Great Video! One thing I did not understand is, when shooting on the full resolution does the horizontal filed of view also expand? Does the "normal" 16:9 4K comes from oversampling the full sensor, or croping in? Thanks!
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That’s a good question and I realise the way I demonstrated the extra resolution can confuse things, but it’s the same field of view (or extremely close) width-wise, but there are more pixels packed in to the 5K image and you gain FOV above and below the usual 16:9 window. You can crop in to those extra pixels to add zooms / pans / rotations while keeping a 4K resolution, or you can use the whole 5K image in a 16:9 format and have more pixels width-wise than 4K gives, and still get extra image above and below to tilt / reframe with. Hope that makes sense!
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
SporkStudio also yes, the GH5 4K mode is already over-sampled on the sensor.
@pdelinikolas5 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles Ah I see! Thanks for clarifying that! So it seems that all other 4K modes are indeed oversampled and not croped on the sensor, so it is not a pixel to pixel readout.
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
SporkStudio correct! In the video I said outputting the 5K video as 4K is sharper as it’d be oversampled- that’s assuming the bigger benefit comes with over-sampling in post rather than what the camera does.
@pdelinikolas5 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles I do not currently own a GH5 to test this, but I think it would be an interesting comparison to see if the oversampling done inside the camera (or in post) improves the image quality or not. You would have to shoot a normal 4K with a zoom lens and then shoot the same thing with the 5K mode but zoom out a bit so that when you crop to 4K pixel to pixel in post you see the same filed of view and can compare the overall sharpness and image quality. The reason I think this would be interesting is because even though camera manufacturers promote oversampling (as it is better for scaling down because you do not lose any light and filed of view from the sensor as with croping), TV specifications (EBU specs come to mind) ask that when you shoot something in true 4K (not UHD) and need to deliver to UHD, you should crop in and not scale down as a pixel to pixel copy is better than oversampling.

If you use 3:2 ratio for video you can record 5184x3456, that brings u a higher effective resolution for 16:9 material! 4:3 = 4992x3744 -> in 16:9 -> 4992x 2808 = 14.017.536 pixels 3:2 = 5184x3456 -> in 16:9 -> 5184x2916 = 15.116.544 pixels Easies way is to set 16:9 then you dont need to crop anything later you need to disable anamorphic mode , thats all ;)

For the past 1 year many great cameras have been introduced to the market and yet I feel my remarkable GH5 still beats all of them in overall bang for the buck and options. If Sony Alpha users had 5K option they would shove it down your throat every 5 seconds hahaha I actually have an anamorphic setup and if exposed correctly, the footage out of this camera is stunning. Having the 5K option is just the icing on the cake. That "Anamorphic desqueeze display" is such a huge help when shooting with a 2X anamorphic scope

Thanks for watching! Not sure I explained m the FOV very well (check out the pinned comment) but you’ll only gain FOV at the top and bottom of the usual 16:9 frame 👍🏻 Width-wise it’s the same as shooting 4K except for having more pixels packed in than 4K.
@AcuraAddicted5 жыл бұрын
Shot by Myles Yes, and thank you for your response! I got that I only gain top and bottom. This is still very useful to my application. See, due to a very crammed space in my vehicle I am very close to my camera when shooting my vids. So I have a very little pan/zoom room to play with when switching frames. I already downsize my vids to 1440p anyway, but that extra space on top and in the bottom will add on to the available pan room, which is especially useful when I need to reframe myself so my hand gestures can be seen. Again, I’m very glad I stumbled upon your video, as I didn’t know about this before. Thank you!

The thing I noticed with this technique is that when working on a 4k timeline in premiere, the 4k footage is actually sharper than the 6k downscaled version. This is probably due to the pixel mapping when scaling with an odd resolution. When working with the native resolution of the 6k files, while matching the frames exactly, I saw no discernible differences between the 4k version. So the biggest factor I see for using 6k would be for image flexibility rather an improved image quality. Tested this both on premiere and Fcpx.
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting, thanks for the feedback. If true that's frustrating that they aren't able to use the extra resolution for sharpness, wonder what the impact would be on noise though. Cheers

