My truck has been a nightmare,just went through rebuilding the motor due to spun bearing now I'm having fuel issues someone else put the fuel pump in and now I have to go through the whole fuel system and your video is hands down the best one I've found trust me I've seen a lot,I know the whole history of this motor , and I'm well on my way to becoming a diesel mechanic. Thanks for the Video. I bought a 98 & 94 Cheyanne 3500 HD. Both need a lot of work and your videos are a big help. I use to work for Detroit Diesel rebuilding 8-V 92's and 71's & 60 series. 6.5's are a total different Motor. The block looks like a big block gas engine to me. Thanks again.

Thank you for taking the time to watch man, I appreciate it 👍 love the old 71's just a nostalgic motor for sure, and the 12.7L 60series are great, 14L as well. 6.5l is a totally different beast for sure 395 cubic inches of indirect injection, clangy, leaky beauty hahaha

Had to replace the o ring in optical sensor because I saw a leak then I saw a leak in the fuel shutoff relay waiting to replace that. I believe this happened because I put in a new fuel tank and pickup with new lines up to the ffm and increased fuel line size all the way to the injection pump. It took me so long to do because I'm old and by my self I think the o rings dried out because the fuel was drained from the system. Great video's keep it up. 99 Suburban Feed the Beast New ffm to match feed the beast. Quadstar metrim rod pickup New fuel tank and lines

ALJO, Thanks Jesse for many questioned answered. I have a 95 6.5 on a K2500 frame. I had heating problems, both heads had cracks in them. This engine was replaced about 40 kmiles ago. I have had this truck since Oct 2002. It has had some problems since Oct 2005. I have just replaced both heads with new heads from a E-Bay source from Kannapolis, NC. $437.00 each. have it back together and no fuel from the Injector pump. it squirted one time on #3 and that is all. I have a new PMD that will be here Wed. the 3rd of Aug. The engine was not having any running problems except for the overheating. The fan on this doesn't turn on until 210 degrees and that is a problem when I tow. Haven't checked codes but that is next. Thanks for very good videos !!.

Great job on videos, I’m new on your sight and I have a new truck with a surge upon acceleration cold only
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 7 ай бұрын
Thanks man, I appreciate it. A surge at acceleration while the engine is cold is most related to the cold start function and timing. When the engine is cold, the ECU in conjunction with the engine temp sensor and the injection pump, Increases the timing of the injection pump electronically in order to bring the engine up to optimal running temp faster and once the engine is at or above 180 degrees it will retard the timing back to normal. What may be happening is that the injection pump is slightly out of time and is causing a studder at cold but just enough in time to run correctly once the engine is warmed up. By chance do you know of the injection pump ever being replaced?

Hey there Tyler, thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch the videos man I do greatly appreciate it. And absolutely any mod that involves keeping the injection pump properly fed is definitely a mod I would recommend. It'll prevent injection pump catastrophe, help keep it well lubricated and fed and overall prolong the longevity of your injection pump added that you do away with the stock lift pump and later go with an aftermarket one as well 👍

I'm still chasing a drivability issue after new LP and feed line, what would cause/how does the return line clog? Could I check for that, by letting the lift pump prime and disconnecting the return to see if I have flow? I assume with the engine off once it has prime that the fuel just bypasses back through the return?

What kind of replacement fuel lines did you use on your truck? Someone told me that you had to use a special kind for diesel or they deteriorate from the inside over time. I didn’t find much discussion about this except that you shouldn’t use regular neoprene lines. Thanks in advance!

Great learning tool. I'm a real amateur and you taught me so much. I have an 03 Workhorse with a 6.5. I bought it non running. Added a new FPD on an extension mounted in front of radiator. Yesterday I relocated it back to the original location (on top the intake) where it originally causes overheating. However I'm worried about it overheating again. I'm considering adding duct work and fan from front to the fpd on top the intake. Any suggestions?

I would get a new extension harness with a heat sink and mount it down behind the bumper, that would be the coolest place for it.

