Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great kzbin.infoUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

@Saa45MIV3 жыл бұрын
It’s not that it’s not enough.. in this clip the result would have been the same if he was shooting a .223, it’s when things don’t go perfect and you end up taking a quartering shot And the bullet has to pass through the shoulder to get to the vitals, that’s when the heavier calibers come into play.. I do however believe that bullet selection is almost more important than what caliber you are shooting.. you could be shooting a .30-378.. if the bullet flies apart on impact and doesn’t reach the vitals it’s not going to be very effective.
@DustinBaileyOutdoors3 жыл бұрын

I’m of the opinion you really need a bullet diameter >9mm (358) before it really matters on moose, and even then you can’t expect them to drop on the spot but generally speaking the distance they walk/time till they drop will be significantly shorter. Congrats to the harvest of a fine moose!

I think you did everything right, including the head shot. I think some guys will shy away from the headshot because they want the trophy. But I am all about the meat and if the first shot did not do it and a head shot will, then, so be it. And find a taxidermist who does good work. Besides, taxidermists don't actually mount the skull. The peel off the skin and put it on a plastic form. In fact, the only thing real on a trophy mount is the hide and horns. And yes, I have seen and read that taking down moose can take 2 or three shots. Ron Spomer hunted elk with a 7 mm Rem Mag and had to make three shots to bring that beast down. The first shot just ticked the moose off. I have read of Elmer Keith shooting a .333 OKH or a .35 Whelen and planting three shots and the beast still gets away, even if he traipsed around the side of the mountain and fell off. And I have seen Rob Arrington at deermeatfordinner bring down a moose with one shot from his 6.5 Creedmoor. That bull was quartering away, at the time, in dwindling daylight.

I'm not on here to be a hater. You did everything right, and I support what you do. A friend of mine just went to Newfoundland on a moose hunt. I loaded him some 168 grain Barnes TTSX bullets for his 308. Shot one that field dressed at over 850, 212 yard shot, and it dropped where it was standing. Like I said, I'm a big Hornady fan. I shoot the ELD-X out of my 300 Norma, and have taken a number of animals with the SST in various other calibers. I only made my comment on bullet choice based on my experience. The moose you shot probably would have tipped over without need for a follow up shot. Your shot placement was perfect. Have you considered trying the Norma Bondstrike 143gr in the PRC? I got a bunch of them fairly inexpensively ($54/100), after coming across them in forum discussion. Seems like they have a form factor similar to the 142 ABLR, but the construction is more like regular Accubond...open quick, but stay together and drive deep. I've been loading them for my wife's CVA Cascade in 6.5 PRC, right at 3k fps they give roughly 1/2 MOA pretty consistently. Wife wants to hunt elk, likes the PRC because it shoots flat and accurate, and with a muzzle brake, kicks about like my 6.5CM. I figured a bonded tipped bullet should give her the best chance to make it to the vitals even if the shot isn't a perfect broadside.

Shot placement looked textbook to me. First shot was def a double lung hit with, quite possibly, some fragments (or entire bullet) also hitting the aorta &or top of heart. Unless the bullet failed to mushroom &or fragment, the critter most likely would have collapsed relatively quickly due to internal hemorrhaging (again, due to shot location) and associated lack of O2 to the brain. I did see in another comment that they plan to switch to ELD-X next hunt, which would def bring it down relatively quickly (based on similar shot placement) even if no opportunity to follow-up shot.

I really can't see how that could have gone any better. Short of a good neck, or head shot, moose just don't seem to fall in their tracks. Regardless of what you shoot at them. I've seen two different bulls, absorb two shots each, from a 300 Win Mag and a 375 H&H, and a third one die more quickly to a short barrelled 308 Winchester. The first Win Mag shot took place at about 200 yards. The moose just stood there and made everyone think he'd been missed, but it was a good double lung with a Partition. He then casually walked about 20 yards, at which point he fell to the second shot. The 375 H&H shots were much closer, 40-50 yards. Those were similarly good hits, but the first one just seemed to piss him off, resulting in a partial charge. Moose are moose, I guess that's why we love'm!
@BrandonandStacyHunt2 жыл бұрын
Hey you didn’t hear? Anything less than a 300 win mag isn’t enough. 300 win mag drops em one shot every time!! At least that’s what I get told all the time. Truth be told shots in the vitals dropping any animal are rare! High shoulder next and head are the only way to get an animal to drop. It shocks the nervous system and lights out but I’ll take the vitals shot first every day of the week. Thanks for the comment.

