My husband and I have watched your videos and followed all of your adventures. We decided to go full time starting in February 2018. We've been renovating a 1986 Fleetwood Prowler 18' and where in the process of downsizing to start the new chapter in our lives. As parents of six grown kids with seven grand kids we were looking forward to be living together alone for the first time in our 23 year relationship. September 30, 2017 at the age of 47 my husband suddenly passed away. My world and all our dreams were shattered. I have wrestled with continuing our dream as a widow but have decided to take the plunge largely in part because of watching your channel along with Less Junk, More Journey and many others for tips and tricks. Thank you for taking us on all your adventures and giving me the strength and courage to do this as a new widow. I will be starting slowly but am keeping with our original departure date. Again thank you two and all the kids for sharing your lives with us. I hope to possibly meet you on the road! Safe Journeys to all! With Love Mystic P.S. I going with a new camper just for piece of mind.

You two are freaking amazing people with awesome kids. Kick-Ass parents. The kids are extremely happy, loved, free to be who they are, and blessed to have such awesome parents. Every kids dream is to have parents who are active, fun, silly, and just as adventure seeking as they are. With three teens there is always going to be normal hormonal mood swings, privacy concerns living so close together, and the typical sibling squabbles. But as a whole this family is pretty freaking awesome. Bravo. Cheers from Seattle!

Weve been camping close to 30 yrs, stepped up each time, till we got our 1st 5 th wheel about 11 yrs ago, Its a 1999 32 foot Travelare, and we absolutly love it. We went to the Toronto RV show and saw that Solitude 373 that you just showed us, wasnt that absolutely Incredible, Grand Design seem to be a step above the rest. and the customer service is seemingly top class. Now just have to win the Lottery. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Having full timed for 6 years and owned a fiver, a diesel coach, some pop ups and now a Class C, since we are back in a house, there is lots of candy out there, but look at the fit and finish, consumer reports, etc. We are planning on selling our home soon and going back on the road! We love it and miss it! Now to the hard part; which one! We loved our diesel coach, hands down. Easy setup, tear down, etc. If you plan on moving a lot, the only way to go! Cons: 2 engines and vehicles to insure. Not quite as much space as a fiver, but close, depending on the rig you chose. Ideal size, 40' Fifth wheel: 36' to 38'. Ideal size for 2, lots of storage, more like an apartment and only one vehicle to repair/insure. Cons: longer to set up and tear down. Most don't do as much in the moving around and tend to sit for longer periods of time. Bottom line; buy used, save on the big depreciation and most of the bugs, if not all, have been worked out. Before you purchase, pull the slides in and see just how much room you really have! 3 slides max in my opinion, would really settle for 2! Final choices: Diesel Coach: Foretravel, Prevost, Newell, Beaver~ all used! Fifth wheel: Mobile Suite, Grand Design, Teton, NuWa~ all used! Sorry for the long post! Enjoy your vids and your kids are getting the education of a lifetime. America the Beautiful!!!!

Well said, Joe - I'm with you on nearly every point... wondering if we can live with a Class A and no toad. Or, even a Class A toy hauler for the Harley (looked at a used Damon Outlaw 3611). We'll probably see what's out there in spring, 2019. :-)

Guys, as you said, you know that you want a fifth Wheel. My strategy is set a comfortable price that you need for your present unit, if you get a buyer at that right price than it sort of decide for you for getting the FW you want. The longer you wait the more depreciation you get for the present unit. You already know what you want and your kids look ready to get their own separate place, so that’s a given. But unless you have pulled a fifth wheel before, you have no idea how stable and absolutely wonderful to travel with one. Nothing like that feeling of being comfortable and safe on the road. My suggestion, if you can get a good price for your existing unit, go for it. It look impressive to pull one, but remain of the opinion it easier and feels and is so much safer than a travel trailer. These sit right on top of your truck rear axle, amazing difference. We had a pop up trailer and was looking at fifth wheel as a retirement dream. Got a heart problem about 15 years ago, when I came out of the Hospital I told my spouse forget retirement dream, the dream is now. First we purchased the truck, super duty F350, I was scared to drive it of the lot so big it looked. A week later hooked up a new FW, I was literally shaking so nervous I was. Pop up to the big truck and rig, Wow. Now retired, second fifth wheel, third pick up, 15 years of joy. Ok I’ll stop here... Go for it! And for your truck I recommande, air bags on the truck with compressor and a remote to fill and let out air while your hooking on unhooking your Rig.

