I have recently installed one of your coolers to my BT50. I immediately noticed a substantial drop in temperature and the box seemed to perform better especially towing a 2.5 t van. I run a automotive mechanical workshop in the eastern suburbs of Perth and have started recommending auto coolers from Wholesale Automatics to my customers. Great gear!!!

Thanks for addressing the 'how cool is too cold' topic. I've fitted a trans cooler to my 150 Prado 3.0L, which was commonly running temps of 105 to 107 up hills, just heavily loaded (i.e.not towing). Now I've dropped at least 20 degrees off the top end, but for locked up highway driving the temps were sitting much lower than before at around 55 degrees. I was worried 55 was 'too cold' but seems there's nothing to worry about, so thanks for going into that. Cheers - David

I had the Ranger Ultimate bundle deal installed on my 2020 Ranger a month ago. ScanGauge 2 was regularly reading ATF temp around 102 to 105 degrees. Now with the twin heavy duty cooler, bypass value and deep cast sump the temp is down around 70 to 73 degrees.

Hi Murray I have a 2021 wildtrak with the 10 speed and my van is usually at about 2800kg up or down by 150kg I use an ultra gauge which reads in Fahrenheit so I sit at 90km or just aver when towing and the temp has never made it to 185F even when towing in 38C. I towed through the Adelaide hills on the express way it was cool but again never exceeded 180F. Is your the 6 speed? Pretty curious about the differences.

I have a case 1150 dozer and have had it cook the oil several times running regularly up to 130 degrees. Put an auxiliary air cooler in front of radiator to augment the oil cooling tubes running through bottom tank of radiator. Now runs better. Great site you guys run. Thanks

I'm 13 years into my 200 with 180K on it. Mechanical sympathy is the #1 tool. being aware of EGT and trans temp are part of towing and knowing what you're doing. I have had nomad and lockup for years, also get trans serviced at Wholesale as needed, trans fluid has always been good. Also noticed with the Safari Armax ECU with crazy KW and Torque, the lockup stays in a lot longer without manually having to engage it.

I agree with your comments 100%. I have a 5 year old D-Max which has had a transmission cooler from new. I fitted it because I have a trayback camper for serious outback travel with a travelling weight of 3.3 to 3.5 tonnes. Temps are normally in the range 50 to 60 and up to 75 in heavy sand. The D-Max in standard form runs oil lines through the radiator water for cooling. This makes possible water getting into your transmission. For Isuzu' engines you would have to be mad not to disconnect the original oil cooler lines and fit an external transmission oil cooler.

Why do you suggest an oil cooler for the gearbox oil?

I don't tow so I have not seen the high temperatures mentioned in the video but buying a Scan Gauge was a great investment for me for my 200 series. A bit of faffing around to be able to get the data from the ECU, thanks to the Landcruiser forum for the instructions on how to do that. I would definitely consider fitting an oil cooler if I was seeing the trans temperatures getting anywhere near 100c
@dark-grey1241
@dark-grey1241 Жыл бұрын
You mentioned Scan Gauge and that you prefer temperature gauges. I forked out the extra dollars for a Scan Gauge III for the best of both worlds: gauges (9 instant glance gauges on 3 screens selectable by one press of the screen) and the ability to check/clear fault codes, simple OBDII one electrical cable connection, etc. SCIII has two coolant temp readings in my Ranger that can differ a few degrees to each other. Scan Gauge III measures in 1 degree increments for temps. It also allows me to see the tyre pressure gauge readings I didn’t even know were fitted to the car. I bought a 2nd hand 2016 Ranger and a relatively heavy van in close succession. The Ranger was not fitted with a trans cooler when we towed the van home, but I had one fitted not long after that first trip, and the transmission fluid replaced at the same time.The first trip in pouring rain and ambient temps in the high 20s saw the transmission temp up to 110 on the hills. With the cooler fitted and fresh fluid I’m consistently at 90 and under. Now I’m watching the trans temp less, but still like a hawk, and the coolant temps more which respond well to driving slower up big hills, only when necessary. I’m not a fan of holding others up just because I’m towing.

I'm towing 2.7T with a GX (base model) 300 Series. The trans temp (monitored via a Scan Gauge 3) sits around 85c. It often gets up to 90-92c on hills and overtakes. I recently came back from QLD and went up the Toowoomba Range. It was a hot day, about 37c. The highest the trans temp got to was 95c. I have an alarm set for 97c and the only time it has gone off was when I was driving through a town in FNQ (I can't remember which one) and it was school time and the traffic was busy. It was about 30c and I was in stop start traffic. 97c was the hottest it got to. I want to fit a trans cooler but the 300 also suffers from high intake temps and there's an additional heat exchanger kit available for them. It doesn't fit with your trans cooler apparently. I'm also concerned that if a hose splits and trans fluid leaks out and the auto is damaged, Toyota won't honour the warranty because an aftermarket part has been fitted.
@WholesaleAutomatics
@WholesaleAutomatics 5 сағат бұрын
I know the 300 series struggles with the transmission heat in certain towing conditions as we have seen this a few times now. I would certainly be adding the extra transmission cooler but I can not comment as to if it fits the additional heat exchanger you mentioned, I have not seen one so i know know very little about it sorry.

