Thank you Ash. I truly appreciate your advice here. As a child I loved walking by the local river and through the fields. As an adult I have spent many a holiday walking through the bridal paths and treks around Britain, Ireland and further afield. I only ever spent one holiday by the beach and found it somewhat boring. The challenge of walking through moorland and woodland I always found invigorating. As for the beetroot, I absolutely concur. I have it with salad for lunch at least three days a week. I read academic books and papers to keep abreast of my former job as I am retired, but always keep a copy of my favourite poetry nearby.

As a corollary to keeping a journal, carrying a small notebook and pen when out of the house enables you to write down the things that come to all of us out of the blue or are prompted by what we see and hear in our surroundings that otherwise will be forgotten.

What a fabulous show! I practice many of the things you mentioned. I grow and eat beets throughout the year on my little homestead here in Virginia. I walk between 4-6 miles with my 2 dogs everyday day. I read daily, especially the Bible and Christian books. I am currently reading "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." I love Sherlock Homles! As a passion, I love raising vegetables and roses. I play the bagpipes and the violin. Of particular importance to me is my Traditional Catholic faith and I love attending the ancient Latin Mass. I need to start keeping a journal. I enjoy hosting breakfast meals here at my home for my closest friends. I am the ancestor to a number of Confederate Veterans and so love reading about the Civil War and visiting battlefields. Thank you for such a fantastic series of talks. And I love dressing in the Edwardian style. I love Harris Tweed jackets! God bless you!

Nice video. I try to live a simple life. Walk, read, listen to the wireless (yes i still call it the wireless) I gave up driving some years ago and feel so much better for it. I am old enough to remember when a Sunday treat was was going for a drive. When i stopped driving it had become something i dreaded. Sitting in traffic jams everywhere i went. Cars driving inches behind you if you dared to drive slower than the breakneck speeds they felt you should be moving at. Walking people say good morning, you see so much more, hear so much more and enjoy so much more. I read everyday. I particularly enjoy biographies but enjoy fiction too. I am currently re-reading Flemings James Bond books, so different to the films for anybody who has not read them. Sorry but do not like beetroot. I do eat pretty healthily porridge with blueberries, raspberries, seeds and honey for breakfast. Fruit all day. Drink plenty of water and usually pasta meal for dinner and an apple for dessert. In bed by 10pm latest up in summer at least, early 6-7am. Financial restraints restrict my purchasing power but help me appreciate what i do have. Keep up the interesting videos.

My beetroot tips: do not sow before the end of May or when the beech hedges are in full leaf, make sure you keep them watered in dry weather, beets like more nitrogen than most folk give them so give them lawn type fertilizer, earth up beets to the bottom of the shaws for smooth skins and harvest before they get to the size of a cricket ball. Use a pressure cooker to boil them , saves a lot of energy. I spend 6 hours a day gardening , lifting , bending , stretching and walking. In the winter ,if dry, dig two rows of the veg plot before lunch and before spring sowing time you will find that all the digging is done without wrecking your back. Can you guess what MY passion is?

great tips. I think a lot of people have more passions than they realise. I never like to have tunnel vision over this kind of thing like some who are all-consumed by "Golf" or whatever... I enjoy lots of sports and activities like Snooker, Pool, Gym, Swimming, Running. I've recently gotten into motorcycling and that is a real passion at the moment. I enjoy creative writing too. Sometimes we realise our passions have been dormant for a long time - years perhaps - and we're not sure how to answer that question - but then realise we just need to re-ignite them. writing stuff down and time management is a great way to help fit our passions and hobbies into our lives.

