Way back in 1967 a Remington 600 was displayed as the big buck prize, announced in assembly at my Utah high school. I don’t remember how that the rifle was chambered, possibly 6.5 mm or .350 Rem. Needless to say, I didn’t win the prize, but the memory of the announcement and the display of the rifle in the school’s trophy case is a reminder of a better era

When I was in high school in the mid 90’s in KY the shop teacher would brings his rifles and shotguns (depending upon what was in season) to class and clean them. My only experience with the 6.5 Remington Mag was with the 673 guide gun that came out in 2004. First three shots... I could cover with a dime. That was with Remington 120 grain factory ammo. No recoil not really loud either... but the rifle was 7 and 1/2 pounds with a heavy contour 22 inch barrel. The only issue was the ammo dried up due to no one buying the rifles. Which in my opinion were beautiful ❤️ I already had a 350 Remington Mag in the Remington 700 classic. Which was another beautiful rifle. Shot moa with Remington factory 200 grain ammo. I did have a friend reload me 225 grain nosler partitions for it. After I bought the dies bullets and powder. These two were eventually sold off due to separation/divorce. Which is a common thing. I figured I'll replace them one day... doesn't happen! I ended up with a 358 Winchester and a 7mm-08 Remington nowadays... and I'm quite pleased 😄 Still miss those Remington's though

@@RonSpomerOutdoorsLOL, Ron, honestly, your smile and humble knowledge shines through all of your presentations. I know how much hard work it is,with all of life's responsibilities, to create such compelling,informative,and knowledgeable content. It is appreciated. I have mostly hunted since a teenager, the millions of beautiful acres comprising the Adirondack & Catskill mountains of NYS. I have come to appreciate the maneuverability of a short barreled,short action,accurate,light weight ,bolt action rifle (or Savage 99-lever etc)in the dense,deep ,mountainous,timber of the Northeast. There is much to be said for an accurate, light weight,short barreled bolt action(or lever) in ,308 Win,7mm-08 Rem,.284 Win.6.5 CM,260 Rem,maybe 45/70 in Brown Bear country,etc. Most shots at game I trust,are statistically well under 300 yards,imo,even possibly at west, despite some Hunters maybe with Walter Mitty ,Carlos Hathcock aspirations. It is my position,that the velocity lost by attenuated barrel length at real world distances,is well within acceptable energy/drop parameters, and much is to be gained in affording rapid presentation and comfort in negotiating the limiting confines of deep woods or vehicular constraints where legal. Winddrift at long ranges,makes even the most competent hunter,with the finest in a rifle/cartridge/ platform/scope/practice/cartridge,replete with outstanding BC,etc, enter into a realm of problematic hunting ethics. I feel ethically, no matter the competence of the hunter/marksman,personally,I feel a quarter of mile-440 yards,is a good limit for responsibly shooting at and harvesting game with a suitable caliber and appropriate sight in and Field type practice if one can reliably hit a designated game specific target size at said range. ID Engineer Mike at the fledgling HUNT SIMPLE KZbin channel seems to agree and other responsible hunters. Like you and I Ron, he uses vast personal empirical hunting experience, awareness of personal confirmation bias/the Scientific Method,and limited data points in arriving at a still,open mind position,on caliber,cartridge,barrel length,load,etc. Good men can disagree in an enjoyable forum of civil discourse searching for truth. Kindly send my best to Betsy. It makes me smile that you have found each other for eternity. Tell Covey she is a good girl for me. I have seen much in my life, but when I see a hardened Green Beret start to cry in a History documentary relating how his WarDog K9 grabbed him by his combat harness to drag him out of withering enemy machine gun fire,it tests the limits of my composure. I am really enjoying the predictable 6.5 PRC round.. raw parts are still a little hard to come by, so, place your orders ahead of time, before you need the raw materials, but other then that.. the cost of the raw building materials, mainly the projectiles, which are actually not to hard to come by, the precision factor is pretty mind blowing.. My pursuit of PRS, I am glad I went this route with the 6.5 PRC. .. Never mind how grumpy I get looking at the shelves, and can always see 6.5 weatherby brass, which I don't need..lol.. But, as we speak, there are a total of 5 brass stampers now making 6.5 PRC brass.. and we are all just waiting for the delivery dates to be fulfilled.. Most of those manufactures, on their websites, have an email "notify me" sign up.. so jump on that to get your supply up to par for your needs.. Good luck. be safe

