My dad and brother shoot the 270 wsm its an amazing cartridge. Ammo was scarce for a couple years but now its got a few options back on thr shelves of all the stuff you really need. Good review still dont see a nees for the creeds or prc rounds but some people do and that's the great thing about America you can like your stuff as I like mine

The also promise more than they can deliver. The 270 is better than the 6.5PRC in 95% of real world hunting scenarios. They could even get the 6.5 PRC to truly fit in a small action like Winchester did with the 6.8W

@phild9813
@phild9813 Ай бұрын
I disagree that the 6.8 is what the WSM should have been. Two completely different concepts of terminal bullet performance for them. When the WSMs were launched, speed and the concept of max point blank range was still being applied, making flatter shooting rounds at reasonable hunting ranges preferable. I would argue that most hunters today are better off with speedy rounds that shoot flatter out to 400 yards, coupled with controlled expansion bullets.
@JAKDRZR
@JAKDRZR Ай бұрын
@@phild9813 I agree. In my family and group of hunters I’m the only one with a scope with dialable turrets. Most guys I know don’t shoot farther then 400 yards ever and 97% of the time you can’t see farther then 200 yards in my area. Speed equals energy and a flatter easier shot.

I have a .270WSM and I love it. I have a load worked for it that shoots single hole groups at 100 yards at 3408 with the E-tip. I have a 150 grain partition load that does 3184 and will touch at 100. I find most Hornady loads to be anemic, they are very cautious with their loads. I use GRT for looking at loads and trying to predict what they will do and it always seems to say the loads are too hot, even though my load data always comes from a book or website of either a bullet or powder maker and are deemed safe.
@thebryguy96

Thanks for the honest comparison. I have GRT on my laptop and i can see from your comparison here, why i need to use it more often. The 270 wsm is solid but rarely seen these days. I have a 270 wby which has a tad more capacity but overall very similar velocities and both have slower twist barrels from the factory. The 6.8 western definitely is more efficient and should be a more popular cartridge than it is. The 6.5 prc is very popular and i feel a much better long range hunting cartridge than a 6.5 CM. Velocity matters.

I used to have a Savage 110 270 WSM in the early 2000’s. It was a 1.5 to 2 MOA rifle. Ammo availability became an issue so I traded it off for a Mauser 264 win mag. I bought a Tikka Roughtech 6.5 PRC last year. It is a 1/2 MOA rifle with Hornady Precision Hunter. I don’t notice any difference in killing power between the rounds. I have more confidence in the PRC because of the accuracy. I will keep using it unless ammo and reloading supplies become scarce.

As seen in the powder volume, the 270 WSM at 68.5 grains is indeed a magnum cartridge while the 6.5 PRC at 59.3 grains is more like a 6.5-06. Both are good cartridges, I have always considered the 6.5 PRC and its 338 RCM cases to be the updated version of the -06. I find it impressive that the PRC hangs in there with 9 grains less propellant.

I shot a 270 WSM for quite a while. Mostly 130 and 140 Accubonds. Did the trick very well. Went away from it because I never liked the RIFLE itself much. Always thought it was pretty underrated. Also had a 6.5 PRC for a while…. Like it a lot, sold it as well. To me, both cartridges solve a problem not many of us have. Don’t get me wrong, they’re fantastic and work very well on game. BUT, I have a 6.5 CM and a .300 win mag that are my “usuals” neither the .270 WSM or 6.5 PRC cartridges solver anything for big game hunting inside ~500 yards. If I want more than the creed, shoot the .300. Don’t need the .300? Creed does fine.

Great video. Im curious to see what your take is on comparing the 6.5prc vs 264 win mag!? It looks to me like the win mag beats it out by alot. It just boils downt to long action vs short action. And or new/fast twist vs old/slow. However if the win mag can still push 140-143gr fine through a 1 in 10 twist. The bullet length and twist argument should be basically even!? Again, nobody has a head to head comparison of the two. Thank you for the video. 👍

The more you dive into all these different cartridges you find that unless you go crazy over bore speed demon or super slow flat nose old time 30-30 type rounds there isn’t that much difference in them!! Take say 243 and run all the way through the reloading guide excluding the ultra mags nosler cartridges and a cpl of the weatherby cartridges there isn’t more than a cpl inches difference in the drop and drift from big to small!! You gain energy but not that much on drop!! People get so wrapped up in big BC numbers but shoot a 6.5 creedmoor at 2700 fps thinking they have something special when almost every round in the reloading guide will smoke it or run right on its ass out to 500 yards!! At the ranges that 90% of people should be shooting game it don’t make enough difference to worry about the bc of there crappy eldx bullet or the speed they can push! Pick a rifle that has enough energy to handle the game your hunting pick a good bullet and go hunting and stop worrying about all the other BS!! They can only make a cartridge shoot so fast or be so efficient and they haven’t made any real advancements with these new cartridges in the last 10 years like everyone thinks!! Do people not think that we haven’t had rifles made with fast twist barrels in 270 30-06 300 win and so on for as long as people have been building custom rifles!! Do people really think that we didn’t know 30 years ago that a heavier bullet carried better than the lighter ones!! Just because they didn’t make factory rifles with these twist to shoot those bullets did not mean they weren’t around!! They have suckered this crowd of people that think there getting something that wasn’t available until it was on the shelf at Cabelas or the local gun shop but they have always been available if you were smart enough to know how to get ahold of one!!

Huh, funny the 6.5 PRC pushing a 156 Berger, a bullet that's actually popular for this cartridge actually crushes the 270 at a thousand. 😂 1919 fps and 1276 for energy. A mil for wind hold.

Just tired of Hornady being so biased towards.277

Both will be gone in a decade or two. Hornady doesn't make the rifles but they sure are cluttering up the landscape with what should be wildcats. The result will be rifles with no ammo. Neither of these will make the cut. Accuracy is nothing new. In 1955 a 250 savage in a walnut stock with a barrel mounted Unertl shot a 5 shot group for the world record bench rest of .1057" Anyone who tells you a rifle cartridge is super accurate is blowing smoke up your ass hoping to sell you a new rifle you will not find ammo for 20 years from now. The old stand byes will still be around because there is 10Xor more rifles that have to be fed and they will end up being the winners as it has always been. Marketing gimmicks of selling gullible Millennials will never sell enough for viability. Heck, it took Remington 40 years to legitimize the 22/250 as a factory load. BTW the 22/250 set the world record in 1955 with a 5 shot group of .3896" Beat those apples today with Hornady's madness of a Cartridge of the month club for Millennials. For those who buy into the marketer's hype will find it doesn't end well at all.

Yeah, Hornady is full of shit most of the time. They want to pad and beef up the specs on the cartridges they created, and downplay the cartridges that actually beat theirs