FWIW, I've had a couple 6.5's. Never relocated the PMD and never had an issue. I don't run the engine cover, which seems like it would trap heat in the area of the PMD. I wonder how many PMD issues were caused by the cover and perhaps a fan clutch that was not working well...

Potentially, not 100% sure but I would imagine the truck would have a difficult time monitoring fuel delivery through the RPM range and shift points. Considering those wiring harnesses on these truck do require proper grounding and if the plugs aren't going to anything anymore than I'd say its likely.

I just got a 2003 6.5 old USPS step van and one thing it does is sort of stutter while driving and the engine has even shut off on it's own while driving a couple of times. The stutter or hiccup is usually going over 40+mph and then it suddenly stops accelerating for an instant or even a couple of seconds. It's random as to when it happens, but one stutter is usually followed by 2 or more. The times it shut off on it's own were followed by really low power. But after it shut off I was able to restart it no problem. I got the codes P0216 and P1216. Any ideas? It has a new lift pump, fuel filter, and air filter. Thanks for breaking down the fuel system.

Tanks Jesse. I have a question for you: I had to change the glow plugs and repair the glow plugs wiring on my 94 Silverado K-2500 and I decided to replace the injectors at the same time. It has 210,000kms and was running good on 8 cylinders and I changed them has preventive maintenance. I bought 8 brand new Bosch injectors. So now I hear a combustion knock at idle and it seems to be on only one cylinder. It was not like that before the job. And beleive me, it's a combustion knock, not anything mechanical. But as soon as I increase the RPM and only by a couple hundered the knock stop. It happen only at low idle. I got very good quality fuel, and no code except code 12 that means no code. No engine shaking at all, runs evenly on 8. I was worring about maybe a particules of dirt went inside the injectors when I reconnecte the lines but it runs well. Do you have a clue?? Tanks a lot for your help!!
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Dennis, so what may be happening in a run into this a few times is that where you put new injectors on with all new tolerances, new spring tensions, so on and so forth. And where the injection pump has been on the truck potentially since 1994, the pump itself has more wear and tear on it than the injectors. Well maybe happening is the pump, though it may have been able to make enough pressure for the old injectors, might not be enough in order to get the new injectors to fire off properly.

Hey man, Could be early signs of the optical sensor going out, or if you have an optical sensor filter harness it could be starting to fail as well. Dirty fuel can cause the code if there is and debris getting in-between the optical sensor and the pickup ring inside the injection pump.

You will need to take the feed line off the top of the injection pump from the lift pump and install an inline pressure gauge. That would be the most accurate place in order to get a reading directly at the injection pump.

Trying to figure out some of the routing, the little rubber lines off the injectors all join on the small steel lines , then are conjoined and go right back to the tank? no other steps? Just need to know when I install my aftermarket filtration setup to replace the stock FFM
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, all of the little rubber return lines go from inject to injector then to a hard line shaped like a big t up to the front of the motor. The hard line goes under the intake to the back of the motor then connects to a runner line that dips between the cab and the block, then back to a hard line that leads to the tank.

Hey Jesse! I have a 1994 K2500 that is all original. It also has a lot of problems with the engine. A friend said, since I have to get a new or reman motor, to go with the Duramax LB7, which is about the same cost for the long block...I've read a lot about the Detroit Diesels having block cracks, crank breaks, and DS4 issues. I'm 62, Disabled Vet, and I still do all my own work...I'm wanting to build this as my last truck that will actually outlive me...what do you recommend?
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there Phil, I see the dilemma that you're running into and and all actuality I would weigh the pros in the cons. The 65 is reliable but it does suffer from the dreaded main web cracking issues no matter which block you go with, it's cheap and easy to fix and it has enough power to get the job done. Doing an lb7 swap you'd have to take into consideration that it will be more expensive to fix any parts that will break, you'll have to consider getting good injectors because the lb7 unfortunately was bad about the injectors but a good set of Bosch will really bring me motor around. There will definitely be some modification where the Duramax was never equipped for the GMT 400 platform, wiring, remembering the VIN to be able to order parts properly for the engine, so on and so forth. All of that aside the lb7 is a great motor and has awesome power, definitely more power than a 65 stock for sure. If it were me in all honesty if you're wanting to keep the truck I would just put it right back to stock and run the wheels off it, or fix it and sell it and buy a Duramax. Unless you were able to take on the task of swapping then I would say go for the swap the GMT 400 trucks are a solid platform and the lb7 Duramax is a solid engine and would definitely serve whatever purpose you wanted it to serve well. But I would just weigh the options as far as what are you going to do with the truck is it worth it for you to do the swap stuff like that. I know I'm not much helping making this decision but I hope that was more or less the answer you were looking for. 👍