Many years ago I had one made up with a 24” barrel. It’s was a very flat shooter. The issue I had with it was not much of a bullet selection compared to other bullet calibers. The 220 swift was a favorite back in the day for rock chucks. What I think the major issue was not the 6.5 or the 350 rounds but the 600/660 carbines. They had a major recall a few years after release of the firing pin releasing without a trigger pull or the action locked. I had it happen on a 660 Remington 350. I was closing the bolt and i went off. The bolt was barely locked. I contacted Remington and they had me send the carbine to them. I think I was one of the first to report the issue.

Remington made a limited number of BDLs in both 350 rem mag and 6.5 rem mag. Unfortunately it was too late to keep them in production. The Blue Book says there were a little over 1500 made. I would imagine out of that number, the most made in 6.5 rem mag. There are probably a lot fewer BDLs in that caliber due to people rebarreling the rifles to something more popular after ammo became hard to find. I have a BDL and love it! I dont reload for it and most of the Remington ammo that you can find are 120 gr due to the overall length with anything heavier vs the length of the short action in the BDL.

I might me incorrect, but I have read that the Remington 600 and 660's were introduced to use left over receivers and bolts from the previous XP-100 Remington bolt action handguns introduced for the silhouette shooter. I have a model 600 in .243 Win. Just the perfect rifle for medium size deer! They were only $99 in the early 70's, with the magnums (6.5 & .350) priced at $149! The prices are way up there now and have a cult like following today. They were lightweight guns well ahead of their time..!👍

I owned a .350 mag I bought around 89-90 like new for $250. I shot it a bit when I first got it but even then ammo wasn't common and that thing was brutal to shoot just for fun. I sold it in the early 2000's for $1350 and still kick myself today. I would love to someday own one in 6.5! These things are light, accurate and as handy a rifle as I've ever shot! I even like the dogleg bolt handle and the aesthetics of these rifles! I hope to someday build one in .338 federal as well as .260 remand 7mm-08. The 6mm has been my go to and truck gun as long as I can remember. It outpaces the .243, shoots 1"@ 100yds with several loads and has done everything I've ever asked of it.

@tplyons54593 жыл бұрын
@@17quarters48 The Mauser was the 1924 Radam made in Poland. Full loads are not the accurate ones in general plus the short neck means the bullet is seated far into the case which further reduces the amount of powder. Thecase capacity tests I made back in 1970 show it is basically a 6.5-06 and the 350RM is a 35 Wheelen.

If it's the modern 6.5 Remington Mag then it's a great cartridge. Everything I've read leads me to the PRC... even more so than the 6.8 western. However.. the older I get I question another firearm... but as you already know... there's always room for another :)
@blackie1of43 жыл бұрын
Also . Check into the 280AI... you could shoot booth 280 Remington and the 280 AI. It's pretty much ballistically the same as the PRC... long action though. However .. ammo will always be available due to the 30-06 and the 270

@@blackie1of4 I have a Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in .280 Remington . I am aware that the .280 AI chamber can accommodate both standard.280 Remington and the .280 AI . Although, realistically, a good hand loaded .280 Remington only falls behind the .280 AI by a mere 50 fps ( only 100 fps gain in the AI verses the standard factory.280 Remington load ) The short action 6.5 PRC just has an alluring appeal for some reason . Like you say , always room for another !

