Solution to the problem according to T-Mobile: use low-band high-distance high-penetration radio waves in open countryside, then use milliwave transmission, which is blocked by as little as a crowd of people, in dense urban areas which are well-known for being clear of obstruction like buildings... and not constantly filled with... large... crowds. No, wait. That doesn't sound right... I still hold that milliwave 5G is DoA except for hyper-specific applications as a glorified wifi hotspot. You'll only get mmW 5G in small, clear places like stadiums, except that unlike wifi you still have to pay for it with your ISP and you still need to buy a compatible phone. And even so the backbone capacity will never be enough to give 800 Mbps to all those people. Also lol "it will even work indoors".

You just need lots of towers in densely populated areas. 5G range is like 300m max away from tower in very clear day while 4G can work at miles and even during rain. There is a danger of exposition with so many towers needed though. Millimeter Wave spectrum does sits between microwave and infrared waves. And those wave do interact with molecules, but luckily, 5G waves don't have much energy. But some experiment say close to towers increase chances of cancer in rats. It hasn't been tested long in humans. We are going to be experiments~ Well, it should be fine as long as they don't make intense infrared for more data or we'll cook near a tower lol.

I used to be 5G engineer, I specifically worked on mmWave 28 GHz. Just for clarification's sake mmWave does not equal 5G. mmWave is new spectrum to the cellular market that will be deployed under 5G standards. 5G is defined as the 5th generation of mobile technology that offers low latency and higher throughput regardless of the band (frequency) that it is operating on. Higher frequencies offer greater throughput with shorter distances and greater attenuation (signal degradation) which is why the mmWave is so hit or miss in the video. Lower frequencies, like the ones we are used to, do not attenuate as much when obstructions like foliage and buildings are in its path but their speeds aren't as promising as the high band mmWave. mmWave reflects or defracts off of nearly any object in its path. The general idea T-mobile is attempting to promote is that with low band and eventual mid-band channels available to their network (once the Sprint merger goes through) is that T-Mobile's 5G signal won't drop out the way the other carrier's signal did in the video (which I believe was Verizon) because they aren't planning on putting all their 5G eggs in the mmWave basket. Linus, when T-mobile reached out to you, did they offer you to test their recently deployed 600 MHz 5G? It was deployed about a week after you shot this video. It would have been nice to have a T-Mobile 5G phone and the other carrier's phone to compare/contrast results...

Scott M I think you mistake reality with what an ideal system would be. The rich are protected and served when they should be homeless and lose everything (GM for example), the government bails them out. True free economy means you do something stupid and you’re business goes under. The government says along the lines of “to stimulate the economy we’ll give money to the super rich” (which also means they can keep their prices at unaffordable levels at this time), and that might buy a yacht but not distribute the wealth like it clearly would giving to the poor helping everyone along the chain. Instead of providing job opportunities for the homeless (like Theodore Roosevelt did with the public works projects, offering not great jobs but liveable ones to veterans and such, roads and bridges were built, infrastructure repaired, highways allowing more trade and economic growth and potential, dams allowing more efficient and faster shipping paving the way for the US to become a global economic giant). Instead we have politicians giving billions to the billionaires that cheat employees. The government is quite blatantly corrupt and it’s not called bribery or extortion it’s called “political funding” or “lobbyists” (with a checkbook). Our government is not true capitalism, it’s more oppressively forced than that, where if you make billions like Amazon you may pay less in taxes than I do... Are you saying this system is not keeping the rich wealthy and ensuring this wealth distribution?

To be honest, if anything it increases competition. If you actually look at the studies, Sprint is dying regardless and the two at the top of the food chain are Verizon and AT&T who charge a shitload and bundle you in with DirectTV/Comcast. When T-Mobile takes over Sprint, they're coverage will be better than AT&T and they'll almost have the same consumer base. As well as significantly lower prices than both AT&T and Verizon, as per the buyout agreement which talks about T-Mobile being unable to raise their prices for years post buyout

If you recall in 2011 when ATT tried to buy TMobile, TMobile was arguing the same doom and gloom shit Sprint is...then look how that turned out when they blocked the merger. If these people running Sprint are running the company into the ground, then why don't they sell to literally anyone other than att, Verizon or TMobile.... literally anyone else could buy it and it would be fine for the consumer, but they want to consolidate with another company in their market. Hell sell it to dish network, because you're telling me dish network is going to be a Sprint like competitor in 3 years with only what amounts to TracFone and a bunch of 10 year old hoarded spectrum?...no, sell Sprint to dish network, then they can be a contender day 1.

For cellular service right now there is Verizon, T-mobile, Sprint, AT&T and US cellular for USA cellular networks. Now tell me with 4 companies being the only 4 for a country the size of the USA is reducing the amount of them good or bad for competition? In my mind we should have more than 4 for all of them but this is the USA and it is a pain to even start a cellular business. You have businesses that have agreements with one or more of the 4 big ones to have their cellular service be a thing. They are still dependent on one of those 4. It will be bad for capitalism. For capitalism to work you need competition and competition has been dieing in the USA lately. Having 1 less competitor will mean even less competition.

For now? Yes, in the future no. Telenor here in Norway give you 150mbps up and down, ping 30. Loss 0. There is 4 different ways the 5G will be delivered to your phone. They start by installing the very fast one, but then you have to go to the place that have it. That 5G gives you super high speed but it sucks when you have a ballon or a bird in the way. Then you have the low 5G, it will be just like 4G, then medium, and high. It will be delivered just like 4G is delivered I believe. So low maybe give you 150mbps when fully installed over the whole country, its only then they will they will start setup the more expensive and faster one, that will be the medium, and the high one will be last. So it can maybe 3 years before 5G full speed is out. Telia in Norway will have the high speed done by 2023, thats pretty long, but they will open for the low 5G in 2020.

