@@HarpersShed As you are starting up again my advice is not to put yourself under pressure to post, that's when it becomes a job and it will then start to interfere with family life, which I believe was a factor from the past. So please don't go down that route again. Just post for fun, there are a lot of us who enjoy your channel and would love to see you and your endeavours, mine is seeing someone who's passionate about their interest. Way too often great channels become big, which is fine but they lose that spark and become all about making money, don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong in that but sadly go away from the reason for starting the channel. There are some that don't change and I commend them for that, me personally when a channel starts to flaunt about their lifestyles is when I stop following them. So young man do your channel at your speed and enjoy it. Gary 🇬🇧🇬🇧

Ive considered doing this to my GU. Keen to follow along and see how it all goes.
@HarpersShed2 ай бұрын
My advice would buy a new engine and use a complete new kit. It would seem like more money upfront but saves so much hassle in the end. I have spend way more time trying to make mismatched 2nd hand parts work that it's just not worth the cost savings.

Hi Tim and welcome back! I have a 'theory'. I propose that your channel satisfaction is directly derived from your beard. Think about it, you shaved it off and made a post about retiring from YT, then, a video appears and your beard is back!!! Coincidence? I don't think so! Ha ha!! Good to see you back online. I enjoy your content. FYI, I have a 94 Patrol ute with a Chev 6.5 turbo diesel shoehorned under the bonnet. So I will enjoy this series very much. Cheers, Pete!
@HarpersShed2 ай бұрын
I must say I'm very intrigued by your theory mate, you could indeed be on to something. I do remember seeing your patrol with 6.5 when you did your project tour videos. How did you find it compared to the td42? Did you change your diff ratios at all?
@pete-mate35242 ай бұрын
@@HarpersShed Hi Tim, the Chev has huge amounts of torque by comparison, but not a lot of speed. I also looked at changing the diff's to compensate for this, but ended up going to Marks 4wd Adaptors and got a high ratio 5th gear for the highway (can't remember the cost, but WAY cheaper than a set of diff's, and I still have the low ratio's available for 'off roading'). However!!! The lack of reliability and huge rego costs have convinced me to re-fit the original engine back into it (when the time comes). I can get better reliability and cheaper rego for the TD42. Also, those engines can be bombed up to produce the same amount of power as the Chev for similar, or less money....In my humble opinion. But you loose the cool sound of the V8 rumble. Good luck with it. I'm looking forward to seeing this series. Pete 🙂

It's really fascinating how these engines are still being used in swaps in Australia and Britain, yet almost universally hated here in the USA... While you guys have excellent, reliable Diesels from Nissan, Toyota, Isuzu, ect...... It is rare to see a Chevy truck still running one of these here in the states! It's not that these are horrible, they really are not that bad, but they aren't that good, either, just kind of a mediocre engine. One cool feature I like is that they have a wider rev range than most Diesels, and they do have tuning potential. I think part of the problem with these engines here in the states is the perceived connection to the absolutely horrible Oldsmobile V8 Diesel, (you are too young and in the wrong country to realise just how bad they were !!!) I remember when the Chevy 6.2 came out in 1982, and people were a bit wary. Those were slow, but got incredible economy, and were a bit fragile, but saw improvements thru the 80's and 90's and the 6.5 version. I'm an inline six fan (Cummins, Nissan,Toyota, Isuzu) but I think these Chevy Diesels are kinda cool and deserve a little love.
@HarpersShed2 ай бұрын
I think a big reason why they are used over here is to do with cost. If you have a patrol or Toyota that is petrol and you want to convert it to diesel the factory engines are crazy expensive to get. A TD42 for example is almost $10k for a standard long block from Nissan and that's without injector pump. Even 2nd hand you're still paying close to that. Even with the cost of the rebuild parts my 6.5 engine has cost me less than $5k. Granted the conversion has probably cost another $2-3k for bits but that still brings me under what just a long block TD42 would be to buy. As for engines like a 6bt or a duramax they are stupid expensive and you normally have to import them from the states. I saw a duramax up for sale recently for $20k, that was engine, box and wiring harness but still that's a used engine not a rebuilt unit. I guess time will tell if the 6.5 turns out to be a good engine for my needs.
@timmcooper2942 ай бұрын
@@HarpersShed I figured cost was a factor, as I know the military dumps a lot of these overseas at bargain prices. Yea, my favourite, the old Cjummins12 valve 6BT5.9 is getting crazy expensive, as a lot of newer engines get swapped out for the simple, reliable power, and that straight six sound. A friend of mine did a Duramax swap in his 1961 Chev Apache, and even with the great deal he got on a wrecked truck for the engine, it was a costly swap to sort the electronics and ancillaries. I feel lucky I got my Cummins 12 valve when I did before things went crazy. That being said, I'd run a 6.2 or 6.5 Chev naturally aspirated Diesel in an old Chev truck for utility usage because they really did get great economy, and I remember back in the 1980's they were reliable if not abused.
