A quick overview of what problems you may run into when increasing the boost on your factor GM turbo, how to visually inspect a turbo, and what you have to do in order to increase the boost on you 6.5l turbo diesel.
Now yall will finally understand what I mean when I say my turbo is shot. I have been rolling around with this turbo on my truck for about a year and a half (dont do that) but it is very clear that I need a new turbo.
PLEASE! Feel free to get ahold of me anytime with any questions, comments or concerns 👍

Im a mechanic myself and im currently doing an injection pump on a 97 gmc tow truck with a 6.5, i appreciate your knowledge and willingness to share so im gonna share some of mine for your dirty secrets confession about your turbo. I've been a mechanic for 25+yrs and im trained in not just automotive, im also trained in small engines and commercial industrial diesel repairs(i get bored easily and constantly like challenges). And in my years and professions I was taught one of the most crucial things a mechanic needs to know. Customers should always be told "Do as i inform, NOT as i do", because the most common misconception Customers make is thinking, oh he/she's a mechanic so everything they own must be in tip top shape, BULLSH*T. Nothing a mechanic owns is ever in tip top shape and half the time it's not even fixed right because it's ours and we know what we'll deal with if it breaks again. And the major reasons for this is because we're always fixing everyone else crap and being haggled down to peanuts to do it so we never have the time or the money to do it. So if we got the time, we're broke, and if we got the money, we're busy(also no real mechanic is gonna take a pride hit to pay someone else to do it for us, not to mention be judged for state of the vehicle or as said before what we jerry rigged to keep it going lmao😂) Keep up the good work and remember. Mechanic don't lead by example with their vehicles, they prove how much crap theyll live with and just drive them.

I couldn't agree with you more brother, and thank you for sharing. As a Mechanic that has been doing this work professionally for the last 10 years. I was given the best explanation of why this is and find it more true every day. He said "mechanics vehicles are more often than not the most ugly, bubble gummed together vehicles on the road because, we are so tire form working on everyone elses broken things that we dont have the time, energy or or want to work on our own."

Merci Jessy! I have installed a boost gage and get no boost at all. Disconnect at intake plenum and blowed air to verify if gage was working and it did. My truck runs good but going up steep hill slows down(leak of power). Did verify if turbo compressor wheel turn and it does. Original turbo 308 miles. Got a modify waste gate like yours but didn't put on yet. Jessy, realy plaisant watching your videos. Denis

Hey Dennis is there any way to tighten the spring of the wastegate? If so that may be the issue, tighten the spring and slow increments taking it for test drives in between tightening sequences and see if the boost actually comes up.

Another good one, Jesse. I'm currently in the middle of swapping out injectors, glow plugs, and intakes to delete the egr. Just a heads up for those doing similar work, be prepared to spend days doing it rather than hours. Breaking old brittle parts, that have to be ordered, seems to be part of the process as the typical parts store carries very little when it comes to a vehicle that is approaching 30 years of age. The joy of owning an antique. 😁

@@JessePelkey1 It's turning into a marathon. Got all the injectors and glow plugs replaced. Broke the transmission dipstick tube, the temp sensor for the ecu was brittle and broke, the belt tensioner needed replacing, the guy working on it suggested replacing the glow plug controller since I have a new harness and the snap in connector for the upper coolant pipe started leaking as soon as it was moved. Had to order parts so now it will be next weekend, maybe, before he can get back in it. Parts have to get here first but at least I found someone who knows his way around the 6.5 and willing to work around the delays. Hope he remembers where everything goes. 😆

Hi Jesse: Thanks for being Awesome. I'm learning a lot, and really appreciate your humor and attitude. I've got a '96 2 door Tahoe with the 6.5 and it started out awesome and now a year or two later not so much. No power, went from 20 to 14 mpg, and starts a little less immediately. Only 100,000 miles on it. I do think I got a bad tank of fuel about the same time performance fell off. I've kept up on maintenance, just did a lift pump and PMD and am curious about going to the early non-electronic injection pump. I would love to see a video on that swap, going from electronic to mechanical. I'm going to pull down the turbo for inspection when it stops raining. Also intending to give it fresh injectors and glow plugs.... Any suggestions about the loss of power? Places to look, things to consider?

