Is it weird that in some shots I actually prefer the "punchy-ness" of your cineD lut? The drummer looked better with ghalex, but many of the others (black haired lady, rooftop lady)... I don't know. Some shots with the ghalex look too washed out, contrast gets zapped, magenta cast, especially on outdoor shots.

Omg I just bought panasonic leica 12-60 on gh5 for the auto focus gimbal purpose and is it awful! Why I haven’t watched your video before 🥲
@ShotByMyles5 ай бұрын
sorry :( I really only ever had joy using manual focus on the GH5 for gimbal work, it is harder for sure, but I would recommend it: - shoot with a wider lens (i.e. 15mm or less maybe) - use a bigger f stop to get a deeper depth of field - use focus peaking and be aware of the difference in how it looks between nailed on focus, and just out of focus (when it can trick you in to thinking it's in focus) - work out how big your depth of field is so that you keep your subject in focus (i.e. within that distance) throughout the clip - I know it's simple, but remember the closer your subject, the less focus depth you have so you have to be very consistent with how close you are. Good luck!

What is ideal length of each shot?
@ShotByMyles6 ай бұрын
Do you mean focal length? Personally I’m working with small rooms and trying to make them look decent, so I use approx 16mm on full frame. Some people think it looks stretched or distorted, and a 24mm might be more true to life for them.

You nailed it! I bought one recently and it ruined my catwalk footage because of focus pulsing and not attaining focus quickly. My stage was more complicated though, having more than one subjects at times, zooming was required, and the light was uneven and somewhat low. The camera failed to keep the focus even after attaining it, and suffered focus pulsing caused by a slight face movement by the subject despite having focus attained on the face a second ago, the subject kept looking at the cam and just moved the head 10-20 degree. Thanks for pointing out that it's not recommended for a wedding type of event. Will try your recommendations, thank you!
@ShotByMyles7 ай бұрын
Oh man that sounds like a nightmare scenario for autofocus on this camera!! It just can’t be relied upon 🙃 I have a wedding shooter friend who got extremely good with manual focusing though and honestly that’s a life skill worth developing for video people… good luck!

@ShotByMyles11 ай бұрын
Cheers! Absolutely, zooming in in post is a bit of a crutch I use if the shot feels boring, but in real estate (especially here) people are obsessed about making the space look as big as possible, so I wouldn’t zoom or crop if there’s a chance I make some important space seem smaller 👍🏻

Very good video, concise and to the point. Now, another 3 years later, I would like to jump on the G9 wagon. I am a hybrid shooter. I am just worried about the autofocus in video… Hated using focus peaking on my M50 when trying out manual focus, because I could barely see anything. Do you think the EM1-ii might be a better choice for me?
@ShotByMyles11 ай бұрын
Thank you! The G9 AF is not good, honestly! I don’t have any experience if the EM1 I’m afraid, I’d look in to that or hire it before deciding to buy, but iirc it’s from the same era as the GH5 / G9 and has similar tech, so I’d be sceptical about its AF. All the best!

@@ShotByMyles Thanks a lot! Yeah, I really would like to love the G9 but it’s a bit of a mess with its AF… The EM1-ii has a hybrid AF, which is much better! I really like this video that another KZbinr made, shot on the Olympus: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6Cul52ZmN9lp8Usi=DN894q-hMVtTYPuc

DUDE you just gave me advice on my japan trip in your last video and convinced me as to why Cine-D would edge Natural profile for Dynamic range and also allow me to mess with some color correcting. But then I see this video and thought OMG I have been using White In reverys profile for years as a hobbyist and thought it was YELLOW looking! And this whole time you had a fix these last 4 years LOL. I haven't tried them but it makes me feel more comfortable knowing that you have a LUT fix to skin tones on White In Reverys Natural settings and for Cine-D if I decide to experiment with that. I only use Davinici Resolve at the moment but hopefully that's not a problem down the road as far as utilizing your LUT. I was going to ask you what your thoughts were on the GHAlex Luts but then you made a video about that as well! I'm just getting back into shooting with my camera because of my Japan trip and your channel has given me a lot of answers and flexibility with how to use my GH5! I'm also confident enough to shoot knowing that as long as I have proper exposure and white balance I can fall back on your LUTS (or GHAlex). I appreciate it alot! Lastly, I noticed you havent made much content for your channel since 3+ years now. I was curious as to what camera youre using today. Can't say thanks enough for all the tips/lessons.
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
Cheers! So yeah this answers your questions on why I don’t like the skin on cine-D even if it has more dynamic range than natural, the colour itself comes out a bit dead and ‘not creamy’. You could try the LUT out to correct that on the given settings, and yes that’d also work fine in Resolve 👍🏻 These days I’m shooting on the Canon C70 and the R6 as a B Cam, although I’ve still got love for Panasonic! At least you know the GH5 won’t overheat, the R6 does 😅 Enjoy Japan!

