++ LUMIX BGH1 DESCRIPTION ++
Moving the LUMIX camera range into fresh new territory, the Panasonic LUMIX BGH1 Cinema 4K Box Camera is a modular, box-style digital cinema camera with a miniature form factor, making it ideal for gimbal and drone work as well as broadcast, live streaming, vlogging, and cinema production. This box-style digital cinema camera features a 10.2MP M4/3 sensor, an MFT lens mount, and a wide 13-stop dynamic range to accommodate extreme changes in light. It records video with resolutions up to 4K60 and incorporates VariCam Look workflows such as V-Log L and Cinelike, dual-native ISO using its Venus Engine, anamorphic support, advanced AF (autofocus), numerous remote and power options, and it supports HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) color for vivid imagery to aid professional color grading. There are many features packed into this tiny form that make it the go-to production camera in any mobile and multicamera production environment.
The BGH1 provides multiple ways to record your footage to high data rate files in the ALL-Intra Long GOP, MOV, and MP4 recording formats with H.264 and H.265/HEVC codecs. The camera supports unlimited recording time and allows you to record 10-bit 4:2:2 video using the camera's dual SD card slots. It can output up to 4K via the HDMI 2.0 output, or you can output up to 1080p resolution via 3G-SDI. The camera allows you to output via HDMI and 3G-SDI simultaneously, so you can use one signal for monitoring and the other for recording. It also supports recording at variable frame rates up to 1080p240 for high-quality slow-motion video. Custom 3D LUTs can be uploaded into the camera using the SD card slots.
The BGH1 is also an ideal camera for multicamera environments, not only because it's highly mobile, but it includes timecode and genlock BNC ports, so you can sync up with other cameras to make syncing in post-production easy. Its RJ45 Gigabit LAN port allows you to sync with other networked BGH1 cameras, manage the camera settings and functions, and even perform direct IP streaming with a future firmware update. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality are also integrated for monitoring, configuration, and control via a smartphone or tablet using the LUMIX Sync app. Another function integrated into the BGH1 is a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C input to control the camera with the LUMIX Tether app, which allows you to capture still images and control up to 12 BGH1 cameras. There is also a 2.5mm LANC input for an additional camera control option with an optional external controller. Audio features include high-grade 48 kHz/24-bit LPCM format, an integrated stereo microphone, a 3.5mm mic input, and a 3.5mm headphone output. The optional DMW-XLR1 XLR adapter can be utilized using the camera's integrated hot shoe, allowing you to record with professional microphones.
Its compact form measures less than 4" square and weighs only 1.2 lb, so it can be used on gimbals or drones for high-quality stabilized footage. Its internal fan keeps the camera cool during long shoots, and its aluminum and magnesium housing provides protection and adds to the cooling factor. It also features four 1/4"-20 mounting threads for mounting on a plate, cage, or tripod mount. There are four user-programmable function buttons around the housing, as well as tally lights on the front and rear. You can power the BGH1 using the included power adapter, with a separately available high-capacity VBR-type battery using its integrated mount, or by using PoE+ (Power-over-Ethernet) via the LAN port with compatible PoE equipment.

I’ve recently been researching the BGH1 and BSH1 for my home studio. While I have learned quite a bit from your channel of these cameras, you have also expanded my understanding of how to manage the cameras. More importantly, you have also expanded my understanding of balancing settings to manage flicker on video shots (e.g. setting at 221 for shooting the ATEM mini ISO extreme). Thanks!

Awesome! BTW the flicker rate seems to change… I think the brightness of the buttons affect it. I’ve had to recalibrate it several times.

As a working commercial photographer, I would have to say this is one of the best videos on a box camera. Not only did you point out a few features, you most importantly showed in a workflow. I far to often see "reviews" etc showing whats in the box (I freaking hate) and just measurebation on specs and pointing to things. A good example, I once saw a famous youtuber review the Sony A9 and say "I dont know why they have ethernet, such an old thing, usb is the new fastest" Nay I say, when I shoot runway, me and my crew use the ethernet port to push files to our back end tech as we shoot! No card dumps, and select images are being processed and upload to the venues website, instagram etc.. sorry going far off base, all in all, great job showing how a professional my use the equipment in a real working enviroment.

