There might be some truth in that, Ferguson says in his autobiography that Keane was the only man who scared him, so that might not be cowardice, which seems uncharacteristic for Ferguson, though others present might have had that at the core of it. The general narrative seems to be that Keane had built up so much respect in the dressing room that his authority was a threat to Ferguson. Keane seems to refute that and basically says he always knew where the line was. I agree there was something strange going on with his sacking and it wasn't about those comments he made. I'm also sure that, in terms of personnel, that was the start of Manchester United's undoing. The club simply couldn't have done what they did without him. With Scholes (and, alright, Giggs) still there, they were just about able to paper over the cracks, and slow the decline, but once Scholes' superhuman talent propping them up was retired for good, they were on their last legs. And that was Ferguson's biggest mistake of all: he failed, over many years, to find anyone who could take over from Scholesy. And certainly from The Captain as well. Well. Here we are.
