In this Animatic, The Count reminisces of the 'man' he used to be, the happy life he led, and the pain he endured.
(The ending is left a bit ambiguous, in the musical he gets back together with Mercedes, but in the book he chooses a different woman, sooooo we thought we could leave that up to you. This animatic was more about Dantes anyway, his story and his journey, about everything that lead to this moment. It was never supposed to focus on which girl he ended up with.)

We were both completing a 2 year Game Development course (which we both graduated!) and were thus busy working on class assignments.
Where’s the music from? And where can I get it?
It is from a musical, called “The Count of Monte Cristo Musical”. The music is available on iTunes.

You can’t, unless you live nearby where it is being performed on stage, as there are no recordings of it.

Everything was drawn in Photoshop CS6, and edited in After Effects CS6. (the keyframes for the animation of the wings opening and the flying at the end was done in Flash CS6, then drawn again in Photoshop)
When will you turn these animatics into animations?
Nope. This is the finished product. It would take waaay too long to try and animate these.

And with that, something truly magical comes to an end. A series that I loved and adored more than almost anything else over the last 5 years. A series that spawned so much adoration and devotion, and which inspired so many people to expand on it, basically creating its own contained parallel MLP-universe that, I would argue, is actually much more interesting than the show itself. With this animatic, you created something really beautiful. I'm happy that you returned to the more sketchy look that made your older animatics feel so very charming and unique. Of course, the polish that 5/6 had was really cool, but I feel this has even more of that original flair that made me fall in love with your animatics ^^ But the thing that blows me away the most in this is the artistic direction you took with the song. Monte Cristo lamenting over a dull grey hill, then reminiscing over his youth, filled with warm golden colors, and then finally letting go of his past and looking into a bright, free future, accompanied with a beautiful starry sky. It's like how I always envisioned this song, you totally nailed the atmosphere it was going to convey, which just shows how excellent of an animatic this really is. Thank you for concluding this series in such a powerful way. And no matter what the future brings for this channel, I will always be there support you two! Let your future be as bright as it is for Edmond in this video =)

I love the alternate ending as much as anyone else, but I prefer this as the canon ending. It's so satisfying to see that after years of hatred and betrayal, Dashie is able to move on and live his life without the burden of vengeance on his heart. Either way, both endings are a great way to say goodbye to such a moving story.

16. I was 16 when I first watched the first part of this series. The songs were stuck in my head and I watched these videos countless times to learn the words as well as admire the art you created. I was mesmerized! 21. I’m now 21 and crying over this video as a series I’ve held so close to my heart comes to a close. I don’t really watch MLP anymore or consider myself a part of the fandom, but damn this makes me reminisce about the past and the woman I used to be. I was once naive and clueless to how the world is like. I just wanted to draw MLP oc’s and watch my cartoons. Don’t get me wrong, I still absolutely love cartoons! But this video has completed a part of me I didn’t realize was missing. I literally gasped while I was working super loudly when I saw the notification! It was like I was 16 all over again fangirling over ponies! In conclusion, I cried over this beautiful ending! There’s absolutely no words to describe the emotions I feel towards this animatic and those series in general. It all started just with one post on a small site with “Hell to your Doorstep” attached to it, and so it began. The curiosity, the interest, the appreciation and the inspiration. Those animatics and this story left an everlasting impact on my life and helped me in becoming who I am today: an artist, who creates videos with her friends and reads plenty of books like Dracula, The Count of Monte Cristo and etc. Your animatics are incredible, Ink Potts. The amount of professional work and symbolism you put in your videos is outstanding and even your sketches sometimes are rough, the emotions and the camera angles in your videos are beyond grand. This is the first time we actually see Edmond as a sailor in your animatics and, despite all the fan art of him we’ve seen, this is still one of the greatest reveals I’ve ever seen in an animatic. It is very clear that you put both parts of your souls and hearts in your videos, and even if your characters in your videos don’t move like in an animation they still feel very much alive. I became very emotionally attached to all five of the characters in those series, even if some of them didn’t appear as much. Every single emotion throughout those series felt alive and made us feel exactly what we were supposed to feel throughout the series; curiosity, love, despair, fear, sadness and joy. It breaks my heart to know that we will no longer see our beloved Count anymore, but he still lives in our hearts (and we always can re-watch your animatics, even though the feelings wouldn’t be the same as they were the first time I watched those series). Your animatics are life changing and are an incredible pieces of art this fandom needs more of, even if it’s slowly falling apart due to the end of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I honestly did not expect the series to end so soon, those five years went too quickly and there was a part of me that never wanted “The Man I used to be” to come out, but it did and I honestly cried at my first watch and I am still re-watching this animatic. And the more I watch the more my heart breaks, even though I feel incredibly happy for Edmond for finally getting free from his past. I’m glad that you made the ending open for interpretation, since now everyone can imagine their own ending and stick with the one they like the best. (I still prefer the book’s ending.) Ink Potts, whatever it is you are planning to do next, we, your fans, will always be by your side and will support you no matter how much time we must wait for your next masterpiece. Here’s something I have noticed! Each scene from the second video “I will be there” to the final “The man I used to be” are like the five stages of grief for Dante and Mercedes. Let me clarify, I will be there: Denial, refusing to believe that he will be trapped forever. Another day another death: Bargaining, Mercedes prays everyday believing he will come back to her, while Dante keeps questioning why he deserved this or if he deserved it at all. Hell to your doorstep: Anger, Dante has finally had enough and lost sight of who he once was. This man is dead: Depression, no matter how many times Mercedes tells him that she loves him for who he was before, Dante now as Count tortures himself by refusing to let go of his pain and anger. The man I used to be: Acceptance, He finally lets go of all the hate that drove him and lets himself become Dante again filled with the love he once had for Mercedes.

