I'm going to use metal dowel rods to avoid wasting plastic. They are also re-usable. You can get them from hardware stores, physical OR online. You simply print holes in both halves of the mold and stick them in. You can get dowels with a flat side to allow trapped air to escape the hole. You could also print a hole all the way through the parts, with a slight shoulder to trap the dowel rods. That would save even more plastic.

Yes it should work. Please remember that we're making the molds here, not the mug itself. So for the mug, you need to take care of the hollow part as well, similarly as you do in any hollow casting. The molds can be 3d printed using this process.

Very good tutorial and inspiration 👍 To keep the symmetry I would rather made first a cube, then cut out the model and then cut the cube in two halfs. Sure, applying keys is then a bit more work. Anyway, the boolean modifier hasn't made me lucky yet. I use now the boolean addon which appears then in the toolbar (right) It works perfectly. You only have to select both items in the right order and then apply the boolean operation.

Great video! One small remark: Unfortunatelly it wouldn't work in this way 3D printer walls are not so flat, that it will be tight enough. Maybe for concrete it will work, but not for any liquid :/

Yeah if you're using a crappy 3d printer, pick up a Bambu or resin print the mold. Never had an issue with some very light sanding.

Yes, it's possible to use premix building construction material to create a 3D printed object. In fact, nowadays there are complete apartments and buildings that are constructed by 3D printing. But these printers are very special and only a few of them are available. They are very costly too. In a standard 3D printer we mostly use plastic materials.

This is actually a mold. We are creating a mold that can be 3d printed and then a real vase can be made using that mold. So the mold is not hollow, the actual vase made out of this will be hollow.

Unfortunately the object in the video would never be molded in a two part mold like the video shows because of the texture on the outside of the object. Trying to part both sides after casting would be impossible or would break the outside object. Also, the keys in the video are not at all how we make keys when we make molds, because they have parallel sides, you would want the keys to have keys angled walls so that seperation is easier.

Hi, I got the first point. You are right, we may need to create it in 4 parts if the texture is very rough or uneven. However, with respect to your second point, we did add bevel to the keys so that we can remove them easily. They do not have just parallel sides. I know about this problem and it is well addressed in the video I think. Is there still some gaps in our understanding?

@@5MinutesBlender The object would need to be molded in what is called a ''glove mold", with a hard exterior shell, for that, the technique you describe would be adequate, because the outside of the glove mold would be slick. Seeing as the object you are showing is a vase, you would also need to use more advanced molding techniques so as to be able to have the hollow interior.

Hey, Great tutorial! when i exporting it as .STL for some reason Cura things that the object is hollow, not sure what to. Tried to make it solid with Solidefire, but didn't work. Gatta watch more tutorials

Yes, very much possible. But it is still required to add some taper for easy handling. Or you can manually rub it with a sand paper after printing and make it suitable to push into the lock.

The procedure will be the same. But you need to do it separately for the left side and the right side since they are not identical. We duplicated one half to the other, but you need to prepare both the halves separately.

There does seem to be a minor problem with this mold. If what you are planning to mold is a solid vase it seems to work rather well. However, if the vase you intend to mold will be hollow so you can actually put flowers in it, I think you will be out of luck.

That's true. We can easily create a hollow model (using a boolean modifier) and it can be 3D-printed without a defect. However, it cannot be used as a mold. As far as I know, molding a hollow object involves rather some manual process like welding along a seam, or molding using wax. That would be out of scope for this tutorial, so we did not go there. You are correct that this process is good for solid objects only.

This is actually perfect for slip casting. You would 3d print the mold. Then you would make silicone master molds of each half of the mold. Then you use the silicone masters to produce plaster copies of what you originally 3d printed. Then you pour slip (liquid clay) into the mold. The plaster absorbs the water content of the slip forming a shell of the object, aka a hollow clay vase. Once you fire it, glaze it, and fire it again you have a finished functional ceramic vase (and the molds to duplicate that vase as much as you want).

This is not a vase. This is a mold to create a vase (which will be hollow). We are creating the mold here.

Yes, this creates a mold, not a vase. It can be used, after 3d printing, as a mold in order to create a hollow vase (following the usual hollow molding processes).