I don’t believe in long range hunting game animals so I’d say for a shooter that knows what he’s doing 500 yards max. After 500 too much room for error in my opinion. It seems that the ELDM is a thin jacketed match bullet and the ELD-X is designed and marketed as a hunting round. It seems the ELD-X would be a much better choice for a large body animal. I would like your input on this please. Thanks for your time

@@F8lastcallcharger345 I did a ton of research on this when I first got my PRC. The eldx has slightly thicker jacket and interlocking ring otherwise construction is almost identical. At either rate not a bonded bullet. The general consensus I found was that the new ELDM was the old amax with the heat shield tip. The old amax was used extensively as a hunting bullet. This coupled with many success stories of people using the ELDM effectively persuaded me to try it. I went with it as my rifle shot it best, I don’t reload and PRC factory ammo is very limited. We’ve hit 4 bull moose and two bull elk nothing went farther than 30 yards, however I like to keep ethics in the forefront and I think I might just switch so eldx for peace of mind I’m doing everything I can to ensure it is as ethical as possible. And a bullet that holds together in my opinion would be the better choice. I’m not above admitting I might have made less than perfect decisions. All that said the bullet has killed every animal I’ve shot but I’ve yet to recover one leading me to believe it is fragmenting. I need to run some water jug tests on the two side by side.

Thank you for the response. I appreciate the data and it sounds like for just the deer in the southern US the ELDM will be fine for me. I don’t reload either but would love to have some 6.5 PRC in the Nosler Accubond or Partition but can never find it. I do have a Remington 700 long range chambered in 300 RUM for heavy work but it is a very heavy rifle compared to the Christensen Arms. I did recently purchase a Springfield Armory Waypoint and as much as I tried to find one in .308 I finally gave up and got the 6.5 Creedmoor. As my friend says, first world problems lol.

@@BrandonandStacyHunt I've seen a 123gr ELD-M take an Aoudad @200yds from a 6.5 Creedmoor. I was surprised. 1 shot kill. Went 20yds. I was backing up the client with a .338 Win Mag w/200gr SST's. I took a 29" Aoudad with that .338 Win Mag @250yds, double lung and it ran more than 50yds and I put another one through it on the run to be sure. Sometimes, things don't make sense. Too bad they don't make the Federal/Speer Trophy Bonded Tip in 6.5mm. It starts in .277 cal. I skipped the 6.5 PRC even though I really wanted one. And then Winchester/Browning made my thoughts reality with the 6.8 Western. Found out about it and instantly bought 360 rds of ammo.. Got one in an X-Bolt. I'll trade it on a Winchester M70 in 6.8 Western as soon as I see one. Nice shootin on the Moose. I was coaching as I watched Haha! 😬💭Don't try for the rib cage/lungs. It'll be a gut shot. Don't shoot him in the shoulder and waste all that meat! Shoot him in the neck! Good shot! Good shot. 👍👏👏👏👏👏 Side note: neck meat does make the best chili after you boil it for 4 hrs. Stays good in the crockpot for days.

Good shooting, nice to see patience for the first shot, waiting for the full broadside is always best. Was the second shot necessary? @BrandonandStacyHunt2 жыл бұрын
Moose seldom “drop” from shots to the vitals irregardless of caliber. First one would have done the job but figured I’d make it quicker. Went with neck on second as he was quartered and didn’t want to go through the shoulder. It was some quick and kind of just happened in split second decisions.

Always try to get one good lethal shot in there and then make as ethical as possible with a quick follow up. Head/neck can go very wrong especially at distance so like to be sure with a good one n there before I risk a head shot. Most animals, deer, elk, moose seldom drop on impact with a shot placed in vitals. Not saying it doesn’t happen. Irregardless of caliber you typically only see animals drop with high shoulder or neck shots that shock the nervous system so much it’s lights out. And of course head shots.

I do not hunt but I have witnessed animals being killed for food multiple times and for me to eat. As a young man my moms brother, my uncle that Is, raised beef, pork and rabbits on his five acre ranch on the outskirts of San Francisco Bay Area, up north in Vallejo ca. once a year my parents bought a whole beef from him for slaughter. It filled up our kitchen freezer and the bigger freezer in our garage. Kept meat on our table for about a whole year. It was good flavor too. Plus you know it was organic. All were grass fed along with some grain. One time I did a taste test. Went to my local Safeway grocery store. I had to purchase safeways best ground beef to match the natural flavor of my uncles beefs. Both were fried without any seasoning. You never knew where grocery beef originated from. I knew where my uncles came from and without any government interference. So I don’t hunt for meat but I didn’t always get it from a store either. The meat has to come from somewhere, so what difference if one hunts, raises it for slaughter or buys at the store? It the individuals preference, so quit harping on the hunters. Oh and while on my uncles ranch I would plink tin cans. Shooting IS fun.
