According to K&N's website, their drop in filter for the 392 is rated at 780.2 cfm at 1.5 inches of water. This would be a slight improvement over stock, but not sure if it's enough to show up on a dyno. The dry aftermarket filters seem to flow less than oiled ones, so I would be surprised if the AEM out flowed the stock filter.

Man, I have been meaning to comment on one of your videos for a while. Just couldn't decide which one and didn't have time. Now I'm sitting here recovering from hernia surgery watching ALL your videos so it seems like a good time to share some feedback. You have got to be the most laid back, friendly, informative and honestly helpful car guy on KZbin, by a pretty big margin. Never hear you grasping at straws to justify a mod, and always so straightforward about your experiences and recommendations. I've never watched one of your videos and felt like "omg I need to buy this;" if anything you've probably saved me a ton of money on intake, exhaust, and other minor mods that internet bench racers insist make "night and day differences" they can feel as soon as they think about starting the car. And again, you present all that great info without a hint of ego, just down to earth experience and a really refreshing friendliness. Thanks again for this video (I'm running the hellcat filter in my SRT 392 right now) and all the rest of them. Keep up the great work and keep having fun doing it!

hey bob ,,first time commenting on your channel or youtube for that matter,, I have a 2015 scat pack that i bought new 2 yrs ago and i love the car,,the first mod i did when it was a few weeks old was put in a aem filter,,after that i really didn't think much about changing out to something else cause i thought it was good ,never really noticed any change in response or power but it was brand new at the time and quite frankly it has gobs of power anyway ,,last spring i put in a hellcat airbox but continued to use the aem dry filter no noticeable change ,,but there's a cool factor in having air sucked in thru the headlight,,after checking out your channel i decided to go with a hellcat filter,,put it in tonight and yea man i noticed right away the response,,even the sound, was better according to my butt dyno lol,, so thanks man for the info and the time you put on your channel,,,one thing id like to mention is buying a real hellcat filter was a little time consuming online because most sites sell fram or other brands but are a generic filter that fits all ,srt ,,scat pack and rt but doesn't flow the same as a hellcat filter ,, so to your subscribers beware,,, found mine on rock auto big jon

I know a lot of us performance guys appreciate the time and money you spent on this endeavor. It's real world results that count, especially if you are racing where every hundredth counts. Having said that I've spent too much money to even think about on CAI's over the years and just recently said to heck with them. I just drop in a $50 K&N filter and call it good because I know I won't have to clean it but once a year. Yes I've gotten a little bit lazy with age, but I also realize that most factory intake systems are pretty darn good right out of the box. Again great video sir and please keep up the great work!!

JetTech1966 Thank you very much! I'm with you on the validity of car's on modern cars. That's the whole reason for most of my testing. most of what I test is in direct response to aftermarket claims of "gains". when I spend my own money and put them to the test the results usually wash out unfavorably for the claims made.
@JetTech1966
@JetTech1966 8 жыл бұрын
That is for sure!!! Those "claimed" gains are a figure that some marketing guy pulled out of his butt....lol....Of course some "add ons" might give you a 10 to 20 hp gain on the dyno. Awesome. But you won't feel it. You can hear it if we are still talking CAI's, but you won't feel it. Well placebo wise you might...Modern day engines are so well tuned.

@bmasontv
@bmasontv 3 жыл бұрын
Considering the data on the K&N Filter shows that it doesn't flow as much as the stock paper filter, coupled with the fact that I did a data acquisition on the green filter, commonly known to be the highest flowing of any of the drop-in filters and found absolutely no difference in data. No change in kPa whatsoever. No change in time stamp acceleration either. We have several cars that have backed up this test result at the drag strip. Furthermore, we've been able to show no real gain in performance with an aftermarket cold air setup. Granted, this is only at roughly 650 - 750 horsepower to the rear wheels between the three cars. The filters simply did not offer any Improvement in E.T or mile an hour. Which quite frankly is annoying, considering I have a brand new green filter and cleaner kit that I have absolutely no use for now.

hey I love the review, but only one question. after asking around and doing research the stock heads only allow 340 cfm. whats the point of allowing more when all it is going to do is get bottlenecked down at the heads? seems to me that even dirty the stock filter allows more then enough air flow for these stock engines and any and all changed would be a waste of money.

