't have a good idea of what your healthy natural hair really is like. Please keep doing this vids, because you are doing a great service to your viewers. In addition, you give us lots of laughs when its time for the water jug. lol

Well, I had heat/chemical damage on some of the front of my hair from perm and flat iron usage before going natural 7 months ago. I didn't big chop. I simply cut the damaged hair off every few months (not to confuse this with my bi-yearly trims). I'm almost down to my new growth. But, like he said: if you're not even seeing new growth and used that much protein, big chopping is likely the most beneficial route to take.

Great video Narada. Ultimately folks need to realize that sometimes it's best to seek out and go see a professional. As for me I'm going to see a dermatologist first to address specific issues I'm having with my scalp. Once I get that medical advise I can then seek out a true professional hairstylist like yourself and Henni to assist me in maintaining my natural hair. I've also learned that if I choose to straighten or color my hair I have to accept the fact that I may experience some damage and either live with it or do what it takes to bring my hair back to it's natural state.
@TheEagleslover8 жыл бұрын
Update: I confirmed what I already knew. I am suffering from a form of Alopecia. I was hesitant to post my diagnosis because I've see some of these so called "quick fix with my homemade remedy" videos dealing with this subject and I just cringe. That would be a great topic for you and Henni to address. I will probably cut my hair off while I undergo some non-invasive treatments. It's just hair and with proper care and realistic expectations I'll be fine. I'll call and schedule an appt for the cut.
@AfrikanHairGod8 жыл бұрын
TheEagleslover forms of alopecia is a subject that I am not extensively knowledgeable on. Henny and I do have a few clients that have experienced and are experiencing different forms of alopecia. We are currently studying and experimenting on different ways to treat these issues. We have made some progress with just about all of our clients but as you know, these things take a lot of time to see results. If you are able to come and see us, please do. If not we'll continue to do our research and hopefully gain a better perspective on this topic.

hmmmm. Now that you mention it, i need protien because my hair is soft to begin with not because it is porus.(i dont have as much protien bonds as others naturally). My hair is really soft, fine texture, with high density. with a thight wave that isnt quite 4c. i say wave because it does not make a circle. My mother and grandma's hair feels stronger. I use hair strengthening conditioners that have just a smidge of protein (below the middle of the ingredients list). this helps my hair keep its shape. My mom and grandma who also have porous hair (thats where i got mine from) dont like it. Saying it makes their hair too tight. The deep conditioners they use make my hair too mushy. i know my hair is over moistuerized when it comes out poofy. 100% not damp and my hair is too soft to hold a shape/style. So you're right, porosity has nothing to do with it.

If you hair is natural not bleached or frequently heat styles you probably don't need a protein treatment. Me on the other hand I use bleach so for the first 3 months I will use aphogee to restore my hairs elasticity. After that just regular deep conditioners and my hair is still retaining length.

Hi Narada. From my understanding, the KZbin community makes high porosity look like it has more "holes" in the cuticle and hair strand, making it weaker. In that logic, the protein is suppose to fill in the holes that is in the high porosity hair, making it stronger and more elasitc because there isn't as many holes. Going from that, low porosity hair is more whole in nature with nearly no holes in the cuticles and hair strand. For the most part, the hair doesn't need the protein to fill in. Think of it as a brick Wall with a lot of missing bricks for high porosity hair. The wall isn't stable, prone to fall (breaking in hair sense) in it and the cement as the protien. The cement will fill in the holes of the wall. making it whole again? and low porosity hair is like a whole brick wall with maybe one or two bricks missing, if that. It wouldnt make sense to put extra cement on/in the wall because it is already whole. I hope that makes sense and loved the video. :)