Great review of using 5k on the GH5! I'm not interested in extra pixels, I think what would swing me is image quality improvements with the utilization of h.265. The Samsung NX1 is still a beast of a camera 4 years later mainly because it uses h.265. I'd love to see or perform a test between 4K 10bit 4:22 150 mbps vs 5k 10 bit 422 200 mbps of pans, tilts, gimbal, and movement within statics (statics are not a good test for compression because codecs thrive with limited changes in the scene). Andrew Reid from EOSHD did a nice review of the 5k feature, but I'm still curious with scene changes and comparisons.
@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m probably not the man for that job- but it’s worth bearing in mind the 5K is 420 and not 422 if that matters to you. Resolution aside, I’d guess at the 4K mode because its 150Mbps is spread across less than half the pixels of the 5K’s 200Mbps. I know HEVC is more efficient but I’m not sure it bridges a gap that big.
@robjackson93645 жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles 5k is not 10 bit 422?! Son of a biscuit. 4k 10 bit 422 All-I, 150mbps, 1080 10 bit 422 All-I 60fps, and 100mbps are pretty impressive in themselves. Just picked up the BMPCC4k and I'll be interested in seeing the differences. Thanks for the reply!

@ShotByMyles5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Randy, I’ll bear that in mind! In case it helps, my workflow with it so far has been: 1. Correct white balance (if necessary). If on FCPX, avoid the white balance function if it impacts luma 2. Add the conversion LUT if using cine-D or HLG to convert to v-log 3. If shot is over-exposed (which is recommended for slow motion) bring down exposure to normal here. Skin tones and details should be below 70 IRE otherwise they could be lost in the LUT’s rolloff. I normally disable the conversion LUT in step 2 to judge that. 4. Apply GHAlex LUT 5. Adjust saturation / luma to taste. If skin tones are too pink I may adjust colour in mids or try adjusting white balance done in step 1.

hi, thank you for the great video. I am not a youtuber, but learn a lot here! What I am looking for is a way to use v log l with internal recording, because even in 400mbits the colors do artefact sometimes when I apply LUTS. the 200mbit 5K, because it is h265 and GOP, is way more efficient then a 400mbit all I, so in theory it would contain more data to play with despite being 4 2 0.

It's all about getting the best picture quality from your footage. 6K of course is better than 4K. But you do that by halving your bitrate. Bitrate is an equally important part of the equation, I believe. Are you actually getting sharper, cleaner footage using the anamorphic mode with a higher resolution, but lower bitrate?

Thanks Joe! It’s quiet round here now with Double Tree closed! I honestly haven’t done a huge HLG vs v-log test, I prefer v-log personally just because I know the monitor can display what the camera is capturing, whereas with HLG it isn’t able to. I also have a few LUTs that are designed for v-log, including filmconvert, so I have more options for grading with v-log. I know some people prefer HLG though (including Paul Leeming) and it will most probably work better in low light as far as noise goes!

Was supposed to add that i’ve shot round there and my stuff didn’t end up being nearly as good or creative haha. I do like vlog but in lowlight it really butchers a lot of colours

joe schofield haha thanks a lot! This is OTT honestly, just got carried away trying to make use of the extra pixels :) Agreed Log is not kind in low light! I use cine-d mainly in low light myself but some people do enjoy HLG!

@@ShotByMyles Ive not looked back to cine D since buying vlog. It took me a lot longer than i'm proud to admit that I was filming log and not converting it to 709 for a LONG time hahahah. I was just adding max contrast to the log footage and didn't consider using lumetri scopes. Since getting your lut my low light stuff looks loads better though! The ground control 709 lut i was using had this nasty green tint to everything

@@joescho I recommend Cine-D if you ever shoot 8 bit though (slow motion stuff for example) as Log can give you gross blotches of colour in 8 bit which isn't pretty if it happens on a face :) I actually don't mind v-log unconverted with a bunch of contrast / saturation! I tried it once and thought it looked alright!

Impressive! I still want to stick with canon for the auto focus and colors, but this camera is very tempting

It’s got a lot to offer and to explore, but anyone would miss those Canon colours! And if you rely on autofocus the GH5 is no match for dual pixel AF unfortunately

Great video! Dope intro. I just picked up a GH5 s. What an amazing bit of kit 🙏 gday from Melbourne

Gday indeed! Cheers Cameron, enjoy your new camera!

Keep in mind that the GH5S is "only" 4K Anamorphic/Photo, so you can do a 4K 4:3 Open gate, but not the full 6K 4:3 Open gate of the GH5

Marius Haugan ok! Thank you mate. Is that because the lower pixel due to the dual native ISO

@@camcamwatt correct. The S is a 12mpx sensor if I recall correctly

Marius Haugan yep 11. Something. So even in video mode it effects it. Interesting thanks again mate. 👌📸📽
