Tip #86: Cut the dingle berry off the end of your MIG wire before each and every start, preferably at an angle so the wire tip is sharp!

Great tips. I sorta learned a lot of this by trial and error. I had to weld up a 1/4" 2x2 angle frame that was 6'x27" as the base frame for my table saw station. But what never occurred to me was to fit that outside corner so that you could drop a fillet weld in there. Good stuff man.

For short pieces, I put another piece behind the first so that the loose jaw has metal on both sides of the pivot.

Anthony, I am completely beginner and I am confused by which type of welder to buy, and whether those "chinese welders" on Amazon are worth it. I will predominantly be welding angle iron or square steel tube. I have access to alot of free 1.5x1.5 1/4 angle. My thoughts at the moment are to buy an older, very basic used lincoln arc welder (which can be had for 4-5 hundred $. I believe 250A is plenty for 1/4 stock. I don't have a big budget for a saw so for now I plan to use an angle grinder or even hack saw for coped 90s. What do you think? Is this sufficient to beging or should I invest in MIG or TIG from the get go? I just want very strong welds. I don't plan to move out of the relationship of steel. Thanks, and keep the seminars coming!

I do most of my fabrication with stick welding, it’s not always as easy but I don’t have to worry about lack of fusion. However slag is a pain

Thanks again. Great information. Don't apologise for the detail, it's appreciated. You mentioned bevelling a few times and this is exactly what I was thinking of asking you about. Could you please tell me or do a video about why, when and whatever there is about bevels before welding? Maybe that includes the 90 degree bevel created by two pieces meeting at the corner. Fyi, you're the only one I've found who says anything about them. Also, I thank you for your precision. I'm tired of others attitude of rough cuts and grinding which takes twice as long and then they complain about jobs going overseas. Sorry for my bitch.

On a belt sander it isn’t a good idea to tilt the work up as you suggested. It’s better to bevel with the work flat on the rest or hold off the rest completely. A friend of mine who is long gone. Sanded off about a quarter of his thumb. While it may have created clearance for the next time I would not suggest you follow his lead.

Why didn’t you just arc weld the angle iron with 6011 to eliminate the need for beveling ?
