At 35 years old, the names of Hughes, Sharpe, Bruce etc.... it's great to see him remind me of how good they were. Maybe Keane the bigger captain, the bigger ‘born winner’ but Gerrard was better at everything on the pitch, a proper box to box midfielder... some of his tackles, and his goals - oh boy! Roy is the type of man you would want by your side all life. 🥺 What a brilliant character and football player!! The fact that he always refers to the pitch as trenches tell you all you need to know about how he felt about the game, his team and his teammates.
@iownyou15592 жыл бұрын
Roy talked about the character the most and football being priority irrespective of what else was happening around those players. At that time (even today) if you are at United, you definitely have players with skills and talent. It is how they keep their hunger for Trophies high and take responsibility when the game is not going their way. Some of the current squad players won't put effort and drown easily in negative emotions even when the game is a draw. Maybe the low desire for glory due to hefty pay-check and long contracts made them think they can't be disposed of for putting less shift. Also, As Roy pointed out most of the players at his time at United were self-motivated for improvement rather than coaches asking them every day to train hard or work out the issues themselves. They just follow the training module and when something comes out of the syllabus, they choke. I think the brilliant character is the most distinct feature of any big team that separates them from other teams because in terms of raw quality United had brilliant players then and even now but that mentality in the squad is missing.

I followed United home and away during Keanes era and Ince was an immense player. some games he was just incredible. Pallister is arguably the most underrated centre half in english history. Great picks from Keano. Becks got criticism from people who didnt watch football. if you did watch him you would see a player of great courage, as hard a worker as anyone & bled red white and black. Top man Becks.

3-4-3 formation Van Der Sar Stam - Ferdinand - Vidic Neville - Keane - Scholes - Irwin Ronaldo - Van Nistelrooy - Giggs I didn't go with Schmeichel because I think Van Der Sar will be more comfortable with this defense. He knows Stam from his time with the Dutch team and had great success with Rio and Vidic in their prime's. Rio is a sweeper in this formation and expected to start attacks from defense - like he did earlier in his career, especially at Leeds. On the counter, the wing backs will also be expected to contribute. Neville and Irwin have the stamina, pace, attacking and defensive attributes to do this. I expect one will always be in defense, meaning there will be 5 attackers and 5 defenders at any one time, with Keane shielding the back 3 as a defensive mid. If the team needs it, he can also contribute going forward, he was comfortable on the ball, could spot a pass and is able to shoot from distance. In attack there hasn't been a better 10 than Scholes, his long range shooting ability, technique and passing are second to none. Giggs and Ronaldo will bring the speed on and off the ball. Irwin, Giggs and Ronaldo can also take free kicks whilst the wing backs and Giggs can also cross. With the 3 CBs, Keane, RVN and Ronaldo there's a huge arial threat at set pieces as well. These factors combine to mean Beckham can be replaced to a large degree (plus he's not as effective in a 3-4-3). Finally, as there's only one centre forward, i've gone with the best goal scorer imo. Rooney and Cantona get honourable mentions but I don't think anyone was a specialist and as consistent in that department as much as Ruud (besides CR7).