If you're looking for a cam that's going to still be Snappy under partial throttle yet yield a decent game up top, we can do that. I have an ignorant question (I’m a pretty fair medic & firefighter, but cars & their donks? I’m like Oddball in Kelly's heroes- I just ride 'em baby, I don’t know what makes them work) Aren’t performance air filters less able to filter air? Using any of these, wouldn’t I be letting more foreign objects into the motor, wearing it out quicker? It seems to me air filters must be a compromise between filtration & volume of airflow, & performance filters must filter less thoroughly than everyday run-of-the-mill filters? So as much as I’d love to make my srt8 bellow, & as much as I’d like to improve mpg, a performance filter will shorten the life of its engine? Like I said; don’t know much about cars, but if you help me understand this, I’ll tell you about the organ of zuckerkandal.😺 Thanks in advance for the positive waves!
@bmasontv

As a general rule you are correct, performance air filters and I use the term loosely, typically do not filter are as well. They sacrifice filter capacity for air flow. Thing is the Hellcat filter sacrifices nothing to achieve the airflow that is capable of.

You have nearly $800+ in air filter/intakes on hand (e.g. LegMaker, Mopar, Hellcat box). You removed the Legmaker, the clear winner in terms of being a true CAI, and put on a Mopar kit - which I believe was after a Hellcat CAI converson. That's a lot of time and money for air filtration. If the Legmaker was the winner in terms of CAI, why remove it since your car is a weekend car? I mean you went trough all the work... I believe your final choice was the Hellcat box/filter exchange. I have to ask. Why bother with a $350 Mopar CAI? If you did not have a 2015/2016 where the Hellcat airbox was an option (I have a 2011 SRT8), would you do the Hellcat drop in filter swap only or one of the other setups? Lastly, as a gear head - does the open airbox like the Mopar increase intake/exhaust feedback or cool sound? :)
@bmasontv
@bmasontv 8 жыл бұрын
Great questions! The main reason for all of the intakes is purely for testing. I wanted to cut through all the BS and Bro Science and find out which is actually "better", if there is such a thing, as it pertains to air filtration and power output. The Legmaker may make it back onto the car at some point. My main issue with it was the fit and installation. Think in terms of "beta testing." It just doesn't fit that well as delivered. I will be fabricating some brackets to solve that issue. The Mopar made it to the party in the same spirit of testing as the Legmaker. An open element filter with a heat shield vs the legmaker seemed to make for a good comparison test. Plus, it is a Mopar part so I figured if I was going to give any open filter a chance, Why not go with the "factory" part? If I had the previous gen Challenger the intake I would recommend is actually the stock inclosure with a hellcat filter. It just works VERY well. If the LMCAI fit better without modification it would be a close second but you simply cant beat the price of just a HC filter in your stock box. As to the sound... Not much. The HC filter will translate a little more throttle blade whistle which is kinda neat, but overall, no real change that I could tell.

The stock box is better engineered for flow. All the CAI does is make noise. Put a better filter in your stock box and be ahead.

I would be curious how far back the airboxes/filters are interchangeable. I have a 2011 but the Hellcat did not come out till a bit later. Are the Hellcat filters interchangeable with 2011 392s? Dodge being cheap may mean the kept the design the same but who knows. Again, a great segment.

Doug Kessler they should be. the air boxes seem to be unchanged. The only real difference is in the placement of the intake tube for the PCVcircuit circuit on the upper box. aside from that the filters should work.

It's funny you should ask that. I just did a live show where I date log the car with the filter in the car, then removed it and logged it with the filter out of the car. literally an a - b - a comparison and the data shows that the car prefers to have the filter in the air box. KPa went up and air charge went up when I put the filter back in. This agreed with the data that I took before the video started with my data Logs with the filter in the car it was repeatable. So to answer the question, the car would not benefit from the filter being removed based on the data that I have. Feel free to check out the video. It should be under live streams

When i put the factory tube back on it back to normal. totally confused. What are thoughts of the problem, its a simple mod at least i thought it was.

Everette Devan make sure you seal the threads and also make sure the petcock, if equipped, is closed.

anything but K&n should be fine. K&N doesn't filter at all.

Anything larger than a small chicken gets trapped right away in a K&N! (that is how they can advertise a large flow rate)