@@NorthwoodsNomad Nice! Always wanted a Winchester model 70 featherweight... I'm sure she's a beauty 😊 With all the recent rounds coming out I'd choose the PRC as well. I'm a short action fanatic though. My brother's looking for a new rifle for western hunting. I recommend the 6.5 PRC to him. Hopefully he gets one so I can try his out :)
@NorthwoodsNomad3 жыл бұрын
@@blackie1of4 The Model 70 Featherweight is a sweet rifle ! Well balanced , quick handling , quality craftsmanship precision performance, the bolt action is buttery smooth ( controlled round feed ) It is said to be a better version of the ‘ pre 64 ‘ original model 70 rifles, I believe solely due to the better quality of materials and metallurgy , as well as way better triggers today than what was available in the 1960’s … nice Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad too , just all around better materials and they use the same pre 64 actions that are so revered for their smooth and reliable functioning . I love the schnabel fore end and checkering on the pistol grip and fore end too . What is so unique about it is , the .280 Remington caliber in itself . It is proprietary to Remington, and thereby not a standard chambering in the Winchester line of rifle models . The last time Winchester ran a production run of .280 Remington rifles was back in the early 1960’s shortly after the cartridge was introduced. They were very limited in production, and the few that were available went out the door quickly. Now Winchester ran another production run of the .280 Remington chambered in this Model 70 Featherweight in 2015 . Again, a very limited production run as not many people express interest in the .280 Remington cartridge ( largely because they just don’t know the true characteristics and performance that it offers ) So , it is a rare rifle and will hold it’s value better than other common standard cartridge productions . My one and only concern was the twist ( 1 in 10 ) it should have been made with a 1 in 9 to handle the heavy 165-175 grain loads , but it does stabilize up to 165 grain no problems . I shoot nothing but 140 grain Corbon DPX solid copper (3,000 fps) , and the Federal 150 grain Nosler Partitions ( 2,890) fps) Both will handle anything including elk , moose , caribou and black bear . What more do I really need other than other flavors of cartridges to tickle my fancy ? “ The Rifleman’s Rifle “ If you’re looking to pick one up , there are still some available brand new in the box , chambered in .280 Remington, but only a few . The 6.5 PRC in this Model 70 Featherweight would be a nice package , nice little mountain rifle !

If I had a 6.5 Rem Mag, I'd not lose any sleep thinking about performance gains of the others. I do like the PRC tho... The Noslers are just wat too over the top, but the 28 Nosler, in my opinion, is about as good as it gets in that family.

Another nice video Ron. I’m afraid in the early 1980’s I caught Magnum fever and sold a .270 Win Model 70 and picked up a .264 Win Mag in a Model 70 and I have yet to burn out its barrel hunting Big Game. Form the beginning I use Sierra 120gr and 140gr Gamekings while they worked I just wasn’t there yet then went to Nosler 120 SP then BT when it came out and hunted with it for Deer & Antelope and it was great most of the time. But when I went for Caribou and went to Nosler 130gr AB at just over 3200FPS and groups under .7 inch at 100 yards and a decent BC it’s flat shooting enough for Me. Where do I see the 6.5mm as Perfect for Caribou and Deer & Antelope, but to much for Coyotes.

They may not be as flashy as some of the othere mentioned but they are incredibly effective on game and toting the Mannlicher in the field can only be described as heaven on earth.

I don't think it was a bad round. I think remington marketing was the big problem with it the 244,280,350,and 8mm rem. They were all good rifles but not introduced right.
@TexanUSMC80893 жыл бұрын
Remington really messed up a lot of cartridges. Winchester made the 270 and Remington made the 280. The 280 is actually a better cartridge, but remington messed it up by introducing it in the wrong rifle, again. The 264 Win Mag isn't dead though. Some people still shoot it and several companies make ammo for it. For shorter ranges the 6.5CM is great, and for longer ranges the 6.5PRC is great. I also shoot my 6.5-06 a lot. It's a great cartridge for mid size bullets, larger than the 25-06 and better bullet selection than the 270. 120-140gr bullet class.

Ron, you said in '66 Winchester didn't have a short action. So is the .243 M70 my Dad bought in '56 a standard length action? He also bought a pair of Mohawks, one in .222 Rem and one in .243 Win. All us kids learned to shoot with the .222 and then all took deer and antelope with the .243. He cut one stock to fit tweens and kept the other full length.
@RonSpomerOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, Capt., that '56 M70 would have to be a standard length action. They plugged the back of the magazine with a half-inch or so long block. Sauer and others still do this with some rifles.

Now we are swimming in the same pond, the 6.5 zoo Just like I commented a couple days ago too much to choose from.The marketing again is too much to choose from. It has to be supported by factory ammo and re -loaders get the scoop before they buy, so they pick the PRC or 284 case.Everybody else buys the creedmore . And that said we haven't covered half of it .The lack of informing people what has been developed for an AR platform goes unsaid or at least isn't said enough that people actually hear it.