This was a great video this is exactly what we are looking to do in our studio. I have some silly questions, first, how are you routing audio so when you edit you can sync up all your cameras. Secondly, can I use a smart video hub instead of a switcher and run that to my hyperdecks to record. Also I am also looking at the ATEM 1M/E it has 10 inputs but I am unsure how I would get this to send ISO outputs to the hyperdeck.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott. Audio is through a MixPre then into the ATEM and is included on all outputs to the HyperDecks, so they all have the same audio. That’d work for sync but I actually use timecode. A SmartVideo Hub should work as long as it has enough outputs. I don’t have a 1 M/E but look for the AUX outs - however many it has is how many decks you could connect to follow my configuration. Before you spend all this money you might want to consider booking some time with me at PhotoJoseph.com/1to1 - could save you money in the long run!

I've been watching all of your videos on the BGH1 and the BS1H and they are incredibly helpful. We currently run two Blackmagic Cinema 4Ks and a basic PTZ camera through a Blackmagic ATEM for our events. Camera control through the ATEM is great but I would love to have the more full-featured control that you see through the BGH1 ethernet control. Question: are there any auto power-on options for BGH1 or BS1H? Our BMCC4Ks currently turn on/off when power is supplied via the AC adapter, which happens automatically with a power relay we have set up. The BMCC4Ks have the physical power on/off switch, though, whereas the BGH1 has a button. For volunteers that run the setup, I'd prefer for the cameras just to come on instead of requiring them to reach over a balcony railing to power them on or access the power on via the app.

Thank you so much for a great video. We are getting ready to setup a new shooting location and we planned on doing pretty much exactly what you did! I hadn't seen anyone online yet who was using multiple BGH1s. I had a hard time finding the Studio Mini because it looks like it's discontinued and the new version only does 1080. Looks like the Studio HD+ will do, it's just a bit more expensive. They also have an Ultra Studio 4k Extreme 3 which would be the same cost but I can't figure out where the footage goes (no SD or SSD). Do you have a video that shows the timecode functionality and how you use it? That would be super helpful. Keep up the good work with an amazing channel and top quality multicam videos!
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the HyperDeck Studio Mini that I have has been discontinued, and replaced by the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus, for the same price as the ones I have ($695), which does up to 6G SDI (2160p30). I have _no_ idea why they named it "HD", because it's not. Bad naming. That records to SD cards, just like the ones I have now. The UltraStudio products aren't recorders - those are playback devices. As for Timecode - I did this video for ATOMOS a while ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ7HlmmQbMt7laM but as far as how I do it in my studio - one UltraSync ONE is feeding into the ATEM 2 M/E, so the HyperDeck recorders pick it up from there.

Regarding jumpcuts, you could always have the one camera and punch in when you need to (easily done with a 6k camera, if your videos are 4k)
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
True. However a 6K BS1H camera is $3,500 vs two 4K BGH1 cameras for $4,000, and the edit always looks better when it's a slightly different angle vs a straight punch in. You're 100% right, and this is something I tell people all the time. But I prefer two cameras.

Great presentation! What type of lenses are you utilizing? I am setting up a similar studio, and I am trying to figure out if I should use zooms or primes. In other words, since my cameras are fixed for the most part, should I figure out the distances and use prime lenses instead of zooms.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
OK, so the front wide is the Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 and the front tight is a 35-70/2.8. I thinking of getting another 35-70 for the front wide; I rally like having the flexibility of the zoom. The overhead is a 12-60 usually, unless I need it tighter. The front close is the 50-200 and that lens is almost always on there. If I use the over the shoulder, it might get the 50-200 and I put something wider on the front. Hope that helps, but yes I'd recommend zooms, and fixed aperture zooms if possible.