Thank you for this nice little video Mr. Jones! Walking is pretty much the one remaining "sporty-esque" activity I can wedge easily into daily life - I start my day at 05:30 so I can walk to the train station which is fair bit away, I arrive early in the city I work so I can walk to the local inner city Aldi and do some minor shopping (as in: thing that need to be bought, obviously not pleasure browsing), I sometimes take walks to the Main river (fairly substantial river I work 400m away from; creates a great micro climate in the city) and walk some 45min up or down, it's lovely. And then i walk home from the train station again - might use a step counter to check just how much I walk every day, but it's not enough for me to loose weight but it also keeps me a tiny bit more in shape than most people expect from someone a bit on the chubby side of figure. Beetroots... my fiancée loves it, eats it all the time, in a salad, *as* a salad, in a casserole... I personally can't ear all that much of it because it would be not entirely uncritical for my Crohn's... meh😅. Read... yeah, I read substantially more a day than 10 pages, since I have the time while commuting and the ability to read fairly fast (things university drilled into me 😆) so I read... oof! - hard to quantify, but probably something between like ~50-100 pages a day while commuting or before sleeping - and that's the part about controlling any anxieties. As you might have guessed I'm reading mostly English language texts, unless they're originally in German. And Latin... but that's nothing but an occasional exercise to keep my Latin in a halfway intact state, nothing overly stylistically impressive, it's more the late republican politicians and generals because there is no clearer prose than Caesar's or his nephew Augustus', some Cicero... and just in case this happens to sound impressive: it's the *simplest possible authors* and I read *only a little* ... just enough to keep my reading skills in a remotely intact state, I can't really *speak* Latin, I take forever to construct my sentences... 😓 As for earlier to bed, well, I don't *need* much sleep, that's not a boast, it's a weird effect because ~2013 my Crohn's was... *disturbingly* acute, and I spent until late 2014 on an somewhat unhealthy high dosage of powerful pain medication and when I had the operation that finally got this right again I just... well... I just quite the medication one day to the next because I was in dire need of confirming the pain to be gone. Turns out this was effectively going cold turkey, well not "effectively" given how hard pain medication works it *was* going cold turkey. So I spent the next two months sleeping on five of seven days at most. And ever since I have less need for sleep... though I admit this sounds and probably still is *insanely unhealthy* 😅. Journaling - oh yes, been doing that for quite some time now. I'm not a particularly religious person and I don`'t consider myself overly empathic or selfless, but helping when the need arises and you notice wit or you know of it and are capable of doing something within your means without compromising your own situation for it, it's obligatory I feel. It's less empathy and more just common sense and embracing a level of "gentlemanly chivalry" (my my, that sounds a bit highfalutin and pretentious, I know) as normal and reacting to it as normative truly makes yourself feel way better and in a tiny little scale the world a better place. I feel it's most healthy when you have embraced it to the point of only realizing this could be categorized as such when you reflect on it. As a side note: I really like the colour combination worn today by Mr. Jones, it's also my normal "summer" combination and the tiny flecks or yellow or gold on the blue pocket square just look *so* nice - I'd have added a cravat, but that's just me and my pretentiousness. 🤣 So thanks for these hint/tips/insights and Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Great stuff, as always, Ash! The bottom line is that you need some form of exercise, if not every day, then at least four or five days a week. (Obviously, this may be limited by medical and other conditions.) Those with full-time jobs may find it difficult to spend an hour or two on a daily basis for long walks. For those with serious time constraints, I'd recommend finding a good 20 minute High-Intensity Workout. Relatively short bursts of high output can do wonders. I'd also recommend most folks do at least some form of resistance exercise. This doesn't have to be lifting massive weights. You can keep your body quite well toned with simple pushups, crunches, and deep knee bends. Exercise, I find, provides powerful psychological benefits, in addition to its obvious physical ones.

I’d add 3 comments. 1. Great vid. Yes. 2. Be careful of excessive CANNED beetroot. It’s very high in sugar and too much will put T2 diabetes on the radar and could lead to possible kidney stones later in life. 3. Ask yourself this question. “ with what wealth do I would o like to retire ?” Whatever the answer… let that assist in shaping your financial decisions.

I will retire without any pocessions. Nothing inherited and I am not rich so I chose to live now and I will have memories when/if I am old. Better than working 60hrs a week your whole life then retire rich with nothing done. Personal choice.

@@viclucyzia I remember watching financial semi-celebrity Dave Ramsey talk about saving back in high school. How about a vid covering suit storage. Dress suit, tux, shirts. Lots of knowledge to nosey here
@themoderndandy713 Жыл бұрын
Try to hang your suits and shirts in storage if you can. For easily stainable suits like white or seersucker, place plastic around it. At the end of the season, dry clean your suits before storing them - and make sure your shirts are thoroughly washed. You wouldn't want any stains to set in over an entire half-year. Shoes are best stored with shoe trees, and make sure no bugs have crawled into your shoes before putting them on again. Ideally polish your shoes immediately after taking them out of storage.
@Fush1234 Жыл бұрын
I do. We have wardrobes full of RL Purple label suits and Kiton sports coats etc. I import my protective suit covers that have a plastic window for easy garment identification. I import hangers that are extra wide on the shoulder for my suits. I have all my shirts individually covered in a plastic protective 1/3 cover, to prevent rubbing against other shirts. To prolong the life. But Im sure that not everyone knows the secrets to ongoing care. So I just thought that as people invest their hard earned $$ into a wardrobe, they would be taught how to look after garments well. It’s not so much the initial cost… its the cost per wear for me that matters.

Hi Ash and the assembled Chapage. Walk? I run daily (not today, stuff got in the way) Beetroot, I have tried to like it- but just NO! Reading, sometimes, reference books mainly. Writing it down, I have random notebooks going back years that record exercise and operations that I have been on. I do not habitually "journal". Bed time, regardless of the time I go to bed, I get up at 0600 and go for a run. I have tried to go up earlier but rarely achieve it. Passions! I have several. I am keen on Military History and have a wealth of books on the subject. I enjoy skills hobbies, I do leathercraft, Medal mounting, sewing. I remain an active Army reservist and I also involve myself in WW2 living history. As a career mechanic and engineer, I like to tinker. There are a few more. Time is a premium, and very much a balancing act. I read with interest the underlying responses. In response to your Hegel quote, can I add from the late, great Douglas Adams: "Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so." Also anecdotally, no great idea starts with a salad. In response to your bonus point. I find Trip Advisor a good place to leave feedback on places. I have given reviews and namechecked staff that have offered good service and received a response form management thanking me. Until next time. *salute

I wonder: Could one being a part of American Selective Services count as being a reservist? I might start describing myself as an "unwilling military reservist." As much as I respect armed service members and veterans, I plan on throwing a special "Goodbye, draft" party at age 26. I would like to see Selective Services updated to explicitly exclude people with autism like myself, or other assorted disabilities.
