I don't even own a diesel truck but I love watching your videos, such a wealth of information. The situation you described where a dealership or shop will replace an engine but not find the cause of the failure or check the dpf, can be said for just about any shop on any vehicle. They fix the problem but do not fix the cause of the problem. Great information as always Bill.

I sure want a new truck, but my 2000 7.3 is still running so strong that I don't have the heart to retire it. I've used all Bills longevity tips from the simple radiator cap change too prolong in the high pressure injector pump. Thanks Bill. Did have to replace one major item. The seats. Wore them out so I put in a set of leather ones from a wrecked Lariat. I'm happy again lol. Long live the PowerStroke!

I just picked up a 2016 F-350 6.7 at the urging of my wife. She was getting tired of our aging but well loved 97 7.3. I was hesitant at first but I've gotten used to the new-to-us truck. Now I've got to sell my old buddy (which I spent a fortune on over the 20 years we had it). Banks intercooler, Banks torque converter, Banks trans-command, D-Celerator exhaust brake, Edge programmer, pillar gauges, and much more. The new truck comes with all this stuff from the factory! Sigh . . . But I don't need two trucks, so one has to go.

Working in the class 8 world, for Kenworth, I have seen several dpf, scr, and engine related failures that caused damage to the pre-mentioned items. The factory was/is very diligent about completing the repair all the way down stream. So you can easily swing a $40k engine and put $14k in a dpf and doc set up. Gotta love the EPA!

Good video. Thx for the Help. I have a 2012 Ford f350 that went into def engine idle only mode. I'm also a semi truck driver. And deal with def regen all the time. So I replaced my MAF sensor because of engine light on. Then I basically manually egen'd my Ford by keeping the rpm's between 1500 and 2000. Ideally at 17-1800. I set a timer and it took 6 and half minutes and the def light turned off and my truck was able to drive away. If you dont believe me at 38 years old. Ask my mom that I drove off from. 👍 It's dumb we dont have manual regens available like we do on the semi trucks. Hope this helps. It worked for me. Also I don't have a computer. But it's been running ever since. I've sat on the side of the road in older Mack pinnacles while it has a button to manual regen. I did this process in my 2012 Ford f350 and have been running ever since.

Here in France we have diesel wich take fuel fill up at the pump to program regenerations. So,if peoples go often at the gas station to fill up for few bucks only each time,the regen kick in very often. Or an other known problem is a battery ,with a voltage dropping just enough to resetting the ecu memory ,but not enough to create starting problems,wich do not allow regen to being done,so create other problems.

Just bought a F-350 Lariat 2011. Whoever owned this truck before kept it in excellent condition and really took care of the truck maintenance since 2011. But 2 days after we bought it from Ford dealership, that "Drive to clean exhaust" message came on (We bought this truck because my wife and I are planning to get a 5th wheel but in the meantime we won't be driving far distances for probably the next 3 months) so I drove the truck non stop for about 20 miles and the drive to clean message disappeared from the Information option. It did not show that it was completed, but it hasn't come back on again. Maybe 'cause it got to a percentage where the computer says it's ok. I've read that some people had to drive for more than 45 minutes and still it wouldn't regen. I guess it just builds up if you just drive it short distances all the time. The truck runs super smooth and it's got great pick up when I need to speed up. I'm very pleased with it so far.

i feel a DPF should have a service/manual regen every 20k, i find the controlled environment gives a nice clean burn and helps push ash out the tail pipe, and after the cooldown process i findgoing out and flooring it 2-3 times to increase the air flow helps push the ash out

people don't understand that it takes quite a bit to actually get these engines to temp. Not "water temp" but to get the oil full temp for long enough to vapor off the blow by / diesel that gets in the crank case / oil. Idling won't help, but people do it

Great information. The only thing I would disagree with you on is your statement about lesser fuel mileage on the 6.7 power stroke. If I’m just driving it on the highway with no load I can get 18 and 19 miles to the gallon with it. That was the same story on the 2004 we had with the 6.0 L. They ran very similar on fuel mileage under the same driving conditions. Our 2004 was a three-quarter ton and now we have a 2017 1 ton. Of course all of this depends on a person‘s driving style. Using quality DEF helps keep the system clean also. I see nothing but problems with pouring straight water into it.

So I have a quick question about this process. I own a 7.3 but am always trying to expand my knowledge. If these systems are put on the newer trucks to keep the "pollution" from going into the environment. Wouldn't a regen burning it out put worse stuff into the environment during that process than just not having the system in the first place? Would a stock truck during the regen process pass emissions?

No, long story short. The DPF/DEF system uses urea as a catalyst to clean the exhaust soot and gases prior to ejection from the final exhaust exit. The exhaust is literally emitting cleaner air than the engine initially ingested. To answer the 2nd question, yes the vehicle would pass an E test during regen.