Always an interesting topic. My 22 Triton comes with a cooler from the factory. I believe you can add an additional cooler from Wholesale Autos as well. Anyway, biggest thing for me was getting an obd2 reader and setting up my phone to display the ATF temps, along with other useful metrics. Being able to visibly see what my temps are and how conditions effect the temps was a real eye opener for me. It's changed the way I drive. Love these videos too guys. So helpful to get an insight into the auto transmissions. Thanks

Excellent explanation 👌. Explained why my Pajero Sport likes higher revs on long uphill towing. It will still pull in manual lower gear, however on auto it prefers a higher gear, obviously it's tracking transmission temperature. After throwing codes in manual once before, I tend to leave it in auto now.

I fitted a Mishimoto 500x190x19mm ATF cooler to my Toyota U760E transmission. It's the largest cooler I could fit behind the open area of the grill (the squarer coolers would be "hidden" behind the front bumper and not in the air flow). Since fitting the cooler my ATF runs at about 65 deg C most of the time and the fluid isn't black after a few weeks of driving like it used to be. My car is 11 years old and it shifts and drives better than ever.

Ive got a mk4 vw with the much hated o1m transmission, and i was shocked to see temps of 210-230 Fahrenheit on a light cruise. And ive seen 250 when running it hard. At least the fluid has been changed a bunch over its lifetime,but i recently added a big oil cooler What a change ,maybe its a placebo but it seems to shift nicer and is more responsive. Now im seeing 140-170 Fahrenheit for an average temp,and i havent seen it go more than about 190 yet. I know it won't last forever, but it's been pretty good for 140k! I just wish i did it sooner.

Thank you for a great and informative video. I have a 2020 3.2l Ranger and regularly run above 100 degrees. Your video prompts me to ask two questions. 1. How would the installation of an aftermarket product, like an oil cooler, affect vehicle warranty in the event of a transmission failure? This question would seem particularly relevant if an unlikely leak developed in a hose to the cooler or some other event that could be linked to an after-market installation. 2. Why do Ford engineers make these vehicles like this, which according to you will possibly make them more likely to early failure? I do understand if you do not answer this one.😊

Greg, we are yet to have ever seen a single case. They can't void your warranty as it's against consumer law, however if a problem is the direct result of our product, then I can't blame them for handballing you back to us and we are fully insured for such an occurrence. Luckily, after thousands of sales no problems so far. We have even had dealers call and order kits to help them with their own customers requirements. To answer your second question, If you use them as an everyday runabout they would be fine although would still last longer with an oil cooler installed simply due to making the seals last a lot longer but when adding bull bars, winches, off road tires, engine tunes, and the list goes on and on not even considering towing at this point. We do a lot with our vehicles in Australian that is considered largely uncommon in almost every other country, so when any manufacture is trying to build a vehicle for a widest possible worldwide market the Australians are certainly at the extreme end of the scale and I'm sure this makes their job far more difficult. Best answer I have I'm afraid Greg.

No room for a thermal fan and not the fix you should be looking for. What you really need is the thermal bypass valve installed as that will allow the coolers to work 100% of the time. The trouble is your current thermal valve is holding the oil temp at 90c + which is a complete pain. Fit the thermal valve and you will notice a huge difference. I’m waaaay late to the comments section. Stoked to have found this and as a subscriber, not sure how I missed it. Can you discuss oil cooler thermo fans. In part I guess it’s partly answered, in that it can’t be too cool here in Australia. I get that. However is there a reason you don’t include thermo fans as part of these kits? Is the air enough? Is it really just peakhour traffic that a thermo fan is needed/not needed? Is a thermostat best in the trans pan or over where the cooler is?
@WholesaleAutomatics
@WholesaleAutomatics 6 сағат бұрын
In most cases there is simply no room to add a thermo fan so we design the cooler kit to be as efficient as we can get with the cooler flow we do have. You will find that the air flow over the coolers is fine as you have both the air being forced through from the vehicle as it moves and also pulled through from the fan on the engine side. We have just never seen the need for a thermo fan.

coolant temp on nearly all modern vehicles around 90 degrees c so it's interesting to hear you recommend temps not go much over that, an engine coolant heat exchanger is going to have trans temp at 90c with no load and when the coolant temp cspikes to 100-120c (which is still fine if not boiling) on a hill so will the trans oil. i would've said oil temps over 140c are starting to become an issue.
@WholesaleAutomatics
@WholesaleAutomatics Жыл бұрын
No, not many run that high and even the new Next Gen Ranger has removed the thermal valve from factory to bring the temps down a little more now that they are running a lighter weight oil. Most models start to go into some sort of preservation mode at around 120c and most will also start to fault code at 125c. Only the older 4 speed autos used to be able to run at the hotter temps but not the newer 5 speed onwards models. I used to tell people to pull over at 140c until we started getting feedback that most don’t make it close to 140c without warning going off.