Are you limited to using only 4 3rds lenses, or can you use lenses with different mounts? How do lens mount adapters affect the image quality?
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I did quite a few videos ages ago on this, but here’s the good and the bad news. You can adapt nearly anything to MFT, and cheaply buy adapters to do it. The bad news is that most lenses worth adapting are full frame, so become 2x the focal length, and you’re cropping past what could be the most characteristic part of the lenses (the edges). Search Amazon/google for any mount to MFT/M43, eg “EF to MFT” / “EF to M43” and see what you find. There’s also a few focal reducer lens adapters that will help alleviate the crop; a few years ago the Sigma 18-35 on EF mount plus a focal reducer was _the_ lens combo MFT enthusiasts raved about.

For the camera that helps avoid jump cuts, do you have a strategy for aperture? Do you try to set the two main angles the same or always have the tighter shot shoot at a lower f/t stop?
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 5 ай бұрын
The tighter shot has a shallower depth of field because it’s a tighter lens. Of course the exposure is the same, but I’m not trying to make it look like the same camera; that’d be impossible. Think about the parallax. My goal is to make it look however like I’m still looking into the lens.

Very nice presentation. I love Lumix. But unfortunate that SDI output is not 12G SDI. I am thinking what's wrong with setting up a multi-camera over optical fibre cables? How long the cat6 cables can go up? In my multi-camera setup, the camera positions are anywhere between 100 meters to 300 meters away from the PCR. Hence I use OFC. But the All box camera is a boon with the central control system. What about grading LIVE? anyhow it's a great new avenue.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah as mentioned here, I do wish the SDI was 12G. Fiber would work fine, even the new breed of Fiber HDMI cables. Cat 6 appears to have a 100m max length, but you can of course run that through switches as you go. You're not connecting the camera directly to the computer over ethernet; it's all going through switches. If you want to use these in a live scenario, then these will work beautifully with any ATEM .

Great video, I'm interested in multicam setups. I recently started youtubing with GH5 + teleprompter + pedal control and this works fine. However, one of the storylines I'm planning would require an overhead camera (shooting table & hands) and I was considering BGH1 (=main, GH5 overhead). Is it difficult to match colors with GH5 and BGH1 ?

If you shoot Log it’ll be easy enough. If you shoot with GH5 II it’ll be even easier, as the sensors there are closer.

This is one of so many awesome videos you put out there...thanks so much! One question: I am considering building the BGH1 for an installation (I have 3 personal ones for location shooting) - is there any issue with leaving them on at all times? I usually put things together and break down but this would be something closer to "anyone can record at any time" so I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to that. Naturally the ATEM is built with that in mind but not sure about the BGH1...thanks!

That's because ALL cameras with HDMI out have latency. Since your audio is coming in the mic port, then that's in realtime. You can delay the audio in the ATEM settings. I did a whole video on this, here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmGai4ptZ6iGepI

@TheBurnsStuff

@@photojoseph I second this, with a caveat. The GH5 does have wireless networking built in, though it is a bit limited in capabilities. I connect my GH5 to my wireless network and use the ImageApp (android) to control my camera. The environment I use my camera is dirty and I don't like to get grease and oil all over it, so this works for me. Having said that, the Lumix Tether Windows software only works with my camera when connected directly to the PC via USB. I have tried to connect my GH5 via wireless direct to my PC but, the tether software does not recognize the camera. Also, this connection method is far from stable.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Right, I should have specified "wired" network connectivity. The only chance to add it would be if there was a way for the data to go over USB, via a USB to Ethernet adapter. I have no idea if the USB ports would support this (there are often hardware limitations), but if it's a software limitation , then that'd be amazing. Pretty different cameras, really. The BMPCC camera can be controlled from the ATEM which is pretty sweet. But you don’t have as much control as you do on the BGH1. AF is good on the LUMIX, useless on the BMD. Too many differences to list here.

