I'm sitting in Jan 2021 having lived in Australia for close to ,50 years now. My dad, a Whitechapel bell hanger, one of the last jobs he did in 1971 was hanging the new 10, at the Abbey.along with other bell hangers I knew. Such a long time ago now, I so wish I could talk to my dad but he has past on. Such is life

Note the difference between English change ringing and European ringing. In Europe bell ringing is random in that the bells follow no sequencial pattern, in fact the bells clash with one another, also most bells are rung with electric motors. In Britain bells are manually rung and bells swing through full circle zllowing bells to be controlled and moved in orderly sequence. At Westminster Abbey there are 10 bells hence 10 ringers. Ever sequence is different and is based on mathematical algorithms. Tns type of ring has been going on in Britain since the early 1600s. This type of ringing exists in other countries to but is less common. Ireland, North America Canada, Australia and New Zealand all have English change ringing

steven rowe Well, here in Italy, there are many different “bell ringing” methods (approximately one/two for each region); quite a lot of them are “random”, but in some of them there is a precise coordination between the swinging bells in order to create perfect (and traditional) sequences, like the British ones 😊

I know that in Verona they call sequential changes., Also know that English change ringing has been performed on Italian bells. They also ring them hand and vack stroke but of course unlike the UK there is no sallys on the ropes.

In France we have basicaly a mix of change ringing... And european ringing, We call it ''Volée tournante'' , it basicaly consit in making the bell do a 360° turn but there's no order at all , it IS used in southern and center regions of france

the method they were ringing is called 'stedman caters' stedman is the name of the method and caters is the amount of bells they were ringing the method on (caters = 9 bells). the deepest pitched bell, the tenor, which goes bong at the end doesn't get counted for caters methods. if the tenor was part of the method, going off of the back, the method would become a 'royal' method (royal = 10 bells). because westminster abbey is the royal church (the one used by the queen / king), it becomes apparent why westminster abbey has 10 bells.

I traveled to London for the first time and heard the bells of Westminster Abbey for the first time on this day. Since I went without learning anything, I thought on that day that the bell would ring every day, but when I looked into it after returning to Japan, I realized that it was a special day. . It isnt Grandsire or maximus. There are 10 bells at Westminster not 12,you need 12 for maximus . This is caters 9 bells plus the tenor behind. This is Stedman caters.

English church bell are hung differently from almost anywhere else, they are hung upright with the bell at the top, whilst elsewhere the bell hangs down. This has a big impact on how the bells sound and how they are wrung.

They are aren't chimes. With chimes the bells are hit by an external hammer and the bell doesn't move. These are bells are ringing, ie they swing through 360 degrees which means you can change the position of the bells Each change is different than the previous change Each bell can either stay in the same place or move one position either up or down on every change. This method is called Stedman Caters. Only 9 bells are changing position. The tenor which is the heaviest bell remains in 10 position all the time. Thank you for your comment. The camera used to shoot this video is a model called "iVIS HF G20" made by the Japanese manufacturer "Canon". This model was sold in Japan, but I don't know if it was exported overseas. It was a little more expensive than other cameras, but it was a product that could be purchased at a regular electronics store. It's now a fairly old camera, so if you shoot it with the latest 4K camera, you should be able to shoot videos with even better image quality.