G’day Rod. Great video. Interested in any thoughts or experiences on your new cooler on a Next Gen Ranger. Generally I find my transmission (v6 XLT) only runs on the hotter side idle at the lights, and towing my van in hilly terrain. Seen it get rather warm on the beach too (40 degree day) - however nothing over 100 degrees, even whilst towing. In your experience, will adding a cooler block or restrict any air flow into the radiator? Keep up the great vids 👌

@WholesaleAutomatics
@WholesaleAutomatics 5 ай бұрын
No, you really don't need the fan as you have some sort of forward movement and the engine fan is normally pulling air over the coolers anyway. As for why you need one, well that's easy and as explained in this episode. Heat kills autos and reduces the life span, with a cooler the oil and rubber seals last a hell of a lot longer. It makes massive difference. It's not always about overheating but more about helping the auto last a lot longer.

Hi team, Would love to hear your opinion on my setup and if you think it’s okay. I have a 2023 DMAX, it’s a work/weekend car and has a 2 in lift with 32 inch tyres and a bullbar, canvas canopy to save weight. I’ve recently installed a trans cooler, it’s not your brand but another reputable brand (yours were out of stock and it was a time sensitive thing). Also have installed an auto lockup kit too. Now I tow a 1500kg work trailer and also live rural with a lot of hills around so I’m pushing the car between 100-110kph Before the cooler installed I was seeing trans temps up to 105+ degrees. Now with the cooler and lockup kit I still see temps over 90 after a few hill runs, temps do eventually come down but it seems to always only come back down to the coolant running temps (90-93 degrees) Now my questions are is that too hot?? Or does that seem pretty viable seeing as it’s towing a half decent trailer and there’s a lot of hills around. Also I have run the cooler through the heat exchanger that the dmax comes with from factory, some people say that maybe bypassing the heat exchanger will keep the temps lower? Sorry for the long comment but would love to know your opinions!! Cheers, Dan

First question is is it a twin cooler? we have noticed that the twin cooler works much better on this vehicle. No leave the heat exchange in place as we also run the original heat exchange with our cooler kit.

Hi Rod great info, I fitted a PWR auto cooler to my 2010 Colorado when I first purchased it, definitely agree that it makes a difference.I tow a camper trailer and when not towing and 4x4ing it is the best insurance in my opinion, Ive bypassed the radiator as I have the larger cooler that was available.in addition I am looking at putting heat shield(designed for hoses) over the return line, if you can comment on this from your professional advise would greatly appreciate.

I would be reconnecting the radiator as one cooler is not enough for the Colorado. Reconnect so flow goes though radiator first then the new cooler second. You just need to install flexible conduit to all the new cooler lines.

No, not at all Dino and we test the flow rates during the testing stage of development. The new Next Gens run at 6 litres per minute which is quite high in comparison to most others and when we do a deliberate restriction test, they still run at 6 litres per minute. We don’t continue to restrict but we still do all the tests so we fully understand.

Its getting up there in weight . The cooler when not towing has the trans at mid 60c, it was around 80c pre trans service and cooler fitment . Will be interesting to see how it performs as the hottest i have had the trans oil was 117c coming up the Adelaide hills after the V8 Supercars in December last year towing the van.

Great video. I have a 150 Prado 2.8 GD 6 speed. Does the cooler kit work in combo with the existing water cooler in the rad or is it bypassed completely? Enjoyed all the information in your video . Do you do a cooler for the NX 2016 Pajero. I noticed at 90000km when I drained the auto it was very dark in colour. Decided to do a full system flush ended up using 20 litres. I will now drop the oil on a regular basis. I don't tow a caravan at all just a regular 6×4 trailer to the tip now and again. I have a device that i can read transmission temperature on my phone. I live in the hills and noticed it reads around 90 C max at the top, naturally this may change a bit depending on ambient temperature. There's a air to air cooler fitted from factory and presume made to the Australian conditions however fitting a extra one would be of some benefit iam sure.

@WholesaleAutomatics
@WholesaleAutomatics 8 ай бұрын
As he mentioned it has certainly made a difference but as the 10 speed runs though a thermal valve it will still shut the cooling down until you get up to about 80C mark but the real difference is when you load the car right up and the temp rise quickly. The oil coolers will do a brilliant job of controlling this and he no longer sees the over 110c temp that he was before.

I had a faulty thermostat replaced in the coolant system And fitted one of your trans cooler Kits. My next trip temps in the trans didn’t get above 90’ and the coolant the max was around 100’ towing from Vic to Queensland. Definitely well Worth the money.
