The gentleman singing lead in the second song of this 2-song medley from the musical _Hair,_ is Billy Davis Jr. He and the lovely lady in the mostly-yellow blouse, the incomparable Marilyn McCoo, were married in 1969 (a fact that hit me hard in the 70s, when I was a teen with a bit of a crush on Miss McCoo -- Mr Davis definitely 'married up' - lol). Their Number 1 hit 'You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show)' would be a great song to react to. They became the first African American married couple to host a network television series, The Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. Show, on CBS in summer 1977, and are about to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary.

This song bookended Hair, with Aquarius as the opening number and Let The Sunshine In closing the film. You're in for a real treat whenever you get around to watching this movie - I'm sure you'll love it. As musicals go, it's actually pretty epic, both story-wise and musically (tons of other excellent and now-classic tunes throughout). A side note on this signature line from the song: _When the Moon is in the seventh house_ _And Jupiter aligns with Mars_ _Then peace will guide the planets_ _and love will steer the stars_ This actually makes sense in terms of astrological symbolism (setting aside whether astrology is actually valid): the Moon is associated with emotions, the seventh house concerns relationships, Jupiter is associated with idealism and generosity, and Mars with action. Whether or not these alignments portend the kind of peace and love suggested in the lyrics, they'll usually be given a pretty positive interpretation overall.

Billy Davis jr, the lead singer of the last half of this song left his wallet in a NYC taxi in 1968, and the next man in the cab, who found it, worked on the Broadway show HAIR and invited them to see the show so he could return the wallet. Then The 5th Dimension all loved the opening song, Age Of Aquarius and wanted to record it. But their producer saw it was only half a song and came up with the idea of combining it with the closing number of the show Let The Sun Shine In.

The singer is Billy Davis Jr. His background is Gospel. They found out about this song Because Billy lost his wallet in a cab and the man who returned it to him was the producer of the play Broadway musical Hair! When the group came and saw the musical they fell in love with the song Aquarius! When they approached their producer to do the song he felt that it was not appropriate enough because it was really just an introduction song which is what it is in the musical. So he came up with the idea of adding "let the sunshine in" which is at the end of the musical to make it a two-part medley!! So when the group all started singing let the sunshine in the producer turns to Billy Davis and says "okay take us to church!" Billy looked at him and said "What?" And the producer said "just do that gospel thing that you do" and the rest is history!! I'll say Billy Davis definitely took us to church at the end of that one!!!

This came out when I was very young and it was on the radio all the time. I have fond memories of the next-door neighbors, where people would hang out in their backyard a lot at night and just have small spontaneous parties. One of my favorite images is they had their little record player out there on the back patio and they had the 45 RPM single to this. Age of Aquarius was on side one and then let the sunshine in was on side two. They would play it and the tween and teen neighborhood girls, some of them my babysitters, would be out there in their bare feet and their short shorts and their tube tops doing these kind of sneaky serpentine dances in the moonlight to Age of Aquarius. And then of course when that ended they would go over and flip the record over, and we would all just dance our asses off to Let the Sunshine In. it's just so joyous. HAIR was a really well-known musical from the late '60s or early '70s before it was a movie. We ended up with the record album because my mom actually liked it a lot. Same with Godspell.
