That watermelon girl could've been from Eastern Europe actually. Everyone there slaps and knocks on watermelons to see if they are fresh and ripe enough as well - they are seasonal over there and you don't want to buy a bad one, or one that hasn't ripened yet and tastes like water (half the fun of summer there is eating watermelons and picking out the sweetest ones - and eating them outside...)