Last July we traded in our 2015 Forest River travel trailer and got a 2017 Jayco 5th wheel. Our floor plan is very similar to the last one you showed with the bunk beds looking almost identical to ours. This floor plan is gaining popularity. I had been the "I don't want bunks, I don't want the fireplace" guy until as with Trish, I'd heard some good things about them and now I'm very happy we have both! No more putting up and taking down the couch and dinette when our grandchildren will travel with us and fantastic extra storage on those bunks when they don't. While we had bought our new one just after returning from our trip with the grandkids, we did do a shakedown trip to make sure all worked before parking it at home for the winter, North Idaho, but very much looking forward to next years grandkids trip! Before living here we used to live in the Victorville area of California and went to the Pomona show every other year or so to see what was new. Still looks the same in what you showed, so many RVs, after a day they all kind of melded together unless you took notes about the ones you'd like! We have a 3/4 ton, crew cab, 4x4 Chevy diesel, and I always wanted to stay with the 10,000 to 11,000 gross weight, 12,000 is tops for us. I never wanted to tow something as heavy as the ones you looked at and the Jayco we got is 34 feet long "half ton towable" and a gross of around 10,000 pounds, just right for us. You've got the truck now, good luck getting the best 5th wheel you can when you go for it!
@JosephBrown83805

Oh yeah, length. Towing our travel trailer, 33 foot long, truck and trailer were right at 60 feet long. With the 34 foot Jayco, but a 5th wheel, and truck and trailer is 49 feet long.

I love RV shows! I'm so glad to see that the designers are starting to put lighter colors in the interiors of the 5th wheels. We painted our kitchen in Hazel and it really lightened it up in there. We definitely love having the 5th wheel for the size and space. Ours is an older model (no longer made) but we think it has everything we need, so we'll hold onto her for a while, I expect - especially because we'll have one out of the 'house' in the next 3 years... EEEKKKKKkkk!!!

I love that you made the statement at the end about knowing what you want but being happy where you are! I admit it’s easy to be jealous of your travels and wishing we could just take off too, but even though we’re empty nesters, I babysit a couple of my grandkids (we have a 3yr old grandson named Carson) 5-6 days a week, and I am so thankful I can help our kids out in that way. Grand Design rvs are awesome. I just got my 310GK 3 weeks ago, LOVE IT! Sooo nicely appointed, great quality, roomy, massive storage. I bought it from Blue Dog RV (dealer with about 10 lots throughout Or, Wa, Id, Nv), they offer "Forever Warranty" to the original owner. Can't say enough about Grand Design and Blue Dog. Took care of me very well, great deal, great support! Love you guys and your videos, what an awesome and good looking family, great personalities all around...

RV shopping is such fun, and your excitement is infectious! The dynamics of your family are pretty specific, so the right choice is critical. It was fun and interesting to see these great rigs. We are on our second travel trailer, and are considering our third one. We are leaning toward the ATC bumper hitch 20’ toy hauler. The ATC line is second to none in quality and durability. The units are all aluminum construction. No wood anywhere, and a top quality build. If you like motorcycles, ATVs, etc., it’s the only way to go. Thanks for the tours. We really enjoyed them.

Most rv’s are 30 to 40% over their value. Our unit , with a full paint paint job listed for $108,000, we paid $66,000,so be willing to work your price or be willing to walk away

A layout that has always stood out to me is Coachmen's Brookstone 395 RL. It has a second living room/bunk house that almost feels like a den. Above this room is an entire 2 person loft. It's super spacious and a good fit for lots of people. That is, if you can handle the unit's 40 feet and 16,000 lbs. : D

I have always thought how does a family with three kids live in a small travel trailer. I just thought that it was rude to say anything. I love the Gran Design products and have heard nothing but great stuff about them. The best part of this post is the joy in the kids and Trish's face as they look at what is available. We love you Ginger but maybe this family has outgrown this travel trailer. See ya next Sunday guys

Yeah, all was good when Ginger was new and it was summer. After the honeymoon period was over, the kids got bigger and Ginger got smaller, but she's served us well. At least we have it her dialed in now, but more space would be nice.

Toy Hauler is best for families. We have a Voltage V3200 and 3 kids, nothing else out there would work and be as versatile. Hauls motorcycles or whatever and bring the bunks down at the end of the day and make another room.