Im heading to Japan for 2 weeks and was curious what your thoughts on shooting VLOG vs Nat vs CineD. Note that I'm in no way a colorist, I'm an assistant editor as a daily job but I shoot only as a hobbyist, and I have yet to purchase V-LOG but want the most out of my camera. With that said I had a few questions. 1. If I bought V-LOG I plan to shoot 4k24 10bit and 4k60 8bit in Natural. Am i asking for trouble to match them in post? 2. Is VLOG really bad in 8 bit for color and in low light? I've read people say that about both. I've seen people comment not to use VLOG in 8bit ever but I've also seen some pretty nice footage graded at 8bit so it's kind of hard to decide. 3. If I were to shoot Cine-D I hear people say this is the best of both worlds of natural and vlog. You can color a bit after the fact and looks pretty good in lowlight and in both 8bit/10bit. I head to Japan Nov 3 so any help appreciated! Thanks for the video I never thought to crush the blacks in natural (the profile I use the most).
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
Honestly if you’re not looking to ‘have fun’ colour grading, I would totally stick to Natural! So to answer: 1. Yes, not straight forward to get a perfect match, and just a headache dealing with different grades for differing clips if you aren’t looking for practice 2. I have seen some horrible artefacting in 8 bit Log. If you’d be upset seeing purple noise in your lower mids and shadows, I’d avoid log in 8 bit. 3. Cine-D is technically the half way house giving a bit more latitude and dynamic range than Natural. If you wanted to extract an extra 3% of latitude from the sensor then that’s what it’s for, BUT the colours are a lot less pleasant than Natural, especially with skin tones. In the end I shot Natural, liked the image and never once got comments from clients. If you want to retain latitude to grade in post, don’t crush the dhadows in camera and it will still take some contrast and saturation to make things pop more if required. No one will miss the tiny bit more dynamic range you could’ve got otherwise, it’d only be noticeable in side by side shots IMO. Enjoy!
@ChessBoxin Жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles hey I really appreciate the lengthy I'm depth answers and quick response too! With the said I'll just stick to natural and I will experiment with cine d. I'm a bit confused to hear that skin tones get worse through cine d if it has more dynamic range than natural. But my guess is something I will understand the more I shoot and experiment with it. Thanks again!

Hi Myles. What do you think about shooting in Cine-D in 8-bit and applying your LUTs later on? Is 8-bit good enough for it? What about settings of Contrast etc? I mean values. And is Zebra 100% fine? Thank you in advance for your answer. I use Lumix GX9.
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
8 bit and Cine-D is fine, obviously more flexibility with 10 bit but if you make sure your white balance and exposure is good in camera while shooting you’ll be fine I think. Settings values I think I give them in this video for the LUT 👍🏻 I’d go 95 zebra to judge your overexposure, good luck!
@aleksanderkozak5204 Жыл бұрын
@@ShotByMyles Thank you for the answer. At 5.28 there are the parameters. Do you think Cine-D ensures much more DR than Natural profile? I wonder if skin can be graded very well vs Natural profile. Ok, Zebra 95%. How do you assess you LUT vs Leeming's one?
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
@@aleksanderkozak5204 not much more DR from cine-d, but if you’re pushing your grades then there is some IMO, but it’s still going to be noisy if you’re trying to dig detail out of the shadows. Honestly I really liked using Natural and any minor reduction in DR would probably never be noticed by a real world client. Natural is a better starting point for skin tbh, but cine-d is good if you’re comfortable grading, especially for a more ‘cinematic’ look. I personally didn’t love the Leeming LUT I had but then he did revise them and built it out in to things like luma corrections. At that point I was using my own or grading from scratch or trying GH Alex!

Great video!! Im a professional tattoo artist and i wanna do time-lapse with my gh5. What settings do you recommend? Tnx in advance
@ShotByMyles Жыл бұрын
Tbh you can still use this method and settings in the video, but for max quality (at the cost of more time in post) you could do a photo timelapse. A shutter speed of about half a second to a second is what will give you the motion blur, and then you need to think about how much footage you want. For a 10 second timelapse at 25 fps you’d need 250 frames, so if you’re filming a 2 hour process you’d need to be taking a picture at least every 30 seconds (2 phots a minute, 240 photos in 120 minutes). A half second shutter speed is quite long so you might need an ND filter to stop your footage being over exposed. Enjoy!
