This ‘Smart Giant’ seaport, which has been constructed over the past three years and now offers seven large deep-water berths, becomes the world’s largest automated container terminal. 5G isn’t what I want. I would love to at least get GPRS in the Tube. I think 5G is a stretch when we don’t even have 2G there. Every metro in major city in Asia have 4G signals especially the ones in ex British colonies like Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Losing signal due to going underground hasn’t been a thing since the 1990s for those ex-colonies, You’d think the capital of the British empire would’ve at least be on par in this regard. 🤪

@@gavinnorthants yeah I was being somewhat sarcastic. I believe the Hong Kong MTR company has been handed the contract to manage the London Underground a couple years back or at least part of it. Haven’t heard anything on the news on this in a while but I remember my reaction on this was, nice now we are finally going to see modernisation. Not sure what’s the status but HK MTR is one of the best metros in the world. It’s probably 5G since most 5G deployments as I understand it, are an add on to existing 4G antennas which is how China is able to deploy them so fast. The issue is Ericsson didn’t designs theirs like Huawei did so can’t just upgrade existing antennas. I do hope regardless of which vendor is used, mid band is being deployed instead of mmWave. I rather have consistency of signal than inconsistent ultra speeds. Mid band is what China did, I averaged speeds of 350-550mbits while in Shenzhen and never had signal issues above or underground while there. mmWave supposedly gives you 1200-1500mbits but you need direct line of sight to the base stations

@ginnox20492 жыл бұрын
If we look at South Korea and Swiss, they have a smaller landmass, and their cities aren't that big, population is much smaller too. So rolling out mmWave makes more sense and easier for this two and similar countries. It's much easier for them to cover the amount of spacexpopulation. In real life usage for a phone user, mmWave doesn't really give any advantage over the mid-range wave. Unless you are streaming video, downloading big files or playing heavy load games. But honestly, how often is that for a normal user? On the other hand, for construction machines that supports 5G as it is massively rolled out in China, having mmWave is much better, but the coverable area is much smaller too given the wavelength is much shorter, so you can only use mmWave at a closer distance to the signal tower, and it cost way too much to build many. So Even though in S.Korea and Swiss had build towers that supports mmWave, I doubt majority of users can benefit mmWave everywhere, given each tower are not build closely together. Maybe a little different in compact areas of the city. But economical wise, having 5G with mid to mm wave is definitely a benefit to the nations that had build it. Using S.Korea for example, video gaming is one of their mainstream businesses with competition held every year. Having 5G and mmWave, they can pretty much dump away the broadband and have competition host almost everywhere around the cities. That brings a lot of income, and it gives most businesses a more efficient linkage to the internet to get work/meetings done. So looking at this topic, US has really become a joke in many areas, and politically saying, sanctioning Huawei just because US had fell behind in this area is a stupid move. So instead of trying to play catch up, US and many western countries prefer playing Big Brother to threaten and suppress others who they see as a threat to their power. That's dumb and it's a given due to western history.

You did your test in Shanghai, which I believe is a fairly densely populated area. How is performance in more rural areas? I live in Canada and I don't believe any mmWave has been deployed here yet. The highest frequency my carrier provides is 3.5 GHz "C band". I have seen over 400 Mb down with that. The company I'm with has a few other bands where they're running 5G, the lowest being 600 MHz. Some of those bands are shared with 4G. And yes, when 5G is used on the same or similar bands as 4G, the service is a bit better, but nothing to write home about. It's only when you get into the mid bands where you see a significant increase Another thing to consider is 5G is about far more than just cell phones. The first three generations were mainly about phone use. With 4G, sometimes it was used for wireless Internet, often in backup for wired connections to businesses. On the other hand, 5G is aimed at much more than just phones. It's aimed at much more than even 4G, with things like vehicles, utilities and much, much more. It also has something called network slicing where virtual networks can share a physical one, providing connections for the various services, including quality of service (QoS) and more. In addition mmWave is often aimed has dense user areas, such as stadiums, transit hubs, etc.. So all these things may use a lot of the available bandwidth, so you'd wouldn't see it on your phone. I've had a 5G capable phone for just over 2 years, but 5G was available for some time before that.

Once you get away from the hype and look closely at the details a different picture emerges. Firstly, no one, not one single operator one any country is racing to keep up with China. Why? First of all is the business case. Where the west built 4G at breakneck speed there is no reason to build 5G at the same pace. Why? 4G is not yet maxed out, won't be for years and the use cases like URLLC require spefic coverage poi ts, not blanket coverage. We're doing that already. Second is power usage. 5G uses on average 3x what 4G does. That blows a business case apart. Third and lastly, the big one - deployment costs. 5G is on average anything up to 10 times more expensive to deploy. You need new fiber everywhere to support the 10Gb circuits you now need. I don't think it's the west who has slipped up here. It's more like China responded to a command from the CCP that will (and is) crippling the operators.

Are you sure? India rolled out 5G to 78 cities in a matter of months with home grown tech. India has set policy to beat China in 6G by being the global leader by 2029. The West is just sleeping. The level of innovation in the West has stagnated which is why the West doesn’t go beyond 4G. In the western countries where innovation is still not dead 5G is doing quite well - Switzerland.

One difference you failed to mention: there is currently NO unlimited 5G plan in China. You have to pay per data used in China.

I'm on Rogers, in Canada, and get unlimited data, though it's throttled after 70 GB.