Hey man, Thank you for watching and your kind words. I do greatly appreciate it. As far as the low power/ sluggish running issue you are currently having, I would definitely check the turbo for any play as well as the vacuum pump if it is still hooked up. If the vacuum pump is still hooked up I would recommend either deleting it entirely or at the very least installing a manual waste gate on the turbo. Also I would ask if you have any codes stored in the ECU that are currently not throwing a check engine light.

First thanks for all your videos and giving your knowledge on the 6.5. I have a 94 k3500 dually 4 door. I bought it with only 6400 miles. It now only has 6900. I have done the 3 inch down to 4 all the way back. Quadstar full flow intake cold air filter. Airdog 4g lift pump with Quadstar fsu. New 35 gallon fuel tank 1/2 inch line all the way to feed the beast mod. And manually app waste gate control on a gm 4. Now I'm planning on Quadstar tuner like the malty tuner. Pluse a new 54 or super 60. And advice on tuning other then calling Quadstar. Can I just tell them I want more out of my stock engin and they send me a tuner that will do that. Either way could you go over your experience with buying a tuner and options you have. And things to look for. Thaks again. Keep making 6.5 videos they are really helping. Bill.

Got the 6.5 running with the pump you sent me , thank you again so much you are awesome i learned a lot about these 6.5s some good but mostly all the bad ..so much for Pensacola diesel and their b's lies and theorys that it was me and my truck that had the problem. They told me they were going to refund me my 500 two days later there was 500 in my account then it was gone a day later ! They used my account number to get a personal loan in my name for 500.00 a loan i never authorized ! Real great people the fbi traced it to a computer address in pensacola florida ! Scam artists is what they are.. It ran for 5 minutes on its own I gave it throttle and it died ! I checked everything there was to check turned the key and the lift pump mysteriously stopped priming and glow plugs wouldnt heat .? Not sure what was up but i checked the fuel shutoff solenoid and there was zero power going to the fuel shutoff solenoid as well , I went through all the fuses and found the glow plug fuse blown. ? Does the glow plug fuse run the fss and the lift pump ? Not sure but I replaced it gonna look into it more tomorrow but I've gone through and done about everything and anything imaginable to this truck . Any ideas other than a case of dynamite ?

Check your oil pressure switch.The transfer pump gets power while you are cranking, then once oil pressure builds to about 4 psi the contacts in the oil pressure switch close and the switch powers the control relay for transfer pump. You should also get a voltmeter and measure voltage at the transfer pump. Be sure you have good voltage and good ground in the circuit. Mine had 12 volts power, was working, but would not provide enough volume. Rock Auto has replacement. Be sure to also change out your fuel filter and clean the filter housing.Fill the housing up 1/2 way with fuel then install the filter. You can bypass oil pressure switch (AS TEST only) by jumpering orange wire to grey wire. Pump should run at all times and provide fuel to filter. This circuit is hot 12 volts at all times. Be sure to reconnect wiring back to original after the test.

@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris, and to answer your question, best way to measure the boost is to install a manual boost guage directly in the top of the intake horn or intake elbow. With a manual wastegate you could be able to tighten the adjustment on the spring to increase boost or back off the tension to decrease the boost.

So I have two 6.5s and run them at about 14 psi of boost but after that at 15 psi they both seem to cut power and then when boost drops they pick up again. One of the 6.5s has a hx35 on it and It still cuts out and in. Is that the turbo or does the stock fuel system not provide enough fuel? Actually my 6.5 with the stock turbo has a upgraded fuel pump so there it might be the turbo and the other one has the oem fuel pump yet, I know I need to upgrade it, but do you think that would solve the problem for the 6.5 with the hx35?