@tarynruffin22108 жыл бұрын
In the video you ask for someone to explain the theory why porosity relates using protein. I'm no pro. lol I'm probably a pro a watching videos tho lol. Well I've seen it explained: high porosity has raised cuticles. People may have this naturally (like me)or caused by damage. The inner cortex is thin and exposed. Since the raised cuticles don't lay flat like other hair types, it's breaks easier. Then the plan is to add protein to thicken and patch areas. Then super hydrate to keep it from getting brittle.all in all getting stronger moisturized hair. What do you think tho? Does this make sense?
@AfrikanHairGod8 жыл бұрын
Taryn Ruffin thank you for chiming in on that topic... You are the only one that I've seen on this video to do so. That's pretty much the only explanation that I've heard before... Honestly, I'm not trichologist, and the only way I could test that theory is with research and a microscope... So that could in fact be true. But to me, that means the protein would function similarly like oils do except penetrating into the cortex by helping to temporarily normalize the hair's porosity. I do believe that THAT is true but the hard protein treatments aren't necessary in most cases for that. You can get that from the protein in your diet and in the reconstructors. I believe the hard protein treatment can be excessive at times and do more harm than good and make your dryness and breakage problems worse. I believe a lil at a time will work best and take you a long way... I've seen too many ppl fall victim to the protein treatments... That's why I'm so assertive and adamantly against it.

Yes. I experienced this. But to a lesser degrees. My hair was and is very tightly coiled. I also straightened my hair, myself (1st mistake) at right at 1year mark for growing my hair out. (I've always been natural) ohhh might I add, I also did "Texlax" my hair once before I straighten it too. I had very little change from the texlaxing. Made my hair just a little more manageable. Still very coily. Anyways once I straighten my hair, it was like a new set of hair. It was Damaged on some ends. But even the part that was straight, was my the same. It was just different. I also tried protein etc. Anyways. I gradually cut it off over time. and my hair has never been more healthy. Look Me up on IG for proof. DRobRN ALSO. yes I have used heat again on my hair. More than once. Maybe 2-3 times a year. I no longer use a flat iron myself. I will blow it out myself. I've not experienced any significant heat Damage. I go to someone I trust to use heat on my hair. And get my ends trimmed in the process. Any heat damage I've had since then may be in one or two small places at the ends. 1-3 inches. It's mild. But because I know my hair, I can notice it and I don't get it every time. Come to think of it, I hadn't had any the last 2-3 times I got it straightened. I say that to say, don't be afraid to use heat in the future. Just be careful and it is what it is! It's only hair!!!!

19:24 why do I feel like you're talking to me? 😒😂 I'm high porosity idk how to explain it, all I know is that when I use a protein reconstructor on a regular basis, my hair is stronger, holds moisture better, and curls more. Before I used a protein reconstructor, my hair was soft, weak, and frizzy and it dried out a lot faster. As I'm typing this I'm listening to your video and am hearing you basically explain this so I probably typed all this for nothing but I'm not deleting it. 😂
@AfrikanHairGod8 жыл бұрын
gigglyfitzgirl no I wasn't speaking to anyone specifically. Everything is about learning for what works for your hair. If that works and you see no issues with it,then i don't either. There's countless factors that tie into need and use for protein and its impossible to list them all out in a video. You have learned your hair and that's what's important.

Hay, ABOUT MY HAIR. I just want to say that any damage on my scalp or HAIR will slow or will stop my hair growth. Example: When I don't trim my ends when needed, it slows my hair growth down and also when I do trim the dead ends my hair seem to need a week to adjust. Example: When I get a thinning spot, because of some product, and the thinning spot is larger than a half dollar size that will STOP my hair growth but if it is less then a quarter size, sometimes it slows it down or sometimes not.

Brownmahfun When your ends are damaged and you don't trim, your hair growth is not slowing down or stopping. Your hair is just breaking off faster than it's growing so you don't see the length you should have.

All these so called natural hair guru's on here and you are the first to actually discuss disulfide bonds. I don't understand why more people giving advice on natural hair care don't take a few minutes to research hair chemistry and anatomy.

Nanase B. True, he is only the second person I hear talking about disulphide bonds, the first person was my hairdresser in 1997 when I lived in the islands!