Great video thanks! Do you think they're a way to trigger sync start/stop multiple BGH1 using timecode or gen lock port? If I have 3 camera on set, pressing REC on One could start the 2 others perfectly in sync? Is that possible? This way all 3 video files start at the same time.
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
Not that I know of. Genlock doesn’t carry a start/stop signal. Recorders can be told to start recording when timecode rolls, but I don’t think the cameras can do that. You can trigger multiple cameras simultaneously from the LUMIX Tether app, however it’s not meant to be frame accurate so probably isn’t. But of course if they all have the same timecode then syncing is of course trivial. I’d try the app to trigger them and see how close to same-frame start that is. BTW if you join the channel as a member you will have access to a private Discord server which could be a good place to ask questions like this, and of course you’ll be helping support the channel! Don't the Blackmagic Design cameras allow you to control them by sending commands over the HDMI or SDI cables? One thing I would love in a studio set up, is having a network port that has POE so the same cable could power the camera. The newest POE standard can put out as much as 100 watts. There aren't many switches that support that much POE power yet though.

Some BMD cameras can be controlled from an ATEM, yes. And the BGH1 does get its power from Ethernet, actually. I don’t think I mentioned it here which was a total oversight. You need a PoE+ switch to get enough juice. All of mine we being powered that way.

Ok, you need to configure each camera individually first. It can be a little finicky getting it set up to be honest but once configured it works great. Here’s a guide on that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJLLanStrLyhpbM - also be sure you have latest camera firmware and latest multicam software. Once configured, if a camera ever drops offline or doesn’t show up, refresh the camera list in the app first, and if that still doesn’t show, restart the app, and last resort, reboot that camera. Each update has improved this but it still happens sometimes. I sleep my cameras when I’m not using them and nearly never have to reboot anything anymore.

There's no easy way to move the video from RTSP (that's what comes over LAN) into a video conference app. That's basically asking a remote streaming protocol to become a webcam. If you want to use it as a webcam, then just connect USB directly to the camera and install the Panasonic webcam driver. Or, connect HDMI from the camera into an ATEM switcher.

@@photojoseph It is fairly easy I would say. I have a dedicated OBS computer + atem mini that feeds into my work laptop. OBS can accept RTSP/NDI/some other network feeds just fine, then it flows to the atem as it is the only really stable way I have found to sync video and audio. OBS is not robust for this, the atem works fine, but I don't use USB for the video output to zoom as again, atem had a lot of issues with audio sync on the USB port last year. Instead I use HDMI for the video feed to the computer with zoom and a elgato camlink there. Annoying work around, but totally eliminated all audio sync issues I had and been rock steady for a year. May sound a bit complex, but I don't make video productions, I use this to make my zoom more fun and engaging and higher quality. Basically I bring in video and overlay some effects on OBS side while I use green screen and final audio mix on the atem (I do however feed audio through a motu mixer before the atem) Now experimenting with making this more flexible. More cameras and easier ways to swap between work laptop and various private devices. I have very mixed experiences with several USB cameras on the same computer and unless the camera can use stock windows drivers, there is always some stability mess that causes the need to restart something at times. Elgato Camlink is much more reliable in my experience, so over last year, I really prefer a hdmi feed to the camlink over other USB solutions. I used to have a blackmagic deklink input as well, but to be frank, it is also less stable than the camlink and it has become truly temperemental since I upgraded to windows 11. I can buy more camlinks, but after playing with NDI lately I feel more like moving things to ethernet. Especially because a single cable solves all needs if you can use poe. For existing HDMI, a HDMI to NDI converter is not that much more expensive than a 4k camlink but I need to test more to see how stable it will be with multiple devices. I plan to test a NDI converter on the atem output as well so I can easily feed to different computers. My testing with swapping laptops using NDI as feed to zoom is so far a positive experience. Just seems to be more robust than moving Camlink around. Anyway, this is getting messy to explain, but the BGH1 looks like a fun box rather than a dslr with HDMI and a ndi converter :) As long as the RTSP video feed hits OBS with a latency similar to NDI devices (no more than 10's of ms) and is latency and general link is stable , I should be able to adjust the rest in OBS and Atem mini