Loved your video on the RV show. We always go to the shows in Oklahoma City and Dallas/Ft Worth, and have this for years to determine what would meet our needs. I would recommend window shopping, you get educated fast on the quality of the RV's, and the sizes. Hubby and I were going to purchase a 5th wheel originally. After climbing stairs to get into your RV, and then climbing stairs to use the bathroom each and every time we decided to go with a 38 foot trailer. We're both older than y'all, and hubby is a disabled Veteran so we went for mimimal steps to make life easier. Later if and when you decide to make the jump to a 5th wheel keep in mind most parks have limits on RV size for parking. We have limitations on our 38 foot trailer. Generally we stay outside state/federal parks. Enjoy going to RV shows to help for future decisions. You may.also want to check out RV factories there fun, and educational. Enjoy the rest of your weekemd! Hugs. Sandy Livesay

We have been watching your channel for over a year now...and have so many similarities between us. We bought our "Vinnie" 28DBSS Northland 2016 last Oct, with 3 kids (14, 12, 10), AZ Family, and my DH name is Mark with a "K"...and a year of multiple weekend trips and a few week long trips...we decided to do a year on the road in 2019. So in preparation for that, we decided we need bigger space, so 5th wheel shopping has been all we have been doing for the last few months, every weekend. I can travel nurse, so that is our ultimate goal. Anyways, we upgraded our truck from the 1500 RAM, to a 2500 Diesel 4x4 2018 RAM Bighorn 2 months ago so we can narrow down our FW options. I think we have come down to a Montana High Country 370BR. We love the " midbunk/den" style rigs. It gives the kids their own area, without sacrificing the family room. We love the table and chairs options, no more booths. We also have found that the 2 door RV fridge to be just fine, and not requiring the residential...all though, it does than come equipped with an inverter. Anyways, just thought I'd point out the midbunks as options...the few we had in our top 5, Reflection GD, Chapparel Coachmen, Sabre Cobalt, Montana HC, Keystone Sprinter, are all dry weight about 11-12, so max around 14k so easily pull with a 3/4 ton truck. Keep up the great work hopefully you will still be out in another 18 months. :) A a good KZbin video guy that has educated us on how to better understand quality of FW is big truck bug RV...it has opened our eyes... maybe you should meet up and do a combo video LoL

Just found your channel and look forward to some binge watching to catch up. 2 weeks ago we bought a Grand Design 376TH for my wife and I and to go full time in May 2018. We really love the small garage to take a motorcycle along, the front living room double slide and many other amenities you noted with a GD fifth wheel. A TH that does not give up that residential feeling was exactly what we were looking for. Yes it is heavy and really big but our dually seems up to the task. What hooked us was the ability to take along a motorcycle and explore the areas around our camp site. We are from AZ as well and looking forward to your western adventures as we will be close behind.

Nice video guys. One important thing to look at with these trailers is the available cargo capacity. Especially with a family of 5. I believe the Solitude only has about 2,000 pounds difference between empty with no options and full GVWR. That gets used up quickly after you fill the water tank and add all your stuff for full time living. The other thing of course (and you addressed briefly) is that pin weight on some of these larger units. Some of these can quickly overload many full size trucks. Especially after adding up weight of passengers fuel and cargo. Look forward to future videos!

I agree. I only go by max numbers. How much rigs weight dry is not relevant. I think the only person who uses that number is the sales guy! ;)

Looked like a lot of fun. Us adults get exited going to an RV show but taking the kids, that's insane :-) I'm looking forward to your travels this season and see how you make the cold weather, and how you prepared ginger to handle it. We had cold weather that hit here about the time you were doing this video, and my managers 4 season older 5th wheel froze up. We skirted it and he's doing good now, but traveling down the road could mean problems. We do have people that live in RV' s year round but when we get down to 30° below I question it. Enjoy!

I landed on your channel in a roundabout way by looking into Expedition vehicles (my daydream), I would love one to travel the world but it seems it will never happen, (I have looked at how can I do it now, but so many barriers at the moment) so I keep my daydream alive by watching your channel, I started about 4 weeks ago and I have now watched every one of your videos. You guys are awesome, I LOVE your journey and your videos, hat's off to keeping it going for us fans, there are a few interesting video channels out there that I subscribed to but they are not updated very much or even at all. I know the effort that goes into it, the most tedious thing for me is sorting through the many hours of footage to come up with 10-20 minutes of "magic"! I won't even start on the uploading part! Please keep it going, I cant wait for Season 5. Another day-dreamer from Hermanus - Western Cape - South Africa.

