Pro tip: leave the feeler gauge in place and tighten the adjuster screw until it drags a little bit, and then tighten the nut in place. This will make it so that the gap is perfect every time. Valves should also always be adjusted when the engine is cold for it to be accurate (at least on Hondas, other manufacturers may vary)

Agreed. I just crack loose all nuts and then use the proper gauge and readjust each valve to perfect. It's really faster than trying to test each one with several gauges and then adjusting the bad ones. Another tip if you have a manual tranny: put the trans in reverse with the parking brake off, then gently bump the car back with a knee to turn over the engine. Much easier and faster than turning the crankshaft with a wrench. If you have a CVT you'll have to use the wrench method though.

Great advice, i think i discussed this idea ages ago and instructor mentioned people use it in real world but its not taught due to liability a very new and careless mechanic could get it in their head you tighten it down all the way on the feeler gauge and just leave it resulting in everything overtightened, but where common sense isn't a issue definitely the best go to way roughly where screw needs to be set.

Good job. Small advice: before removing the valve cover try blowing/wiping off dirt and grime around the area so nothing gets inside the valvetrain later.

Another tip. If the 10mm ignition coil bolts start to seize up while removing, try adding a bit of penetrating oil and tightening and reversing the bolt a few times until it starts to loose up. Make sure to apply even downward force (versus at an angle) on the bolt. I was able to save one from breaking by being gentle and patient. I noticed there was a good amount of corrosion on these bolts after getting them out. Be patient on this step because breaking one will add a significant amount of time to this job. Thanks for the great DIY video btw.

Thanks for the video Nikko- very well shot and informative. One thing-- I would go 20 ftlbs of torque on the spark plugs. This is the new spec from Honda, since 13 ftlbs results in the plugs loosening over time, and you risk a blow out. I am getting 23.5- 27 mpg driving non-aggressively in the city on my 2012 Fit Sport and thinking it might need valve lashing. Only has 70k miles on it, but I recently replaced the plugs after one was loose and caused a misfire.

Thanks so much for the detailed video! I will be doing this soon so it will help immensely! Just an fyi, it is recommended to torque your spark plugs to 20lbs-ft! They updated the torque spec because these engines are known for plugs loosening and causing blow outs! KZbin won’t let me post links, but it is a well documented problem if you google it.

Recently subscribed and loving your channel man. Love your wheels and that color. I have an 08' automatic in silver. I drive it very frequently but don't have a lot of miles on the tac just due to my current distance to work and previous job had insane amounts of traffic but It needed a valve adjustment about 3 years ago at 73K. The engine was sounding like it needed it again the last few weeks so I actually dropped it at the mechanic and then came home to see you posted this video. Haven't gotten the car back yet to see what they say but I really suspect it just needed another valve adjustment but definitely seems early since it's only 3 years, 10k miles. I'm not sure if you're every 100K is accurate and mine is an odd ball or if these really need adjustments more frequently depending on how they're driven/what climate they're in. Keep the Fit content coming tho!

thanks for the kind words! 10k miles seems way off in needing an adjustment. They mightve been adjusted improperly or its a different issue

Based on NGK's recommendation, I wouldn't use anti-seize on their plugs. It can affect torque values. I never used anti-seize on my NGK plugs on my 08 and never had any issues of them getting stuck.

Update: My 07 fit was idling rough and would stall after idling for 20 seconds. RPM would drop when backing up or going into first and would usually stall. I did EVERYTHING you did in this vid and even threw in a new map sensor and EGR valve. Purring like a fuckin kitten dude no shit. Revved the engine a bit and the RPM didn't drop the engine wasn't rattling at idle started right up and only shut off when I wanted. The engine can tell you when it needs it. What to look out for is the obvious intake ticking, you'll know when you hear it, or likewise when you start throwing engine misfire codes fairly frequently due to exhaust side tightening too much, resulting in valve being left slightly open which if not addressed will eventually burn a valve.
@ObsoletePencil2 ай бұрын
I have also said friggit and bent my feeler guages. But I'm kinda amazed how much you're turning the screws; I make the smallest adjustment and it's two guages too much.

Funny i just found this after completing it myself. Something about the search algorithm didn't bring it up on my other youtube account but found it while searching "Honda Fit Valve Noise" which leads me to other part of comment. How much noise is normal? I completely removed the harsh ticking but its audible, although atleast even now, more like even light tapping now. First valve adjustment i've ever done by myself so i'm left wondering how much noise is normal. I also did a bit of a maverick move, maybe not terrible but left exhaust side near max correct adjustment (.012) since i've heard as they go out of spec over time intake loosens and exhaust tights and last thing i wanted was anything leading to a burnt exhaust vale. I figure i may of ended up with a bit more noise like this but hard to know whichout hearing another Fit. Any thoughts? Great guide overall would of happily used it if the algorithm would of thrown it my way, not sure what was up with that.

I just bought an 07 with 208k had 3 misfires (1/2/3) and the rocker arm 1 code. I was getting TRASH fuel. Like 20-26mpg. I replaced the sparks and ignition coils. Used some Techron and 93. Fuel went from previous MPG to 31mpg documenting it over time. Just ordered the VVT Solenoid and we’ll see what happens. Appreciate the video. Might take a crack at valve timing soon. None the less I want to crack this engine and see what it looks like after 208k miles hoping to turn it into a nice daily that can be taken to the track for the wife and I.

I had a 2008 and after doing my valves and plugs it ejected one (after around 15k). I had used anti seize and the factory torque specs. Luckily they were able to helicoil it but I’m a bit leery about the torque specs doing my 09 fit today. I’ll take a video or 2 and note the differences but it should be pretty similar. Plan on torquing plugs to 20ft lbs and no anti seize.

@@sham27007 pretty sure they all said 13ft/lbs and were updated in a service bulletin due to plugs ejecting.
