A camshaft is the brain of the engine. Pick the right one you'll be happy or pick the wrong one you'll be pissed. Been there done that. If it's a street car smaller cam are better. Don't give up your low end torque to gain up top. Like I tell people. My 496 made all its power under 6,000 rpms. It peaked at 561hp at 5,700 and at 4,200 made 585tq. Flat torque curb is what you want especially for a land yacht.

I finally get it. The 6.4 and 5.7 hemi were made to enjoy the motor stock. Great low end throttle response for fun car that you can daily or weekend. Yes there isnt much you can do to the motor to add serious power without getting forged internals. Dodge realized this issue, thats why they produced the Hellcat. Simply put if u want real power and can afford it, get a hellcat. If you want real power and cant afford a hellcat get a coyote or LS and mod it up over time. Yes i have a 6.4, but my next car will 100% be a chevy

Agreed...coming from the fox platform and the lettered cams E, B, F, X, Z ford basically tells you what’s best for your car with what modification will maximize this part. This is where Mopar performance falls way short with absolutely zero factory performance parts other than replacement motors. Rant over lol.

Good info Brian. I've noticed a lot of people get tunnel vision when it comes to cams in the Mopars. First thing they think...Comp 274...chops hard, big lift numbers, so it has to make the most power. They don't think about the tuning and drivability of the cam, and I know the 274 is a PITA for tuners to get right. I did my homework, and went with the MMX NSR lope 4 profile for my build. Cars with that cam have reliably made 480-500 rwhp, with some cracking 510-520. I also agree on the MDS delete...if you are going to get rid of MDS, do it the right way and buy all new Hellcat lifters. Just as sure as you only replace the MDS lifters, one of the original non MDS units will fail. Then you are stuck with doing a teardown/inspect to make sure no metal from the cam/lifter got into the bearings..$$$. I also went with the Comp hardened pushrods as a precaution. Stock stuff is decent enough, but better safe than sorry. Block is finally done, and should start going together this week. Oh, and joined the Ram 1500 club....traded my '03 2500 for a 2011 QC 5.7/auto. Time for truck mods....lol.

What's your opinion on the 392 cam? Manual version makes more possible power with MDS delete, from what I've read it's a literal drop in part for the 5.7 hemi that needs to be tuned. Obviously new springs / pushrods / lifters would be swapped at the same time but it apparently doesn't need cam phasers.

That’s interesting on getting hellcat lifters instead of non MDS delete kit, curious why? I absolutely love the sound of the cam at idle, and there “HCI” (porting heads, cam, ported intake manifold) shows to gain 100 HP which would be a plus, I would probably upgrade the torque converter too like they recommend, any thoughts on all that? And when I take it to the track, I run in the high 10’s low 11’s and I drive it home. I also have a 87 pick Chevy pickup with a big cam. It sounds cool as hell. @bmasontv2 жыл бұрын
I've heard of guys getting nominal gains out of that cam. But quoting Dyno number is doesn't really do a whole lot for me. Every Dino is different, and for that matter the same dyno can read differently at different times of day. (Uncorrected numbers vs corrected) The real test is, what does it run in the quarter mile before and after?. What other mods? Did the car have a tune beforehand? Did it have long tubes beforehand? The 392 cam isn't bad, it just has a very wide lobe separation angle. This kills mid-range and pushes power out to the right of the Curve. The advantage is that it has over the 57 is that it has more duration in more lift. Think of it as an in-between gain over an aftermarket cam. Pair it with a 6.4 intake manifold for best results. With all that being said, if you plan on running a positive displacement supercharger, the stock 392 cam is a very good choice

Good info, but one thing you keep not mentioning about the bigger camshafts moving power higher in the rpm range is that every tuner will tell you you will need a bigger stall converter say 3k-4K stall and taller gear so you will not notice a drive ability issue or a loss in low end if you do it all together. Yea if you just throw a big cam in and nothing else it’ll be a turd out the hole but that’s also not the correct way to do a build.
@bmasontv4 жыл бұрын
Agree with that, and I'll take you to step farther for most guys, a larger stall converter is not the way to go because of the Driving Experience of the car. You really do have to tailor the build to the owner. It was my car I don't mind, I'm used to lose converters and it's not that big of an issue for me. But it is true you do have to move that power up and when you're moving that power up and you soften the tip in throttle response and you loosen up the converter the car feels a bit sluggish even with that Combination. It's great for when you roll into the throttle but it can suck otherwise. Again, the bill has to be tailored to the owner.

The issue that I have is that I cannot find any data that is reliable on this intake. Nobody has back-to-back Dyno tested it and more importantly back-to-back dragstrip tested it. If they have, I can't find it. And the cost of it does not allow for easy testing. What has been said about that intake is that it is more or less the 6.1 liter intake with slightly larger runners. That doesn't bode well for performance by comparison to the duel Runner setup on the 6.4. We have you sit on stroker combinations, and it did not disappoint, but it didn't blow anybody away either. @bmasontv3 жыл бұрын
Opinions aside my first observation is that drivability is not something that you're looking for in this combination. That cam is going to want RPM. Without knowing the balance of the specifications, intake Centerline and lobe separation angle, I can only guess as to the tunability and driveability that it will offer. The intake manifold will not flow at the throat what an 88 can offer. It will need extensive work to get even close. The largest I typically suggest is 85 mm. Let me know how it works out

@bmasontv2 жыл бұрын
First place to start is set a goal. Do you want good drivability with a power bump, or all-out performance? Both require completely different approaches. Be honest with yourself here, Next, you need to find a reputable shop in your area that used to working with Mopars. Tuning is going to be extremely important.

@@Bill-bi7sk Dynojet or Mustang dyno numbers? Also, you got to be clear with what you define as drivable, drivability is extremely subjective. @@bmasontv is this from Peitz Performance? and do you also provide a Ported Intake Manifold? Or what do you think about the MMX Ported Intake?
@bmasontv3 жыл бұрын
@@392__SMOKE I have put cams together for both doctor differential and Peitz performance. It's all going to depend on what you're looking for as far as what the grind will shape up like. As far as MMX intake manifolds. Their Runners look great but where they lack is in the throat area on a 392. That's where a lot of, if not most of, the gains are found. I do quite a few manifolds for Doc Diff. Coupled with an 84 or 85 mm throttle body, that will help to get the most out of that intake manifold. Think of it more like blueprinting, than porting.

@bmasontv3 жыл бұрын
Best is a word that is incredibly subjective. It all depends on the combination and what the vehicle will be used for, or more to the point, what the power plant will be used for. So, is this a car, truck, boat, aircraft /air boat, power station/generator or agricultural equipment? Will this vehicle be involved in any racing activities and if so what kind? Drag racing, closed circuit racing, autocross, Open Water racing, sprint boat or jet boat? If this is a land-based vehicle, what is the owners anticipated comfort with gearing (street car)? In other words, will this vehicle be involved in Long Distance, road trip applications? If this vehicle is to be involved in Drag Racing, will the owner be opposed to a high stall torque converter (which will limit street drivability.) What kind of idle quality will the owner be expecting? What is their tolerance for heavy chop, poorly mannered cams on the street? Does the owner have any experience with cammed applications? Give doctor Differential a shout and he can get you sorted.