the coolest part of this is that thanks to the "rainbow roadtrip special" we KNOW that the lack of color means hopeless magic. so it makes sense that the color returns along with rainbow's happiness and hope. 100/10 fantastic.

Ahhhh! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!!!!!!!! I will admit, this did make me tear up a little bit. Its nice seeing him so happy after all that he's been through. Kind've disappointed we didn't get to see Dante end up with Mercedes, but I get your reasoning for leaving it ambiguous (though I think you could have gotten away with having him be with Mercedes, since this series never introduced any other mare; but oh well, you made your choice, and I doubt you'll want to go back over it now ;)). She and her son leave with the hope that he will become a good man. Dantès finds love again with his servant Haydee who had been an important part in his revenge against Fernand.

I think there's a benefit to this taking as long as it did to complete. Through this Count of Monte Cristo series, we can see your progress as artists. Both in terms of the art itself and being more ambitious with things like editing and camera work. Not to mention full fledged animation. Alright I hate commenting twice but I gotta say this. I prefer the musical to the actual book. Either because of my revenge loving self or because it seems more triumphant but SPOILERS:: In the book Dantes is left confused at the end. He's not victorious he's become the villain and god can judge him and punish him for taking revenge into his own hands. But in the musical here, it sounds... More... Triumphant and confused. Like he openly acknowledges that he's not who he used to be. But he can finally move on having won against his enemies. I just prefer that as the ending. Being able to win against those who did everything to kill and put you down taking everything from you. It's more fulfilling than letting an invisible possibly non-existent entity take control over your life there and now. Idk just how I view things.

I dont remember when it came out but the movie I watched ended similarly with Dantes finally relinquishing the control the hatred and thirst for revenge that had once consumed him, showing Mercedes and Alfred the place where he was captured and list all hope. Showing them that he his plans changed and would demolish the place, letting go of the past and move on with them in the future.

Tenvian Rabbit I personally think it is more triumphant to find happiness and resolution by yourself, regardless of other people. Like, i find it more impressive if he forgave the people who ruined his life and moved on by himself, instead of needing to see his enemies ruined before he could be happy, which is part of the reason why I respect Jesus. Also, if God didn’t exist, morality is practically irrelevant because all men are equal, so pretty much anyone can justify anything they do. Although, the people’s idea of God at the time was pretty rigid at the time... idk. Anyways, these are my thoughts. Thanks for reading this long reply?

I just dont see a need for it to justify your morals like it's some kind of crutch to be good when theres all kind of horrendous things done throughout history supposedly done in the name of religion.

You are kind of missing the point. He is SUPPOSED to be left confused. It is SUPPOSED to feel empty. One of the main points of the main plot is that the revenge, while it can bring you satisfaction, is ultimately a very weak reason to live for and in the long run it will change you and damage you and burn the bridges behind you. It is not supposed to be this triumphant "I am coming back in my full glory" experience, so in this case, this kind of bastardizes the book. This is also one of the reasons why I am vehemently opposed to Dantes becoming an item with Mercedes at the end. It's as if nothing has happened and we just get over the fact that the guy spent 14 years in prison on false charges, then spent another several years plotting to destroy the three, then led them to suicide. This isn't a dispute over a stolen beer from the fridge, you can't just wave your hand at it and go "well, now that that's done, Mercie, my dear - last I remember, we were about to get married, right? Boy, time sure flies". I do enjoy the music, but IMO the ending should be much more somber and contemplative: "Have I earned anything by this? Have I made progress, or am I back to square one? What shall I do from now on, now that my only driving force is gone, what should I live for?", not this "YES, I GOT RID OF THESE ASSHOLES, I GOT MY GIRL BACK, BOY LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL AGAIN!"

Peeps, this came out 4 years ago?! And I didn’t know a part 6 finally came out! My childhood animatic? OMFG what a fantastic surprise on such an amazing day for me! The art has improved so much! Dash looks amazing and I forgot how much I loved this design of her. Fantastic job with the animatic and that animation tho! Man, as the song built up, her colors came back, and her wings came out, I started tearing up! It made me so happy and emotional. Rainbow Dash flying around in that animation was so great and made me so happy! Congratulations Ink Potts! You made an amazing animatic series and I will cherish it for the rest of my life! Editing side note: I noticed that at 2:58 where Rainbow is flying, you can notice times where her hair changes or moves into the same style it was before. Or as far as MLP, the mane style RD already has. I don’t know if that was intentional but I just had noticed it and for me it made the scene better.