I've been watching this channel for many years and this is the first time that You Linus got used so badly by a big corporation. What t-mobile showed In that presentation was basically the idea that 3G (UMTS) was promissing to offer even before 3gpp was thinking about really high througput (like 20 years ago), meaning that it's common knowledge in telecom business. What t-mobile didn't tell you is that 4G deployed on the same frequency band below mmWave spectrum (so like 700-5500MHz) will have at least 98% of the throughput that 5G will have on that same band. Why? Well that's because 4G radio encoding is already way above 90% frequency usage efficiency (assuming that 100% efficiency would be the the limit posed by the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem, and also excluding the guard band without which the networks wouldn't really work with neighboring bands). At the same time 5G radio encoding pushed this around 2% higher with new encoding techniques but in real life it's impossible to notice. Ok, so what's the difference between 4G and 5G? Well the most important one is that a so called "carrier" in 4G can be at maximum 20MHz wide. To use more bandwidth to communicate with a phone 4G has to use "carrier aggregation", and it can do that usually with 3x20MHz carriers, and the 3gpp standard allows for 5x20MHz carrier aggregation. When a telecom operator buys frequency, there is no way for a single operator to have bandwidth wider than that available at any location in the world basically. At least that was the case until mmWave bands were developed. What they allowed is to allocate bandwidth as wide as hudreds of MHz to a single telecom operator, and that's the only reason that 5G was developed. The difference is that 5G allows for carriers wider than 20MHz, to be specific it allows carriers 100MHz wide, and even wider in the future, and the 3gpp standard of 5g also supports carrier aggregation, and that's why 5G is so cool. The thing that t-mobile didn't tell you is that switching between mmWave 5G when available with huge throughput and LTE using some lower frequency with less bandwidth is the exactly same experience that you'll get with the t-mobile solution. The only difference is that in t-mobile deployment you will see the 5G icon more often, even though it will work with the same throughput as LTE + mmWave 5G can in the same scenario. So this video is basically blatant lies based on lack of technical knowledge (I sincerely hope that you didn't know Linus). One more important thing that t-mobile isn't telling is that enabling good 5G coverage using the lower frequency bands comes at a cost. That cost is that they are limiting the bandwidth available to their own LTE deployments, so in order to make the tech nerds happy with good 5G throughput and coverage they are piecing out their LTE deployment effectively making their LTE network slower. The only other way to do it is by getting more bandwidth, but that's all already sold and allocated to the telecom providers (which is why they were talking about the sprint merger, but still, getting decent 5G bandwidth in 2000-3000MHz frequencies is not possible without making the LTE deployment bottle necked by allocating it a much narrower bandwidth than it previously got. I understand that after buying all that equipment and realizing that it's not going to get any faster than LTE without more bandwidth the boffins at T-Mobile must've been really pissed, and that's most likely why they figured out this misinformation campaign to discredit other operators that actually invested in 5G where it has any benefits. I really hope that you either retract this misinforming video, collect some actual information on the subject, and prepare a rectification video, because I believe that this channel used to have a high standard of ethics in their content, but this video crushes that belief.

Right now it is easy to show awesome performance. Because we are only at 10% of capacity.

I think you forgot the more widespread use of 256QAM and 4x4 MiMo. I have a 5G device and on n1 with 20 MHz ch bw I reached around 430 Mbps down (525 Mbps should be possible there), the theoretical max. throughout of LTE B1 with 4x4 MiMo and 256QAM should be about 391 Mbps. The spectral efficiency of 5G should be _upto_ 50% higher, but of course it’s just theoretically so.
@AgneDei
@AgneDei 2 жыл бұрын
@ 256qam and 4x4 mimo is not widespread at all. Also you're comparing different coding and mimo configurations, not the LTE vs 5G radio protocols. 5G in an apples to apples comparison (same coding and mimo) is only 2-3% more efficient, no more. This is because LTE is already reaching around 95% peak theoretical bandwidth data throughput. Different coding and mimo configurations can also be used with LTE setups. Getting higher throughput from the same 20MHz band requires higher SNR, and the more complex coding is what takes advantage of that, not 5G - those are two different things. Mimo on the other hand is meant to increase the SNR, but it's effectiveness is usually very limited. The disadvantage is that higher SNR is available only at really short distance, meaning that it's not really useful besides wifi, as for mobile this will work only at line of sight benchmarking, which is not the general usecase for mobile.

lol. This was hilarious! Some of the looks you were getting were really funny, too! Haha! (Also, I'm so used to watching Louis Rossmann's videos that it didn't even dawn on me that YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE IN NEW YORK, YOU LIVE IN CANADA until, like, a fourth of the way through the vid! lol!)

Actually higher freq. penetrate objects better. The issue is the range drops quicker. Radios techs install UHF in factories or hotels with concrete or brick due to better reception that VHF.

I'm wondering what happens if we want faster speeds and just keep upping the frequency. How would we achieve that and not drop service from having any solid item in the vicinity?

There is nation wide 5G. Unfortunately there are two types of 5G, the standard which is a slightly improved 4G LTE, and 5G mmW which was displayed here. You can guess which is the less common.
