What he's actually doing is making sure players that were important to UTD's success get the recognition they deserve. UTD's success was built up over time, the hard work was done by players that weren't always in the limelight.

Keane's comments on David Beckham, both on this show and in other places, always solidify what pretty much what everyone who has played with him always says... A player who, despite being arguably the biggest superstar in the sport at the time, was always a hard worker on and off the pitch and a consummate professional.

I've watched this a few times, and I can't help just take from it, that Keane is not only extremely humble.... but his respect for other players as HUMANS, is amazing. He's spoken about taken advice and tips off senior players, when he was in his youth... and also he always talks about being a senior player, and having others take information from him. At 35 years old, the names of Hughes, Sharpe, Bruce etc.... it's great to see him remind me of how good they were. Whatever you think of his punditry, you can't deny he's so respectful about players HE'S played with, and also humble about his journey.

Oooh I’d agree however, I couldn’t split him and Gerrard. Gerrard is the man - a one club man, great captain/leader - a better player than Keane as well. By the neutral Gerrard is considered the greatest, I believe. Maybe you say Keane cos you don’t want to seem biased towards Liverpool. Maybe Keane the bigger captain, the bigger ‘born winner’ but Gerrard was better at everything on the pitch, a proper box to box midfielder... some of his tackles, and his goals - oh boy! And Gerrard was a one club man - you can’t put a price on that these days. 👍

Good to hear them talk about Ince. All the other famous midfielders were beloved at one club, so doesn’t get the nostalgia the Gerrards, Scholess, Lampards and so on do. But Ince was such a great player. Amazed to see Keane pick him ahead of Scholes, who is one of my absolute heroes, but pleased too to see him respected. And also how he just casually compared Trent Alexander Arnold and Beckham! Not wrong either, but just shows how the game has changed.

Van Nistelrooy had the most aesthetically pleasing finishing I've ever seen. Immediate, deadly. Unfortunately the team he went into had a bit of trouble, for one reason or the other. He may not have had quite the technique of Lewandowski or Benzema, nor a team behind him that harmonized as well at the time as Bayern and REal do now, but his strikes and instinct would be unrivaled even today.

@iownyou1559
@iownyou1559 2 жыл бұрын
Roy talked about the character the most and football being priority irrespective of what else was happening around those players. At that time (even today) if you are at United, you definitely have players with skills and talent. It is how they keep their hunger for Trophies high and take responsibility when the game is not going their way. Some of the current squad players won't put effort and drown easily in negative emotions even when the game is a draw. Maybe the low desire for glory due to hefty pay-check and long contracts made them think they can't be disposed of for putting less shift. Also, As Roy pointed out most of the players at his time at United were self-motivated for improvement rather than coaches asking them every day to train hard or work out the issues themselves. They just follow the training module and when something comes out of the syllabus, they choke. I think the brilliant character is the most distinct feature of any big team that separates them from other teams because in terms of raw quality United had brilliant players then and even now but that mentality in the squad is missing.

@@Pianosnail12 John O'Shea was a pretty decent tbf, practically a swiss army knife of a player. An essential component for a squad that dominated the league for so long. Wes Brown too was a solid player you could rely on.

Garry is disrespected by many plastic fans, yet Garry played his entire career in Man Utd! He had struggles with many injuries (sadly). Maybe that's why he wasnt always on his level.

3-4-3 formation Van Der Sar Stam - Ferdinand - Vidic Neville - Keane - Scholes - Irwin Ronaldo - Van Nistelrooy - Giggs I didn't go with Schmeichel because I think Van Der Sar will be more comfortable with this defense. He knows Stam from his time with the Dutch team and had great success with Rio and Vidic in their prime's. Rio is a sweeper in this formation and expected to start attacks from defense - like he did earlier in his career, especially at Leeds. On the counter, the wing backs will also be expected to contribute. Neville and Irwin have the stamina, pace, attacking and defensive attributes to do this. I expect one will always be in defense, meaning there will be 5 attackers and 5 defenders at any one time, with Keane shielding the back 3 as a defensive mid. If the team needs it, he can also contribute going forward, he was comfortable on the ball, could spot a pass and is able to shoot from distance. In attack there hasn't been a better 10 than Scholes, his long range shooting ability, technique and passing are second to none. Giggs and Ronaldo will bring the speed on and off the ball. Irwin, Giggs and Ronaldo can also take free kicks whilst the wing backs and Giggs can also cross. With the 3 CBs, Keane, RVN and Ronaldo there's a huge arial threat at set pieces as well. These factors combine to mean Beckham can be replaced to a large degree (plus he's not as effective in a 3-4-3). Finally, as there's only one centre forward, i've gone with the best goal scorer imo. Rooney and Cantona get honourable mentions but I don't think anyone was a specialist and as consistent in that department as much as Ruud (besides CR7).

Better than anyone Keane included in his team. Presumably left him out because he was well past his best when Keane arrived at OT.