Where to get marine injectors I have a 1998 gmc 6.5 and it takes for ever for it to start everyone tells me it's my injection pump it's very hard to start

Quadstar tuning I believe has them. But I wouldn't put it past the IP or PMD starting to go out. Check and see if the're any codes available and go from there.

Hey jesse big fan of the channel. Having some fueling problems with my 96 k3500 wondering if you could give me any wisdom. I hot wired the fuel shut off and lift pump and I’m having an issue with it firing and shutting right back off. If i bleed the system at the valve on top of the water neck it’ll run for about 5 seconds and then goes back to only running for about a second maybe 2. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hey man, may I ask why you hotwired the shut off? was it not working or did you do it as a diag feature?

I havw a 95 GMC just put in new reman working great but keeps stuttering and shutting off on me. Today i replaced the lift pump remote pmd and installed secondary fuel filter but have same issue. After watching ur vid I'm thinking it's the injector pump or oil pres switch or crank shaft sensor. What u say? Thanks love ur vids on the 6.5

I bought myself a step van with 6.5L in it it a non turbo version. However when I bought it there was a water in the tank from sitting too long. So I dropped the tank. Installed the airdog with sump. New lines. The motor got 10k miles on it after rebuild. The problem that I have is it starts and idles perfect until it gets to the normal running temp about 190 as soon as it hits that temp all of the sudden it start spitting and puffing and just dies afterwards. I replaced PMD and moved it up front. But it does the same thing. Runs fine and clean while cold and as soon as the temp gets to 190 it’s does it again I do have code PO251 . on it but I can’t figure it out. Is it a high pressure fuel pump? Any suggestions?
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
Most likely the injection pump, this is going to sound strange as hell, but next time you run it up to temp, poor cold water directly onto the injection pump and see if it stops the issue even for a moment.

@@JessePelkey1 thank you for reply. I did order shut off solenoid before I came across ur video and it just came in the mail today to try that first but I will try the cold water option as well to make sure. There was a lot of water in the tank and some rust as well before I got to cleat it all and installed airdog2 but the damage was already done now I got to find the problem since I am doing conversion from van into rv and I need it fixed. I runs clean and idles clean starts right up but as soon as it get warm it dies. When it was cold during the winter I couldn’t even tell that it had that issue I started from time to time to charge the battery’s and let it idle for about 20 min but now when it’s hot outside in 90s it runs for 5-10 min great and then all of the sudden seems like one or more cylinders dies and then whole engine just dies and won’t start until it cools off.

All right back to what I said earlier I just sent a reply about what you were doing I replaced the lift pump I had air in the system truck starts right up in the morning but once it gets hot it's hard to start again. Now if I turn the key on and off a few times or if the engine cool it will start with no problem but with the engine hot it sounds like it's not getting any fuel ??
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
Good possibility unfortunately injection pump, there's a quick little "test" you can see about doing once the engine gets hot, poor cold water directly on the injection pump and see if it fires right up. If it does unfortunately it's the injection pump in the internals are just wore out to where the heat expands the internals of the pump not allowing it to make pressure properly

You should just be able to put a socket and ratchet on it and spin it radio. Is it just not wanting to budge or is it something else?

It should only run during the glow plug cycle then once the truck is running. 20 seconds is pretty normal

It is too bad GM didn't hire you to design the 6.5 liter diesel engine in the first place, if they had, all of these modifications would not be necessary.