Damien: there are 4 main parts to an aftertreatment system. Doc dpf mixer and scr/amox. The doc is a flow through device that captures and burns unburned hydrocarbons. It also converts some Nox to the fast reaction no2. Also, carbon monoxide is reduced in the doc. The dpf captures ash and carbon particles. Regen gets enough oxygen and heat to burn that carbon down to a smaller ash and thus clean the system. The mixer / decomp tube is where the def is injected. The scr then does the final clean up where nh3 ammonia breaks down the Nox into nitrogen gas and water. The final part, amox helps protect the system from sending ammonia out into the environment

Great video guys. But one thing is Running a Regen does not clean DPF. Running a regen turns soot to ash. Every regen completed fills the DPF substrate channels with ASH. Ash will create back PSI causing issues up stream. The filter will need to be removed for service at some point if you want a truly cleaned filter.

I work for UPS. Any time i drive one of their diesel trucks it always goes into regen. I'm assuming because of all the stop and go the dpf is always getting filled up. Its a freightliner but i think they use a detuned cummins engine. I think its detuned becuase they aren't that fast but i had one that had power loss and it tripped the engine light on, once that light came on i had full power and the turbo spooled up like i never heard it before and the damn thing took off, faster than normal and ran great. Eventually it went back into normal mode.

I think the next time I see it when I'm not towing, I will drop it into 4th gear or so in order to get the RPMs up to around 2000 and give it 10 minutes or so. I hate to think that I'm running extra re-gen cycles because I'm not letting it complete.

This is what heavy diesel trucks do. That technology is finally coming down to residential use. Their were a couple of frieghtliners I did regens on where the driver just ignores the regen light and causes a mess of problems. All because of a simple fix and neglecting routine maintenance.

Here come the comments from everyone that's never stepped foot in a 6.7 about deleting it. They're pretty reliable emissions Diesel engines for the most part. I have had two 6.7's and I've never had any issues with either one. Yes, I agree the emissions stuff kills the performance. No shit. I know deleting it benefits the engine. Got that. Do I need more than 410horse/825lb ft of torque in my pickup? Nope. Got a semi for that. I've let both my 6.7's bone stock and if/when I get another, that one will be stock. I get more money in a trade for a stock lariat than a deleted and tuned truck that a dealer more than likely won't touch. This is my opinion. To each their own. I'd be willing to bet that cummins/duramac/powerstroke emissions problems are about the same in the number of occurrences(late model engines.). Do your maintenance and your truck will last no matter what brand.

You should let Mike do some more videos. I do a TON of manual regens where I am. I know if I scroll through the comments it is going to be delete, delete, delete. I do not have that option. The trucks I deal with have to be emissions compliant.

To reply to myself. You should do a vid about the potential consequences of deletes. I work on diesels from 7.3 to the most modern Benz and BMW. You are not going to delete a Benz or BMW. If you do a DPF delete be sure to sell your old one on Craigslist.

It seams to me that Ford would have made a Manual Regen Button that the owner could activate himself. If I know I'm going to drive to the city, which is 70 miles, it would be a great time to do a manual regen. 70 miles of of 70mph freeway driving is long enough to do a regen isn't it??

Never knew you could do a forced regen on the 6.7 great video. A question for you guy?? Why don't the have a button in them that you can do a parked regen like over the road trucks have? I know that would take business from you guys but just wondering why they don't do that??

The DPF was added by the US Congress in 1997 because the big oil companies saw people making their own diesel fuel and using it. So to prevent that they got congress to pass the requirement by law for all diesels to have a DPF and it's corresponding sensors. The DPF is made to clog.. that's its real purpose.. don't believe me go ask a diesel mechanic who works on big diesels like buses and rigs they will tell you its a crock. Funny how these vehicles run perfectly fine on biodiesel when the stuff is removed as well as tens of thousands of farmers are running the trucks and stuff on biodiesel they made w/o any problems if they don't have a DPF on them. If biodiesel was bad to use in diesels, why would the law have an exemption for farm use vehicles?
@Brandon_Nelson92
@Brandon_Nelson92 6 жыл бұрын
Some of your info is off, but you bring up a good point. The EPA is trying to get people away from diesel pickup trucks. DPFs were not required until late 2007. Ford simply went to the 2008 model year early with the DPF equipped 6.4. I have a 1999 7.3 with no emissions stuff from the factory. I would run b20 biodiesel, but would never run waste vegetable oil (WVO), waste motor oil or any home brew fuel. Even if done right, those fuels are hard on injectors to the point where injector rebuilders wont warranty them if you run WVO.

They should have just put a switch or button on the truck somewhere to run a DPF clean-out! That would have eliminated a HUGE number of problems with them. But I know-gotta have cash flow PER QUARTER.

Yeah, nobody is going to deal with this shit. I bought a V10 and at 110,000 miles have not had to replace a single engine part, had a single issue of any kind. I pull a 13K lb. RV at 70 mph all day, just like my 7.3L would do... I see no benefit of even having a diesel pickup today.

Hi Bill, what are your thoughts on bypass oil filters for the 6.7? Also, is it true that oil life and engine life can be drastically increased by adding one? I’m buying a newer rig and I’d like to know what I should make a purchase priority for longevity, these trucks are expensive as shit.

Many states will not allow deleted exhausts. Can't pass inspection. Also it's a big fine if you get caught And if it's a new truck, you void warranty. Bottom line is, if know how to handle your diesel truck you won't have any problems.