@@photojoseph Btw, yes, you did reply to this. I did not notice, but for whatever reason (I don't remember) I have 2 youtube ID's on the same google account? I need to study that a bit more, but anyway, I have been replacing both desktop computer and mobile phone over last month. One is posting with one ID (TerjeNM), the other is posting with a different ID (Terje Marthinussen). Same google account. I first wrote this question on my desktop (using TerjeNM), but later could not see it on my mobile phone, so I posted it again on my mobile phone. I notice now that I can only see the postings I do with TerjeNM on my desktop and vice versa on my mobile phone.... Guess I have found a youtube bug here somehow...

@@photojoseph I found a decently priced used BGH1 in the end and bought that. Turns out that the RTSP feed is actually pretty good. Setting up OBS with gstreamer for recieving the RTSP feed (this is critical, the built in RTSP support buffer 1-2 seconds of data, so very laggy!), the lag in OBS is actually lower than if I connect the camera to an elgato camlink 4k HDM to USB dongle. It is also 5-7ms faster than my Black Magic decklink 4k card in HDMI mode, but 5ms slower than the decklink using the SDI feed. I get some 130-150ms from camera to OBS preview pretty much no matter if using SDI/HDMI/RTSP after setting 60 frames, 1080p, turning off sound processing (known to add latency) 4K feed is however very laggy on RTSP. Could not make that work. Unfortunately, this is a bit slow vs. the Sony A7rii I normally use. It will be 5-6 frames delayed and this lag is a lot easier to handle in terms of audio sync and not feeling confused when you see yourself in a lagged version. I can get 5-6 frames lag from the BGH1 if I set HDMI to raw and grab the output from SDI, but that don't fit my cabling so well overall. To my surprise, in terms of picture, I prefer the BGH1 over the A7 as long as iso is below 8-12k (I am not using this for professional streaming, so I am often lazy with the lights). I hope Panasonic somehow can bring out a fw that could bring the latency closer to 5 frames and allows using the tether app like normal when outputting RTSP. That would be awesome. Anyway, happy to report that the RTSP output is in the middle of HDMI and SDI in terms of latency as long as I don't use 4k and have a client that does not buffer (1-2second buffer is normal default for RTSP clients) and otherwise processes fairly fast. That makes it quite useful.

If you have them all hooked to the network via Ethernet, do you not even have to use the timecode/genlock settings on these? That’s the reason I really like these! The fact that you have those BNC’s and if you have a MOTU interface… BAM!!!
@photojoseph
@photojoseph 2 жыл бұрын
MOTU? You still need timecode and genlock if you want timecode and genlock. Those aren’t communicated over Ethernet. That’d be amazing but there’s no way that could be accurate enough. IP Networks are designed for congestion and to redeliver dropped data; timecode has to be 100% accurate and on time or it’s useless. Still, I love the idea!!

Sorry, but I didn’t quite understand what scenarios for using this installation? For shooting KZbin, 2 cameras are enough, one is rolled up and the other is frontal. The only thing that comes to my mind is in film studios with green chroma key. But even there it is thought out in advance what should be in the frame and everything is calculated. Is it very expensive for videoconferencing? Please tell us about real application scenarios. Who is yours in the studio?
@photojoseph

I guess you’re new here. This “scenario” is literally my own studio. I use it for KZbin videos (some content can use more than two angles; go figure!), client videos, live production, and so-on. This isn’t fictitious. This is MY studio, MY setup, and I use it nearly every day.

For what I’m doing, BGH1 or BS1H. You have far more control over the cameras on the network. If only doing live in HD through an ATEM, then the BMPCC are great.
