The 6.8 Western is a great round but that model 70 is a lot better looking with some nice wood on it. Both will get the job done. Good comparison. 👍🙏

The 6.8 Western with the 162 grain bullet has a much higher sectional density than the 30-06 with a 150. The 30-06 would need to shoot a 203 grain bullet to have the same sectional density.

That's impressive. Especially since the 30-06 Springfield round that hit the mild steel was clocked in at over 3000 feet per second. I know that with a 26 inch barrel you can get over 3000 feet per second from Winchester 6.8 Western factory ammo but these 6.8 Western rounds stayed under 3000 feet per second. I think there will be more brass and factory loads available for 6.8 Western if and when the 277 Fury becomes available (in a 70K psi version), and possibly becomes a popular caliber.

I am def going to re-test with lead bullets... be interesting to see the speeds out of those! no doubt hoping the 6.8 Western doesnt die off!!

I'm not going to be able to believe it! The 30.06 has the same bullet weight as the 6.8 Western round and you can believe the same bullet from the 30.06 will be equal in penetration of the sand.
@cr42hunting993 ай бұрын
@@garyfrancis-ns3kq the sd of the 6.8 is higher/better. Hence the better penetration on sand
@garyfrancis-ns3kq3 ай бұрын
@@cr42hunting99 I believe that the SD of a 162 gr 30.06 will compare to the bullet you have here. 150 gr 30.06 is for thin skin game animals and the 162 gr 30.06 is for more penetration than the 150 gr 30.06! I'm still not believing in the comparison of a 150 gr bullet against a 162 gr bullet is a fair comparison!!!

How many grain bullets were you using? Speed is supposed to defeat armor/steel but a heavy bullet will penetrate deeper into soft targets. The 6.8 western is basically a 270wsm with higher BC bullets (=more modern/updated), which makes it pretty great, even for long range. Sand is pretty tough to get through for a lead bullet. I'm curious how AP for 30-06 or a solid copper bullet would do for either one.
@cr42hunting997 ай бұрын
I actually have some AP 30-06 for that very reason and going to run a test soon! You’re right about the 6.8… I was using 162 6.8 Western and 150gr 30-06… thx for dropping in!

Bullet sectional density plays a huge role here.... Using a 180 gr bullet, 30-06 will penetrate deeper.
@cr42hunting997 ай бұрын
Definitely going to revisit with some 180!
@poorfatman53177 ай бұрын
Well, you set the 30 odds 6 up for failure. A lite bullet and a bigger caliber. You know, the sectional density would be far less. But on the mild steel, I believe the 30 odd 6 went through.I would call it a tie.Look at the block and the 6.8.Western didn't go through the mild still

Definitely going to run this back… and I have some 30-06 AP to try!

The 3006 with a larger diameter bullet, traveling faster will dump energy much quicker than the 6.8. Thats why it didnt make it through the sand. On steel though, velocity is king so im surprised it didn't go through.

If you're not using same weight bullets, the comparison is pointless.
@cr42hunting996 ай бұрын
and if you use the same weight bullet it comes down to case capacity... 🤓
@brandonelder6623 ай бұрын
Actually , if you want to compare the two, you’d want two bullets of same design but similar sectional densities. For instance, a .270 Win 150 grain will out penetrate a 30-06 150 grain all day long (provided bullets are of equal design). Also, bullets with higher BC will carry their energy further down range with more efficiency. A good comparison would be like a 150 gr .270 vs 180 gr. 30-06 …or …. 130 gr .270 vs 150 gr 30-06.
