You’re right Sharky. African Americans (the ethnicity) must’ve had ancestors who went through the Transatlantic slave trade. African Americans (the race) are African ppl born in America. The race can include the ethnicity but here they got it wrong. It can be very confusing.

I am Ethiopian born in America. and never referred to myself as African American and only as African because I thought African American mean't people of African descent who had gone through slavery and have deep roots in Africa. People use the term African American in different ways which makes it very confusing, even for me. I thought he was a black-americas and was confused when he said he was African American cuz he was born in America but is Nigerian.

You are so right Sharky! I didn't even think about it when I watched this episode. Technically he is "African American", but it's kind of a cheat because he's only first generation. He's not African American in the way you described. If I were to be the mole for example, I would have to pick a country based on what I look like, not based on where BOTH of my parents were born. There should be two different terms for it.

The term was just created by some Blacks in America as a means to dissociate themselves from being called Africans.. Its is a actually a sad thing to se, and it very common, when Africans living in America are discriminated by so called "black Americans" when we all knw we all from the same race

An African born in the US is for example a Nigerian American or Zambian American, not African American.

There’s a huge lack of knowing the difference between ethnicity and race here. As a race, black Americans are African and not African American. Most true black people don’t even claim being called African American because the “african” part does not apply to our ethnicity. The culture of Africans is not the same as black americans. To be african American means you are from Africa and now are a citizen here, but you still have your african culture and stuff. To be a black american means your ancestors went through American slavery and has completely lost your African ethnicity- therefore we claim to be American and not african. I hope that makes sense y’all! So yea, blessing is actually african American and NOT black American. People forget that black America is actually a thing. This is why it’s confusing when foreigners from outside of the United States refer to themselves as black. 😂 calling a person white or black literally originated in America.