Tank you for all the informations you give us, really appreciate. Do you at how much pressure you can go without an inter-cooler?? Because you can't boost the manifold pressure for ever cause what you gain in pressure you loose it in density due to the heat generated by the compress air. At a certain point you don't put more air into the cylinders even if you increase the pressure and you get all the problems crated by an too hot intake air. Also I beg you not to start cutting the video between sentences to accelerate the debit speed. I just can,t listen to a video when there is no breath between sentences, it drive me crasy after 2 minutes!! Your rhythm is good and your English is clear, stay like this please. I'm also interest at the procedure to install a mechanical injection pump instead of electronic one if you have time one of this day. My truck is an 1994 2500 HD Silverado. Tank again!!

i’ve got a 97 3500 and i don’t know anything about diesels so don’t roast me but if i want to change injectors or the turbo or something like that is it the same thing like a car when i have to get it tuned? and if so what type of remote tuner would you recommend
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 жыл бұрын
You're good man, I don't see the point in downing anybody that's asking an honest question so you're good. The answer to your question is both yes and no at the same time. If you're just changing injectors say to like Marine injectors are good set of factory Bosch injectors then no you won't need any sort of tune or anything like that it's just adding more fuel. Changing turbos on the other hand can prove to be a different story. It really depends on the amount of boost you're throwing to it, if you go over that 10 psi mark and it starts throwing a code then you will have to get something in order to full the ECU into thinking it's reading the proper boost or get a tuned ECU. As far as recommendations for a tuner I personally like quadstar tuning. They seem to put a great products and I haven't had any issues out of anything that I've ordered from them. (I am not sponsored)

Hey , I am finally working on my 6.5 project. I have one goal only. Making this thing stupid reliable. I don’t want more boost. I don’t want more power. It has 112k miles on it and it was passed down to me. It’s a 94. My current plans are new harmonic balancer as the old ones rubber is about to give. I don’t want to remove the vacuum pump because I am going to use it for a brake booster. My current plans are: New oil and water pump Timing chain Head gasket and studs. Harmonic balancer Rebuild turbo New vacuum pump (chassis I am installing has a brake booster, or electric vacuum pump) Bigger radiator 180f thermostat Of course, going to reseal whole engine. Anything else I am missing??
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 ай бұрын
Good evening sir, I like your plan, I think its great. I read your list and the only thing I would recommend with everything you have mentioned and want to do, I would say instead of going back with a harmonic balancer I would pick up a fluid damper and a billet pull as well as doing a PMD relocation. The harmonic balancers are known for going out and breaking the crankshaft. I would also suggest and aftermarket lift pump, preferably one with remote fuel filters but i digress. The factor lift pumps will fail at some point and leave you stranded and a newer lift pump will insure proper liberation and fuel supply to the injection pump. Also, if your rig is a DS4 truck, I would greatly consider a PMD relocation.

Question number two, back on my gm8 turbo with waste gate controller because my wastegate actuator died on my big turbo. So the gm8 was pushing 16-18psi now barely pumping out 4-8psi right after I got it out the shop after having my injection pump pcm replaced all grounds redone. Where is my boost going? I replaced the v band clamp between turbo to down pipe and it got worse. At this point I have upgraded injectors new fuel pump new injection pump new pmd new ecm fan and radiator upgrade the exhaust needs replaced but I don’t think it’s leaking bad enough for me to lose that much boost, i went from 24/26 with the hx 40 when I bought it back to 16-18 with the gm8 and now the gm8 is not managing to make 0-8psi

Warm or cold, it always seems to turn over a few times before firing off. When it's cold, it seems like as soon as the oil pressure jumps up, it fires off. I'll drive it for a while, go to restart it, and it still cranks over several revolutions before firing off. Runs great otherwise. Any thoughts 6.5 folks?

This maybe a silly question, but could a person take a alternative route an supercharge their 6.5? Also would their be any pros/cons to this, or is this just a bad idea in general?
@JessePelkey1
@JessePelkey1 2 ай бұрын
I don't think its a bad question at all man. Truth be told to my understanding there has very little as far as testing if at all with a super charger on a 6.5L There are a few pros and cons to either one, but with realistically no one making the effort to make a kit or test a super charger on these engines its hard to tell how it actually responds.

@@JessePelkey1 yeah I've always been curious especially since with this particular engine it might actually make sense. However I'm definitely gonna be asking questions due to I'm in a debate between a 5.9 cummins 3rd gen, or a 6.5. I'm mainly looking on cost, easy diy, and I'll only be towing 8-9k 5k at an absolute max.

6.5L never came factory with an EGT probe so someone installed an aftermarket one at some point. The most common place to install one is on the passenger side exhaust manifold just before the turbo. That'd be where i would start looking
