Me too, unfortunately two of the 3 I had were complete junk. The block was cracked on one around the webbing and the crank broke on the other one ruining the block.

I actually bought the Detroit Green before I made the video but I decided not to go all green on it. I might paint the valve covers and intake Detroit Green but I haven't decided yet.

Cracks between valves were a relatively easy fix on old 6.2 heads… involves reaming coolant passage and driving in a length of valve guide ( with sealer). Effective, permanent and cheap. I always use brass freeze plugs… not expensive

Yeah, I probably should have just ran them.

@@ArrowsGarage well if they failed it could’ve been catastrophic failure with Hydro lock and everything else problems big problems so they either have to be repaired or replaced course back in the day. Some people pushed their luck and got away with it.

Glad to see more people doing garage builds! One thing I ran into on my last build with plastigauge, and to be clear, this is a pretty unusual situation... I had no shop and needed to get the motor done so I was forced to do it in the middle of winter. I used a cheap 'carport' tent, which was fine except it was damn cold which affected the plastigauge results. Since it's just a wax compound, the cold wouldn't allow it to take proper shape so I had to mike everything. Temperature matters!

They are telling you bullshit at the shop. Crack repaired heads are better then new, because they will never crack again with the sleeve they put in there. first I was paying the machine-shop $20 / crack to fix them. Then I bought a box of 100 sleeves and was doing it myself for pennies. I have rebuilt near 100 6.5 engines and was selling them on ebay for 10 years for $3000. The webbing crack can also be fixed, by JB welding the cap bolts into the engine. The JB weld will stop the crack from progressing. You never going to take it apart, but that rebuilt engine can run for 500,000 miles. By that time they will all be obsolete. And you will be smelling the flowers from underneath. Also one advice on the cap bolts, do not tighten them to spec. Tighten them to 10% under spec. Because that is what cracks the block. The factory spec. is too tight for how much material there is. Also they have lowered the material quality when going from the 6.2 to the 6.5 and neglected to reduce the spec. on the bolts accordingly. That is GM engineering for you.

so…very nice video! curious if your using TTY bolts…as you cant really reuse once they are fully torqued. i just did new rod bearings…and good bolts very very hard to find and expensive-ARP doesn’t even make…i would want to be .0025-.0035. .002 is min clearance range…and have seen too many slipped bearings when they are really tight…GM manual specifies no oil film or grease when plasti-gaging main bearings..ie dry…

@ArrowsGarage

I won't try it. You would end up welding the surface and the crack is all w the way through. Plus if you have a block that is prone to cracking why even risk it.