You can't go wrong with the Grand Design. We have a Solitude 375 RES-R and love it. They are built very well. With that being said they are also very heavy. As you know being a full timer, pulling the trailer is the easy part, stopping it is a different game. We had to upgraded from a Ford F-250 to a Ford F- 350 dually 6.7L diesel. It seems like overkill but it pulls so much better and stopping it is not a problem. Good luck with your decision and stay safe.

Was your F250 6.7 diesel? That's the engine I have in our F250 so the difference would only be the suspension. I could add disk brakes to the 351 if needed.

Love the videos from you guys. My wife and I are living the full-time life in our new Jayco Pinnacle. It's a tough call between toy hauler and residential style. We finally just went with what we got the best deal on and fell in love with the living space of the residential floor plan. We only have our kids part time between the other parents so only having one bathroom is ok for now but when they are all with us I think we'll need to buy them shovels and send them out to the woods! Good luck on the choices!

Just a quick note about the fireplaces in cold weather. There is a sensor that doesn't allow the heater to come on if it's too cold inside the rv. If it's cold inside, you have to initially warm up the rv using the propane furnace. Once it is warm, the fireplace keeps it nice and cozy. I thought my fireplace wasn't working properly in my rv the first time I tried to warm it up

Just a great video and this was exactly what we did. WE sat down having the benefits of 3 Riggs over a 24 year period and decided what we wanted in our new home on wheels. We then took our 3 Iowa grandkids and told them find the coolest rig here and wow they were off to to the races. What we wanted was not possible towing limitations. So we went smaller and cost wise a little more basic. We're happy with our 22 and in a year or 2 I'll get a nice Truck then 2 to 3 years after that our 5th Trailer that will be everything we've ever wanted in a rig. For now get it and get out.

We really like our rear living Grand Design reflection. If you go with Grand Design in the future have the wheels and drums pulled and check for grease on the drums and shoes, its a known issue from the factory. Also you might want to consider a disk break up grade, it will make a world of difference on a single rear wheel truck. Love the videos keep up the good work.

Love your videos! We have a 2017 Grand Design Imagine 2950RL. Hearing you talk about GD made us feel great about our decision. All RV's have issues the difference with GD is they stand behind their product! We had a couple of small warranty issues and they authorized a mobile tech just due to convenience for us. Keep travelling and keep the videos coming ...we wait each week for your upload.

With a 5th wheel,the center of gravity is in the middle of the bed of the truck vs the tail. Better turning ratio too. Which makes for better pulling of the trailer. There is one drawback,which is not only with 5th wheels but with all trailers is length,most state or national parks have length restrictions. When you have time maybe a short video on road etiquette, like leaving enough space between you and other drivers,etc?
@KeepYourDaydream
@KeepYourDaydream 7 жыл бұрын
I agree about the length and we really would like to be under 35, but these kids are getting to big! We learned that the 35 rule in National Parks is only a guideline (check out our Joshua Tree episode). Turns out the "spirit of the rule" is to stay off the road and not damage vegetation. Yet, campgrounds are not setup for big rigs so that still applies. I like the idea of doing a driving video

Good job on what you were able to put in the video. I'm sure it was hard editing it to not have it be an hour or more longer than it was. My wife and I attended one in OKC this year and it took a couple of days to sort out what we did see. Complete sensory overload! I recommend picking up the fliers for the trailers you are interested in, and writing notes on them to reference later. Price, weight, length, brand names of appliances and such. Taking pictures of the layout maps for the individual trailers helps a lot to. After you walk through 3 or 4 of them, they all start blending together and anything you can do to help separate them in your head later is worth the time to do it. If you haven't picked out your next RV yet, good luck!

Thanks Scott. When I started scrubbing the footage and I was very nervous that I didn't actually get any footage of the RV! After we were done oh-ing and aw-ing over the RV... it was hard to remember to go back and record it. And then the rig was full of people! Luckily it worked out, but the next show will be better!

Great video! We have a 2017 Grand Design 303RL and absolutely love it. Of course ours is a couples coach and wouldn’t fit your needs but we were impressed with the quality. We had an Open Range that was a great unit but we hated the floor plan. Awesome quality though. And as others have said, be mindful of length. Ours is approximately 34 feet tip to tip and we can’t fit into most of the state parks where we live.
